Will upgrading my SSD make a difference?

I'm currently using a 64GB Crucial M4 SSD. I've seen a lot of good reviews on it before i bought it but over the past year and a half i've had nothing but problems. Such as the system resetting by itself. For no Reason which I've done every firmware update to this day for and it still wants to reboot for no reason every once in a while.

Windows logs show nothing for it and when i turn the computer back on the ssd doesnt show in the bios. I have to unplug my computer for a couple minutes then go into the bios and set it as the main boot drive all over again, every time.

Faulty SSD?

Either way my question was, Will something like the new 840 pro 256 show a noticeable improvement in everyday usage such as reliability, boot times, and file transfers?
I've looked at reviews and in the benchmarks the 840 pro eats the m4 series alive.

Also, the rig in my sig is a very old rig thats not what i'm currently running lol
 
You won't see any performance in boot time. However, you will notice that your file transfers will be faster. Given that your SSD is currently flakey to say the least, upgrading wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yea i was hoping someone could provide some insight into my SSD problems as well. My main reason for changing the SSD is the problems im having. I'm not 100% sure it's the SSD thought. Could it be the motherboard?

It could be either, I would suggest trying the SSD in another computer. How about putting a different hard drive on that SATA port in the current machine.
 
I just realized that a couple of months ago while troubleshooting this problem i moved the ssd to a sata 2 port and never changed it back. Maybe thats causing problems after the firmware update. I don't think it should.
 
It could be causing issues, try switching it around and give it a little bit of time and see how it works out.
 
you wont see much of a difference going to a new drive imo

i will say i had similar problems with my first SSD drives, for a while i thought it was my overclock but finally narrowed it down to my drives, but let me say my drive was a first gen agility from ocz that ended up being known for issues. with your drive being so new instead of getting a new one i would recommend you rma it for a replacement to see if that solves your problem

that being said if your system is overclocked (or even if it isnt) check to make sure your HSF is clean of dust and that all other fans are working to rule out it isnt a overheating issue
 
Is your motherboard BIOS current? There could be SSD related improvements.
 
As other users stated:

-Try SSD in another computer
-Try another HDD with your computer
-Diagnose with SSD diagnostics software

If the above points to a faulty SSD, RMA it.
If it doesn't point to a faulty SSD, well it should point to something else

Have you tried running at stock to see if the issue persists? Your OC maybe not be as stable as you think.

Have you tested the memory to verify it is okay?

Have you tested the PSU to see if it is okay?

Ive tested the overcllock many times. ive also left it qt stocl speeds for a couple weeks. And still had random reboots. Even while I wasnt using it.

How would I go about testing the power supply?

Hi, brfitzp1337,

I suggest you ask the gurus over in the Power Supplies forum the best way to approach testing the PSU. A multimeter will be one piece of equipment you will need.

I would use Memtest86+ to test the RAM. The folks in the Memory forum can give you pointers on that. Usually, you'd want to run the test overnight for each stick and then together.

the current new firmware for the m4 fixes alot of issues
the one before that was shitty caused the drive to go into a brick state if you interupted the power to the drive. I would burn the firmware update to a cd and flash the new firwmare to your m4 that might fix your problem
 
Honestly, if you are having stability issues, the first thing to do is either remove the O/C or tone it down. Run it for a while and see how it is working and go from there. I have seen situations where people run prime all night and still have stability problems, particularly with people who O/C the bclock on sandy bridge cpu's, like the auto O/C thing does.
 
I would turn C3 and C6 reporting off in your BIOS if you have those settings. If you have the option in your BIOS for 'Hot Swap' under you SATA settings, turn it on for all HDDs and off for ODDs. See if that helps.
