Has any one used this yet ? Am i correct to assume that it is a windows based storage software just like WHS but for bigger quantities and more drives and support for iscsi.

It seems to me to be like all the other NAS devices available - using propreity software on itself - of which you can chose several raid solutions 0, 1, and 5. It doesn't appear to do much else though

looks like it aslo has a web interface through a browser witch is sweet, but i use rdp for all the other servers so meh!

My main thought was to use it in junction with my 2008r2 hyperv server, id like to know if the windows 2008 storage server is pooled or only raid, as i want to add more and more hard drives for storage and stuff.

well actually, yes and no true.

Anyways, i just installed the technet version it installed then brought me to a desktop to log in, asks for a password, lol, nice, no password was setup or given. UGG

Thank god for virtual servers

Default password is wSS2008!, its well known and all that.

Fundamental different to normal Windows is the inclusion of the ISCSI target.

WELL FML, that password worked, however where the hell is that password given out to ? not in my tech-net account or online anywhere lol!

It's running now to play and see exactly what this software does.

thank you !

No worries, I guess they do it different cos normally only OEM's would get their hands on this. In truth it isn't that special imho, there are other free storage solutions far better. I do use it for some ISCSI targets though, basically because I am lazy :)

what sucks right now is i can't capture the mouse on the screen, it's pissing me off :( BAH

mouse not captured in remote desktop session

I just can't get it to work, ive tried everything, its weird because i can log into my other machines with out problems at all.GRR!!

I'm interested in the data deduplication in Storage Server. But its not showing up as part of my MSDN (only Storage Server Embedded is in there). Is that available somewhere else?

That's what you want:

Instructions and Resources

You must first install Windows Server 2008 R2 before installing this product.

If you are running it on hyper-v and rdp'ing to the host, you must install the hyper-v integration components, connect to the VM and I think under tools, hit Insert integration tools or whatever it is.

SiS (Single Instance Storage) has a standalone installer that gets extracted when you run the big executable (WSS2008R2+iSCSITarget33.exe) that's inside the ISO you download from Technet (and presumably MSDN).

SiS is great for multi-user environments with many small files, but mostly useless for home storage/media storage.

I think i might give this a try, do i have to have special network cards for this to work with my other 2008 servers ?

correct me again if i'm wrong,

iscsi, is like having a internal drive connected except, that its over Ethernet ?
