they are slightly different. but i can still crossfire right? what are some limiting factors here?
 
my 6850's are the same way, just a tad different and they crossfire just fine
 
Yeah, they just need to both be 68xx or 69xx or whatever to be able to crossfire.
 
Yep, AMD's Crossfire isn't as picky about cards as SLI. You could Crossfire your 6870 with any card that starts with 68xx. As long as the first 2 numbers in the series match you're good to go. My only recommendation would be to put the dual fan 6870 below the Reference Design 6870. The reason for this is that the reference card will exhaust the hot air straight out of the back of the case whereas the dual fan design will only move the heat away from the card, but most of it will circulate in the case so it'd be smart to have that one on the bottom and give it a better chance to get the hot air away from the video cards rather than have it at the top of the ref card keeping that hot air in that area of the case.
