amd rx 480 is 229 dollars

Nice!

This can't come soon enough.

i am so ready to give up crossfire.

What the hell were you thinking you typed text instead of just a link ;)

Now those custom designs come through end of July ?

You will probably see them 2 weeks or so after. Never really seen custom and reference launched at the same time.

I seen a release date of July 7 2016 for a Sapphire card. Not sure if legit.

wow...i was expecting $239-249.....it's almost like RTG is doing the last thing people expect on this release.

Crazy all this over a $199 card.

Hopefully they're drop a tonne of them, I think there is a lot of demand right now. But I don't know if there will be demand in a few months. That's less certain.

I mean realistically, around $200 is the volume seller price point for GPUs. It would be nice to see AMD have a hit product, can you imagine what would happen if they went out of business?

Curious to see what a good, custom AIB RX 480 8GB will be like. Hopefully with some nice overclocking headroom it'll hit Fury levels of performance at 1440p-4K. I'm thinking of buying one to play with until Vega/Ti/Titan/Whatever comes out.

Do you know if the power/heat it quite a bit over a normal 480?....Yes or no would do!

LOL kyle barely got off the phone with amd and you are already asking him to brake whatever trust they two might have built. No no no, lol. Do what you gotta do kyle!

wait wha?......Isn't he buying the card? I must of missed that he got a review sample and is under NDA?

Well, Kyle is a tech journalist, so I'm sure he's heard a thing or two "off the truck" as it were. ;)

Last I heard AMD was not sending him a card (like they did the Nano) and he would be buying a review sample. If that is the case he is under no NDA.

Did anyone else catch these comments by Gibbo?

No one here is saying it is going to rival a 1070/980ti in performance... But if it gets to Fury/Nano level, that is spitting distance, and at $230-$300 that would be an absolutely fantastic value next to the $380-$450 1070... People in the $200-$300 bracket that would have jumped up to the 970 if they were upgrading last round, wont be jumping up to the 1070 this round with the 480 giving equal or better value in the larger market segment...

nVidia fanboys with their strawman arguments again. No one is arguing 480 vs 1070 performance... the hype is over 480 vs 1070 value.

like this

So basically he is talking about stock performance him basically referencing other leaks, which we all know it to be around 390/390x/980. Thats exactly what he is talking about, ofcourse he is not going to speculate on overclocking as that will probably falls under nda as he is giving numbers out on the product at that point.

That is flawed logic

How much were the the 970's?

Are those the same people that would want a similar performance card (yeah rx480 will be a bit higher) that costs less? If they had money to get a 970 in the past, why won't they want even more performance in the same price bracket?

And yeah the midrange marketshare numbers are smaller (if you want to talk about mainstream and value segments those combined are the same as performance) to the the performance marketshare numbers, I suggest you look it up if you want to make comments like that. PS I have pointed this out at least twice in two other threads.

Google search key words, JPR markeshare performance mainstream, look under images, you will find it.
Once you find that chart, then look up what JPR marketshare segments compare to actual graphics card segments set up by the IHV's you will need to do a google search on that too, which is easy to find with keywords: JPR marketshare breakdown. Then please post your understanding here. You will come up with the same conclusion as I have, Performance is equal to both mainstream and value segments combined.

First and only time for you

Add-in-Board report - Jon Peddie Research Publications

JPR mainstream is a combination of value and mainstream segments from IHV's point of view, this is because JPR catalogies AIB partner cards as a bundle with a complete system price, so the break down is this

anything less that ~1500 is mainstream (which entail cards all the way up to 300 bucks)

anything between ~1500-2000 is performance and (which entails cards from 301 to 650)

anything above ~2000 is enthusiast (anything above 650)

He also said that he only powered one up to test for noise and that he's too busy to test. He isn't exactly a good source on how well it performs or overclocks.

Gibbo knows, we know it, even if he himself hasn't tested it, he would have gotten performance numbers or had one of his employees run it or has talked to people inside AMD.

To be fair he hasn't tested the card yet and is just speculating. Overclockers UK Forums - View Single Post - Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

But I do agree that 980 Ti performance for $200 was always too good to be true, and the hype just got completely out of hand. Much better to derail the hype train now than to have everybody be disappointed on launch day because of some unrealistic hype in their head.

He has to sell these cards, he can't let over hype kill sales, otherwise he will have left over stock.

You are king of strawman arguments.

Hype about 480 isnt about its performance compared to 1070...

Hype about 480 is about its value compared to 1070, and its value in general...

The end.

Argue with yourself all you want about how your logic makes sense and your math adds up, but no one is talking about the crap you are talking about 90% of the time. Speculation and unconfirmed numbers will never add up to proof of anything, so stop wasting your time trying to derail hype with it. I am done, enjoy your "You just cant beat me at my logics!" post.

Yeah I knew you won't look up the stuff because you are the atypical of being an enthusiast here to understand the hardware and their markets yet you want to post about it like you do lol. Go figure, so I did the work for you even before you posted your not so witty remark, you still go on with your ill informed posts.

Guess you never been to WCCF and read the comments there?

No one here, as he said, is not someone there. Personally, the $229 price is fantastic and far more likely for people to buy than something twice the price.

I'm so glad people are finally getting a good, hard reality check. The RX480 will NOT compete with 980 Ti levels of performance and THAT'S OKAY. A $200 card that can keep up with a 980 (maybe not beat it) is still a LOT to get excited about. I don't know why people automatically assume that AMD is going to attempt to compete with the 1070.

Thats why I don't understand why people keep comparing them to the 1070. It isn't meant to go against it.

It's like Chevrolet announcing the new ZR1 Corvette, and people going APE saying "YES! NOW WE HAVE AN AMERICAN CAR TO COMPETE WITH THE McLAREN P1!!"

No.. Not even close.. Its different and THAT'S OKAY.

Competition will always come at different segments, different price points, as long as the message is clear from AMD what they are doing, and why they are doing something, to set expectation correctly, it only benefits them at the end. And they have been doing this all along with this launch.

well for what it can do its damn good, just like the rx480. Just can't expect the same performance at such a different price range.

On the lines of marketing from my previous post, there has been no overclockers dream screw up or akin to that yet that we have seen/heard. No skewed benchmarks by AMD that don't use AF or lower AA settings to point to, none of the usual AMD screw ups that we have see from their CPU or GPU launches as of late.

It's a product of applying napkin math to rumors and and fudging the numbers until you reach the desired result (which in this case is 980Ti / 1070 performance). [UNCONFIRMED_FIRESTRIKE_SCORE]*[EXPECTED_OC]*[VOODOO]=1070. Assume the expected overclock scales better than 1:1 because aliens. Then adjust [VOODOO] until desired result is achieved. At this point you can declare Nvidia is garbage.

The other method was working backwards from the "2.8x performance per watt" and applying assumptions to the power draw figures used to make the comparison.

Fair enough, $229 is a good price for 390X performance if the card lived up to that expectations.

I find it funny that razor liked your post, when he is one of the 2 main men fudging napkin math with rumors.

At best, people on this forum speculated that the card would get up to Fury/Nano levels (when OCed)... Not based on math, but based on news rumors and leaked benchmarks that specifically mention those ranges... No napkin math involved.

Its the nVidia fanboys that started comparing it to the 1070, and then using napkin math and rumors to 'debunk' the hype that no one here was claiming, all so they could claim it to be a failure and not meeting expectations before it ever even hits the shelves.

The easiest numbers to debunk are the ones people makeup themselves :D;)

you find things hard because you don't understand what is made up and what is not made up lol. I never make things up out of thin air *and if I did i would say something like hypothetically or something across those lines, I think about it and understand where those numbers come from and then post. That is what is called deductive logic, or deductive reasoning which ever you prefer, because apparently you don't like the use of the word logic. This is why I have always stated that those overclocks were just insane to get to the performance of the 1070, they didn't add up. That is your problem you take things half baked and continue with that train of thought, it will get you far in life.

Aint that the truth.

According to nVidia fanboys, this will be a sub 970/390 card that jumps to sub 980/390x when OCed, that will also jumping to 225w and super high temperatures when OCed... And there will be stock shortages... And the 8gbs will start at $250... And... All proven with math and market research.

We shall see :)
