win2k and core duo

any issues I should know about, been thinking of going back to 2k..

performance loss or gains??

little faster I would think, I know for sure the guys going for world records in the Super Pi benchmark for core 2 duos prefer to use w2k /shrug.

Must be W2K PRO if my memory serves me correctly to run dual cores/processors.

Yeah, benches should be faster..... but win2k3 server is the fastest.....

With a C2D processor, I wouldn't consider anything less than XP. XP works 100% with current hardware and software, so there's no reason to go backwards any farther. Why run current hardware with a 6 year old OS?

You're only choices are Server and Workstation, and both supported dual procs.

Thanks I stand corrected, I forgot what the proper name was.

And as far as it being 6 year old, that means absolutlely nothing to software. I run XP64 bit for some flow analysis software I need but its not any faster in normal apps than XPpro and slower in some.

You want fast, load up DOS 3.3 on a P4 system and run something that just crunches numbers. IMO W2K was the last best windows, just massive bloatware now with MS slowly using its OS monopoly (yes I know, I have linux on a dual boot but my app and my game wont run on it) to take control of the entire computing "experience" is the current buzzword.

That made me laugh because I ran DR Dos on my last AMD single core just to see what would happen. Then I added WordPerfect 5.0. Talk about fast……sheese.

Win 2k is still a very solid platform and more companies then Microsoft would like are still running it because they see no reason to change.

That said I took XP off this machine and switched to Vista Ultimate and frankly was pretty shocked at how fast it really is. This is an E6600 at 3.4 with 2 gigs of ram and on many things Vista is faster.

When I switched to XP-Pro is was pretty clear from day one a service pack or two were going to be needed. I don’t see that here at all, it simply works. That alone will create a problem for MS because many people won’t buy till at least the first SP comes out. MS keeps saying don’t look too hard for it they really were not planning one. Other then third party drivers maturing and some rewritten software, again third party I like Vista a lot.

With Vista its pay now or pay later..... I got mine and I couldnt be happier..... Ive never really use my documents but in Vista Im surprised that Im actually use that folder.... lol.... Using XP right now and it feels outdated.....

And to think that I was one of the last one ( people I know ) to switch to XP from W2K.... Win2K just feels so stable for some reason.....
