Win98 folding info requested

I have a few licenses for Windows 98 and am thinking of installing them on a couple PCs I have at the house. I was wanting some input on stability and ability to get Big WU or some QMDs on these systems.

Does Windows 98 pull QMDs?
How stable is it running dedicated?

I have two extra processors (2.4 P4 533FSB, 1.8 Celeron) that have the SSE2 instruction set so I think they are available to pull the bigger WU. Both have a GB of RAM in them. They just currently sit there connected to the fold server doing timeless tinkers and some advmethods WU.

I think Win98 would be stable enough, as long as they're dedicated boxes. Just keep in mind that Win98 can't handle more than about 768 MB RAM, so you'll either have to put in less RAM or make a tweak (I think to the system.ini file?) to force Windows to only use 768 of the 1GB.

Win98 has a pretty small memory footprint anyway, so I think that even if you're pulling QMDs, 512 should be plenty.

 
Yea, I was curious about the RAM limits in 98.

The reason your not pulling QMD's under nix is due to the fact Stanford just does not make many available to the nix AS.

98 should be stable as long as you don't install any programs... :) Use VNC or what not to monitor them. 512 RAM (no onboard video) and your be good to go.

Or do what RPH_Arrow (sp?) did, take a nix distro, install WINE and use the Windows client to pull QMD's. Should fold pretty nicely.
 
If you use Win98 I think you have to use an older console client. I don't think you can use the version 5 client. Thus, I don't think you can get bigpackets or QMDs since I believe they are only for the newer client. Plus, you will not be able to install it as a service. That was only for Win2k and WinXP. I would really think about using a linux distro like Foldix. If you're worried about QMD's then run a linux distro, WINE and the Windows client like marty suggested.

The Wine under Linux is probably the way to go. Should probably get on that. :eek:

 
You could use U_M's Foldixe distro. You just need an empty hard drive.

 
The only core that uses the SSE2 instructions to speed up the progress of the core,that I understand, is for the QMDs. I have been reading that Stanford has a very limited supply of QMDs setup to run on Linux boxen since they do not report the CPUID to the server. Windows boxes do. I guess I am just a QMD addict. They have ran great on my 3.6 and 2.8 prescotts. The cost has been miniminal to set one up just to run them.

Actually, the memory limit on WIN98 is 512MB. You can make registry edits to change that, but it get's messy.

Ding, ding ding, we have a winnar! You cannot run version 5 on Win9x. That's partially why I finally upgraded my one 98 boxen at the beginning of this year to 2K.

If you want QMDs, Linux can get them on both AMD and Intel, but not nearly as often as Windows does on Intel. Windows or Wine is better for getting them.

Sounds like mage needs to do up a foldix w/ wine deal.

Yes, I'll have some red wine with my foldix please.

No clue how messy this would be, or if it's worth the time.

I guess the premise is, that is a free OS, and easy.... OS for QMD cores. I know the other nix distros will do this (having brain fart, Arkine from OC Forums) deally will do it.
