Will Intel 865P chipset support 64bit computing with a P4 630?

Does anyone know if the P4 630 64bit functionality will work with a 865P chipset? I'm planning to upgrade my board to an Asus P5P800 with 630 chip. If it doesn't, I would probably be better served by a 5xxJ chip.

It is my understanding that you have to use a 915/925 chipset for this to function. I may be wrong though.

I also believe you have to use a i915 series chipset or i925X or i925XE chipset.

its a good question, and something worth looking into.

mainly because i865 was designed for support (well almost) for presscotts, and we know now that all previous prescotts had 64bit extensions.

I'll stay safe and say no it wont work, that way you wont end up wasting money ;)

If you want to get a 630, you can pick up a good, cheap 915 board. I just got the ASUS P5GD1 with a 640. No problems so far (at least motherboard/chip related).

I recommend a 915 board if you have absolutely no intention of overclocking and don't need the 1066 bus and/or don't plan on buying an EE processor.

yea, you need to pick up a board with a 915 or 925x chipset for the 64 bit p4s. I cant wait till i get one, i am going to get a new P4 with 64bit and 2mb L2 cache, new intel board with SLI(when ever they release the nForce5 chipsets so intel can have SLI) and then of course another 6600 gt for my SLI! :D :D

I wouldn't buy a new Intel Chipset until the 945/955 come out. No point in buying something that is going to be "old" technology in a month or two. My $.02 :).

^ Agreed. Dual cores are right around the corner, so why buy a 925 when the 955 is gonna be released in 4-6 months.

Why does the chipset have anything to do with the 64bit capability of the system? I thought it was all in the processor. Just the way that the AMD boards support both 32bit and 64bit.

i think another factor in the board to allow you for 64bit is the FSB, and the 865 doesnt allow the 800, only the 533 i believe. But when you go up to the 9xx series it gives the 800fsb.

just a thought.

Too bad you don't have a LGA775 board. The P4 3.x "F" processors have EM64T enabled like the 6x0 series, but also DEP and 1MB cache like the 5x0J models.

The LGA775 i875P boards support the "F" processors, and S478 boards support the P4 "F" EE processors (too expensive, IMO).

865 allows for 800fsb not just 533 (845PE was last 533 only chipset).

The i865 supports 800MHz FSB, and supposedly from the abit-usa.com forums, people have already been running the 6xx series on the Abit AS8. Anyone else here have a Abit AS8? How about the 5xx series processors on the AS8?

Does it need a BIOS flash to run correctly? I would assume so, but just checking.

I don't know, Abit still hasn't released any new BIOSes for the board since December, so either they aren't going to officially support the 600 series processors on the AS8, or they are having a really hard time perfecting the BIOS. According to a couple sources across the web, the setup actually does work, but I'd like to see it from a review site before I go out and purchase one.

Probably a good plan to wait and see.

I wondered the same thing about the 845PE chipset (400/533) and the 533mhz s478 prescotts like the 2.4a and 2.8a. Would they work?
