Imoved back to A3s as well, easier to work on a rig inbetween units and points are the same. There's no point to waste your time on bigadv anymore. Not to bring up the old fight but Stanford better up the point value on these damn things. At 3.7 days per WU and atleast an hour of shot internet time, if there is no point advantage to do these than people wont do them, theres only downsides to running them, no advantages, and that only hurts stanford/the science.

With A2 units the work load and stability needed were high, and you had dead times on your internet, but stanford rewarded well for them and people went out of their way to make bigadv dedicated boxes. Now stanford nix's that advantage and worsens the other criteria and i bet you wont see many more dedicated boxen.

Again, not trying to bring up the age old fight but if someone as dumb as me can see this, why wouldnt stanford stick to proven strategies that worked? This is only gonna hurt the science
 
My house has horrible power delivery ill get a mild power surge, blip that resets the computer without turning it off. it looks to be working only to be waiting at the password screen. have lost a few bigadv from this. where with a normal A3 i could just restart it.

Have the computer autologon and then place the shortcut for the SMP client in the startup folder with all the flags you use. That should at least take care of the spontaneous reboots.

You should also get a good basic UPS system. That will eliminate the problem and protect your hardware. I'm sure the micro surges are not good for your PSU.
 
What Kendrak said. Those little blips are terrible for your systems. Here's a 1000VA 600 Watt Cyberpower UPS for $115 shipped. It even has an LCD screen to show you how much wattage you are using and other interesting tidbits. I have 4 or 5 of these (actually, I have the 1350 VA version) in my house and I love them. It may sound expensive, but it is cheaper than replacing your PSU, Mobo, or GPU.

I have 2x of the one you linked. Keeps me safe any happy. I should pick up a larger one for Nexus..... it is a bit more hungry than before.
 
It is truly amazing how many computer problems just vanish when you start feeding your system clean, consistent power.

 
I use the 1500VA/900Watt version of the Cyberpower with The Beast.
 
Do those come with software to shut down folding and the computer if power fails?

Not only that I'll do you one better and say that IMHO I've yanked -advmethods out of all my config files (cpu and gpu both) so I'm pulling regular WU's, not these ridiculous ones like 6701 and my PPD has went up by a few K PPD. My 8800GT isn't being so anal rententive and EUE'ing so frequently either, and that is really a happy sight to behold.

IDK what the mentality is these days at PG but if the new vs old WUs are any indication, things aren't all kosher in terms of even attempting of keeping people happy. Not that they necessarily tried to do that before, but at least they put a little more effort forward in the past.

In reference to the credit vs work performed discrepancy, it has been like this more or less since mid last decade. I can't see a reason why this problem surfaces every so often, when it's pretty clear from most folders' perspectives that large credit discrepancies such as the recent P670x and P2684 WUs (or the P2665, P3065, P510x, etc.) should never have arisen. The P604x is an example of how a long-completing WU should be credited, or at least it's a start in that direction.

I personally believe that long-running WUs must have a higher PPD, not even commensurate production to their smaller kin, for reasons I have already stipulated on a number of threads recently; namely, the greater risk in running these WUs due to unanticipated downtime especially at certain times of the year. More criteria in determining proper WU point evaluation need to be considered. Not ranting here, just reflecting on many years of folding.
 
Ok, I just finished that 6050 and it pulled another regular A3 which is a 6025 this time. Has anyone been able to pull a Windows bigadv at all today?
 
I grabbed one about 4 hours ago, then couldn't get another about 2 hours ago, so it is really hit and miss.

When you couldn't pull a bigadv, did it just end up pulling a regular A3 work unit like mine did?
 
when i was running big the only time i couldnt get a big i got an adv, the 6701
 
Great words of wisdom, APOLLO. :) (no sarcasm, being serious - thanks for sharing ;) glad to hear from a longtime folder's POV especially since in the grand scheme of things I'm still a n00b :D)

My dedicated boxen finished a 2684 and grabbed a 6051. My primary is finishing up a 2684, I'll update after I get to work in the morning as to what it grabs. I'm planning on switching off -bigadv though (and have already done so on the boxen currently running the 6051).
 
as much as we like to bitch, anyone folding over a year can attest we are much further than we used to be

an i7 at launch got 8-9 k ppd, thats with 4 vm's running, and systems were laggy as hell

we just get pissed when stan goes back on a working method for something that makes no sense
 
Well, it looks like my folding rig finally pulled another 2684 bigadv sometime this morning. It was actually kind of nice to take a short break from bigadv for a while due to there being a shortage of those. With these new memory requirements, i'm now considering yanking 6 of the 12 gigs in that rig out.

depends how you see it, when I joined in I was using gpu tray folding and notfred boot dvd . It was real easy to setup :D.

With windows bigadv, there's a possibility of way more points to acquire, but installation and tuning is hard. Easier than setting up Vmware/linux, but still something not everyone can do, which is sad when you're trying to bring new people to the game.
 
And don't forget MPI isn't needed anymore I think, that makes it easier
