Will RX 480 Availability Be a Problem like Nvidia 1070/1080?

I am fairly interested in the RX 480 for a SFF build I am doing, but I have been dealing with the hell of trying to get a pair of 1080's for my main rig. If AMD is claiming to be selling the 480 as a budget card and to sell many of them, is there any indication that there will be a shortage of cards like there has been with the Nvidia 1070/1080 situation? I only am wondering because the excuse for Nvidia is the limited number of 16nm cards that are good enough to sell. Since AMD will be on a new node as well, it had me wondering.

The demands of new AMD cards are going to be way more aggressive than both GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 together due to coin mining.. worse than a high market share demand of new product are coin miners which buy AMD cards in high quantities, even softer miners are going to buy at least 4 or 5 cards due to the lower power usage than actual cards.. so yes, the out of stock situation may be worse with AMD cards as happened with R9 290 and R9 290X for months..

No?

The day of sale is the same as reviews for that reason you might easily get your hands on it. Kyle said in the other thread that he expects custom AIB version soonish after (July). So I don't see that happening.

Good convo going on now on this same topic here: amd rx 480 is 229 dollars

Consensus is, heck yes, there's going to be availability issues. Will it be as bad as 1070/1080 -- maybe not, but probably worse.

Well, I said expect to see AIB cards soon, I did not speak to quantities.

Guys, fear not. AMD will probably send 10k cards per day to each retailer. They remember what happened with the hawaii launch with miners, they probably want an excess of cards to make sure the miners don't muck up the availability. Also, when the mining craze was in full swing, bitcoins were selling for over a thousand dollars a piece, and even though people were not mining them with gpus then, it brought attention to other alt coins and mining. That is not really a thing this time, mining demand will likely be lower. If wrong just let me know.

But stock? They will have enough production to do the job that needs to be done, obliterate all their enemies. The cards will flow from deep within the earth in a stream of light, and finally vanquish the evil 950/960/970/980 that has been holding the minds of gamers hostage for so long.

AMD better have a solid driver to go with the launch.

Nvidia is using TSMC and AMD Global Foundries so there isn't a good connection between the two. So supply could be better, or worse. I doubt we'll know until release day.

to that effect we might not know if AMD has been stock piling rx480 for the past month either, so we may never know even if they have a solid hard launch.

Who mines anymore? Thought this was pretty much dead for a while now as it wasn't profitable.

Lisa says there will be stock on shelves on the 29th but there was no indication of how many. unless a big retailer has an employee lets it slip as to how many are coming in we will have no idea. BUT...
like araxie said, those damn dirty miners might try and snatch them all up. so if there is a "shortage" i'd blame them ;)

Where did you pull this tidbit of information from? Your bum? AMD isn't shipping millions of card per day (between all the retailers). Even Apple doesn't ship iPhones at those levels.

I pulled it out of an infinite well of wishful thinking.

anddddd i just got a RMA notice from powercolor that it may take 2-3 weeks to get my card back... I gotta find my amazon credit card now lol

I have 11 video cards currently going full tilt. I plan to replace everything older then my 380s. As of last friday it was about as profitable as its EVER been, but there was an exploit friday that wrecked it. I went from making $1050 a month to $550.

Originally I was planning on 5 of them off the bat, but it might be more if i sell what i have before they launch. Honestly if it wasnt for the crap wiring in my house, id probably just get 2. However im sick of my 290x's tripping the breaker.

Interesting. I thought it has been dead for a while but thats cool.

Is it confirmed. You are reporting it like it's a for sure number. It's a rumor.

We shall see soon enough, I was expecting much more from a midrange chip. They should be able to get more GPU cores per wafer even f yields are same.

It was, then it wasnt, it was, then it wasnt... When i mined bitcoins with 5870s i made after electric $150-200 a month. When i mined litecoins with 290x i made $700 in one week but mostly $300-400. Ethereum has been very stable, price was outrunning difficulty which is sweet ... then the exploit. I havent always mined, but even when i quit litecoin i knew of some X11/scrypt coins that were asic / fpga resistant but the profit was so low i didnt bother. Even when ethereum switches to a proof of stake i plan on mining something else. I think 15 video cards spread throughout the house means i shouldnt have a heat bill this winter.

I think its more like a launch day, 8k should be fine for one day. If they are stocking up all the time than they should indeed sell plenty of them. There were reports about reference cards going in to some oem builds as well so seems like this card has many places to go. I am just glad we will have 8k for the first day. I think most AIB's will be heavily focused on non reference designs as there is probably higher price tag there and more profit.

nah man there were launches with 50k cards before lol. Those are the ones that we never saw things go in and out of stock.

8k across an entire continent, they will go fast.

I will have to try it shortly. Waiting on a RMA return from XFX for my 390x. I essentially have "free" electricity as its part of my rent but if i start some mining farm i sure my landlord would realize something is up at some point lol. But essentially it would be all profit until he does.

Please let me know what cards had 50K stock on launch day in NA.

"The Inquirer says NVIDIA and its partners are shipping GeForce 8800 GT cards around the globe. The site claims about 50,000 8800 GT graphics cards will be available on Monday, which is 2.5x as much as usual."

quote from your link says globally not NA like he asked...

it was 2.5 X the usual and if my memory serves me right, which it usually does, that was the only launch that had no cards go in and out of stock at launch.

Granted that launch was an an older 90nm fab than the newest process node at the time and also nV had the g80 chip ready just before the g70 launch... so they had a lot of time to make sure things were going well on the fab side of things.

True but this is just for north america though. Kyle himself said that he had to calculate this number out so it may possibly be more. That number could be what they have already shipped to retailers, could possibly be more as we still have 8 days left in launch. Who knows plus we got cards in india too, lol. So sure seems like they are available all over the world. We can't just go by 8k number, we might have 30k around the globe, thats still decent.

well yeah, give that, most launches don't have 50k cards at launch world wide, no where near, and I don't think this launch is like that either.

I was in India on vacation for the 6800 launch, they got 6800 ultras and those cards were very hard to find.

North America is the biggest market, then UK/Europe then Asia. 8k in the in NA, something less in UK, something less in Asia. They won't hit 30k. I would think 20k or so no more than 25k.

True. But I am thinking they will have little more than 8k in US. Since this card is showing up ready to sell like almost every where. We shall see. You are right 20-25k seems more realistic for launch day around the world. Especially since we know some OEMs are probably getting a bulk of these chips as well as well for apple.

I have no idea about "around the globe" and that is why I stated NA. If AMD can keep 8K cards flowing into retailers every day, that will be awesome for AMD and consumers looking to buy at this price point.

Yeah I expected more, cause we are talking about midrange cards, not high end *which the 8800gt was the third to highest card at the time pretty much the main stream segment cards of today, well without the ultra (which cane much later)

It does make me wonder how many units for 470 and 460 will be release on the same day. What is the typical binning ratio between a high tier card and a tier below?

no typical numbers for bin %'s, it changes based on the product but AMD would have their internal projections of sales per segment, so they would go based on that. So you might get full GPU's in the lower tiers if yields are are really good for the higher tier product.

Probably, at this point I bet companies purposely hold back supply so they can raise prices.

Not in this case if AMD wants market share its stupid to hold back supply! Thats just common sense.
