WIndows 7 and large file problem

Windows 7 is definitely buggy. I've had to hard reset my computer many times.

But what I have noticed is that when the computer is dealing with large files, like a 1.6 gig download that is about to complete, or an UNZIP of a large file, or a setup of a game that is dealing with large files. It will freeze during this process. However, if may freeze after a large file and freeze during a install of directx of something.

The wierd thing is if I wait 5 minutes it will contine as normal, and maybe freeze again, but if I wait it will unfreeze and contine its process until its complete.

While it is frozen I can't really do anything, maybe move a current window around. But its annoying to unzip or install games, could take upwards of 20 minutes. However actuall process time is in the seconds, because when my computer freezes during the install it doesn't do anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

Fixed the problem, posted later in thread.

I've downloaded/unzipped/moved/copied/watched/installed/etc.. single files 4gb+ in size and never had a single issue.

Sounds like a hardware/driver issue on your end.

Are you on a fresh install of the RC, or some other build? I had several issues (driver problems and the like) when I did an upgrade from the beta to the RC via that file editing procedure and since then have installed a clean RC build and have had zero issues with files and drivers.

Sounds like a antivirus app issue to me.
D/L finishes, AV app scans == you wait for it to scan...

What AV you running? I don't even bother to run AV anymore because I don't get viruses on my box..

I forgot about AV programs. I'm suprised that a lot of [H]ard forum members even use them considering the lot of us are computer savy enough to not get any viruses. Windows Update + UAC + general computer knowledge (not opening shady emails / not downloading shady files / not going to shady sites) is way more than enough protection against viruses I would think. Last thing I want on my computer is some resource hog program that is always running doing a job than I can easily do.

Perhaps I'm in a minority in that I don't download cracks/warez of any kind. Since I assume that is really the only reason people use AVs. (And yes, that is a very stupid assumption, I know)

Eddie500,

What build of Windows 7 are you using? Knowing this fact may help figure out what is going on. Many users have had some trouble with Direct X in Windows 7 and have found support at at the TechNet forums. Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to post your question there in addition to here for further support.

Quite the contrary, [H] users should be smart enough to USE an antivirus software and know that it's impossible to keep track of thousands of viruses in the wild. An [H] user would be smart enough to know which AV software is better at managing your system resources and catching as many viruses as possible.

+1...

Yeah, I was thinking Anti-Virus as well. I've been working with 6-7gb+ size files, and I've no problem at all, escept for NOD32 scanning them for about 20-30 seconds, which dosent freeze up my computer, but does freeze up the process.

That's funny. For me, it has been rock solid. Maybe it's your computer that's buggy. Only time I've had to reset the computer is when finding the highest stable overclock or similar. Same with Vista...and XP. Maybe if you didn't start the thread with putting the blame where it doesn't belong, you'd get more useful responses.

Update any AHCI drivers and make sure the drives are correctly configured. Make sure no background tasks keep thrashing the drive (indexing and superfetch run at low priority and will not affect disk performance noticably).

Re. antivirus.. personally I always install an AV program, but I turn off most of the real time scanning and manually scan any files I get off the net or other untrusted sources. Also schedule a full scan to run every now and then.

We have a winner. Being [H] has nothing to do with being so arrogant that you think you're too smart to get a virus. Being [H] is knowing it can and will happen and you may never know you have a virus unless you have a virus scanner. There's a thread and Genmay I would love to be able to link to showing what happens to arrogant people.

As for the OP, your problem sounds more related to a possible hardware problem or possible software conflict rather than the OS. I had little trouble with the original public beta of 7 and none of it had to do with the stability of the OS. I'm currently running the RC and have found no problems at all so far. The only thing I haven't tried that I was having trouble with on the beta is Punkbuster and games that use it. Otherwise, everything is working perfectly fine for me.

I dont run any Anti V.. Havn't in over 6 years.. I dont do anything on my computer that would require one.. Dont go any where but the web sites I know and I game.. Thats all it's used for.. I got one virus and it was because I was looking for a file for a friend and I missclicked on a link.. I knew I got it as soon as I did.. Put my AV disk in, installed it ran a scan and all was well.. So don't look at porn and dont file share and you wont have any problems..

Call me arrogant all you want but I recently joined in the Microsoft Security Essentials beta and ran it on 3 of my computers, 2 of which have not been formatted in about 2 years (thats 2 years of unprotected internet usage) and guess what? Full system scans for all 3 of them came out 100% clean. Doubt me if you want but I still think the need for an AV is only for people who foolishly use the internet and/or P2P for wrong doings like porn or warez.

To reiterate once more, I think with Windows Update and UAC, the chances of getting a virus are very slim.

Anyway, my bad on derailing the thread somewhat. I admit the first time I posted I regretted it the next day since it had no place to begin with.

I'm just going to say that's not realistic for many people, especially on this site...

I haven't had a virus on my computer in YEARS either, but I always keep virus protection on my computer just in case.

Case in point: I was over at a friends' house the other day. I put my thumb drive into his computer to give him a file, then I drive home. I get home and put the thumb drive back into my computer, and my virus scan pops up warning me there's a keylogger on my thumb drive. So awesome. His computer was the only other computer I put my thumb drive into all week. By the way, my friend is definitely computer literate and he also says he has no need for virus scan. But which of us two has the virus?

Anyway, OP, I had this problem on my XP build a while back. Hard drive failed a week later. So, +1 for failing hard drive.

Here's another "Oh shit....I'm glad I had AV" story....

One day I was on Google News and did a search on Bruce Springsteen. It was around the time his keyboardist passed away. Google News returned article hits on my search and had a small thumbnail picture next to the links. It was a cool pic so I clicked on it to enlarge.

BAM. Kaspersky went apeshit.

Seems the thumbnail pic was linked to a malware site and it tried to put a Trojan on my PC as soon as I clicked on the pic.

Never in a million years would I have guessed that I could get a virus from clicking on a Google News search-returned thumbnail pic.

I run AV on all my PCs now. I really don't know WHY you wouldn't want to run AV. The current AV products have ZERO performance impact on PCs.

Just to give an update on this, I fixed the problem. The problem was the new drivers I downloaded from Nvidia for my 750I FTW motherboard. The Nforce drivers, I went into system / device manager / and rolled back the driver for my SATA controller.

This fixed the problem. Not sure why nforce would put out a later driver that would cause problems for my computer...

As usual, problems blamed on Windows when it's usually something else.

You would be surpsied who many people I have called, told them there were infected ()because I didn't hope they where sending spam on purpose) and if they didn't install an AV and clean their PC, we would close their line.

And the excuses are always the same:
"I have run for years without a virus"...yeah and you thought your PC was fine untill I called too.
"I know what links I click, so I don't see how that is possible"...and still you are sending spam.
"I don't have virus, your system must have me mixed up"...nope, it's your IP and if no action is taken you will be closed due to spam.
"My taskmanager dosn't whow any strange processes?"...and still you are spamming.

Running no AV is like driving blindfolded on the highway....not the smartest thing you can do.
