win7 service pack?

Well I just installed the x64 version it simply because it was there. Everything still seems the same...

Does this SP have anything useful for non-techies?
 
I'm downloading and will probably install this at work today. I doubt there will be much with it.

From what I understand it's just a collection of all the patches since launch. If there is anything beyond that it isn't much.
 
You folks DO realize that's a beta/RC product, right? Right?

"The Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Release Candidate (RC) is now available to download."

They're not done with it yet, and beta/RC Service Packs can't be uninstalled - if you install it and have problems, you're gonna end up reinstalling the whole OS. They're very close to the final "Gold" aka RTM build at t his point - rumors abound that they have actually gone "Gold" last week or so and are just holding off on the actual release for whatever reason(s) they have.

Regardless, it's so close to being "out" that you're better off waiting instead of installing that release candidate, just ain't worth the potential for problems I'd say.
 
Wel, yes I realize it's a risk, but that's fine for me. Some people like to spend cash on shiny new gadgets/phones, but beta software is free... I used the MS Office 2010 beta for many months (and the key seemed to have permanently activated the full copies of MS Office 2010 proper as well), same for Win 7 beta. Using the most recent MPC-HC beta, firefox beta, IE 9 beta etc.

It's a risk I don't mind taking on my normal PC, but would never try it out on my HTPC where I care much more about stability. Unfortunately this Win7 SP doesn't seem to do much....

Not true, the bit about uninstalling, I've uninstalled SP1 Beta and RC1 for Windows 7..it's in control panel->programs and features->windows updates.
 
Being RC it may end up being the final release. Unless there is a problem, then they make another RC.
 
Other than doing some preliminary testing for compatibility issues with your software...nothing positive can come from running a Beta SP. It just a bad idea.
