Windows install prob?

Hello, my buddy’s computer is having some serious problems :( . Windows was constantly crashing (doesn’t help when you have cable, download all the time, and have NO antivirus/firewall of any kind) so I took it to my house, reformatted it, then tried to install his OS back on. No such luck, every time I try to install the OS I get different problems. Everything from all the files can’t be found on the CD, all the files can’t be copied, too the damn install actually starts and makes it all the way to 3 minutes left and freezes??? I tried different CD ROMs, different IDE cables, even a different HD but no luck. My only other guess is that maybe the IDE channels on the board died? :confused:

If anyone has any suggestions they are going to be very much appreciated, I need to get his comp back to him as soon as I can.

Check all settings in the BIOS. Make sure they are not too aggressive. If need be, set to failsafe and try the system. Get Memtest86+ and run that to make sure there is nothing wrong with the RAM. Doublecheck to make sure the heatsink/fan is clean and working properly. You may need to reseat the heatsink with new thermal paste after cleaning the old thermal paste/pad off completely.
 
I would definately ask him if he changed anything hardware wise. if he didn't, try swapping out sticks of ram. I was working on my dads comp about 1.5 years ago. its an old pII with 192 megs of ram. I was gonna put mroe ram in it and install xp pro, but when I got to the xp pro part, everything went to shit. I was having the same symptoms you are. turns out the board only supported 192 megs and the extra 256 I had in there was screwing things up. so I pulled out the old ram and the thing worked like a charm.

Could be cpu temps, but if the fan is spinning I doubt it.

the only other thing i could suggest is try installing on a spare HD, the one he is using could have bad sectors. that happened to me on my old laptop, and I didnt notice it until I was formatting from FAT 32 to NTFS, damn thing kept freezing on install.
 
Anytime I start up a system, I don't even try to install the OS until it's run and passed the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tests, and passed an overnight run of Memtest86+ with no errors.

It's saved me lots of time and it's SOP now around "B.B.S. Laboratories" I'd start there.

I second the motion that it is the RAM's fault. I had the exact same problems.
