Will I ever make it to 200K? :(

I've been folding for almost 2 years now and I still havent hit 200K. I'm currently at 170,449 points. I've lost a few boxen somewhere. I'm down to 3 per F@H.com and I had at least 6 going full tilt about two months ago. The other 3 have quit folding for some unknown reason and I dont have regular access to them.

Hopefully, my new budget rig (Pentium 915 Dual Core) will kick out its first 2 WU's sometime this afternoon. Its been crunching on those for over a week now.

I'll be tweaking my brother in laws Compaq Presario later this week so that will be folding soon too.(3.2ghz Celeron D)

I'm even considering powering up the old compaq proliant ML330 server I've got in the closet. I dont know if its worth it though since its only a P3 850 with 1.25gig ram.

I enjoy folding and being a member of the [H]orde. My only regret is that I dont have the resources to do more. oh well...

<end rant>

if it makes you feel any better...i had to borg my house, office, wife's office and a friend's office to get to a ppd that some of these new systems can do by themselves. In other words....keep with it and eventually you will get there. Your conrtibution is just has important as everyone else's here :)

it becomes an addiction. i'm a broke college student and i got the folding bug so hard i now have a small folding farm running in my garage with 6 machines backed up with 2 UPS systems so even power outages won't stop me folding!! not to go to work to make money for more folding rigs!!! bwahahaha i think i should hit 200k in about 90 days. time to borg my work! 5000+ machines that i don't have access to :(

That server would probably kick out around 400 PPD running UD. Just a thought

Better get on that...i think if you borged that many, you might out produce FLECOM

problem is its all state of california equipment. so its highly illegal without the proper authorization via the State CIO which is quite an undertaking. but would be worth it to outproduce FLECOM!! maybe if i can just borg some of the mainframes in our server room i'll hit 200k in a few days. one can dream right?

I said the same thing about 1.5 Million points ago. Just ask all your friends/coworkers etc to let you run F@H on their machines. All they can say is no. I went to my boss a couple days ago and explained about what F@H was and she thought it was pretty cool and had no problem with me sticking it on our work machines..now to borg the boxes as I come to them

The money for my folding boxen cost me an arm ........ :p
But it means I can budget around £2,000 a year on new hardware if I want.

The best way to up you PpD is to run one of the new clients.

It used to be 1 Ghz CPU would get you ~50 PpD.
But put an X18** in that box and run the GPU client & you'll get ~500 PpD.

Or my Dual-Dual Opteron system, 4x CPU clients for ~500 PpD, 1x SMP client for ~2,000 PpD.
May try adding a second SMP client and see how badly it slows the first one down.

With my last upgrade I've gone over to mainly GPU or SMP folding, 25% more power used for 100% increase in PpD.
If/when I can get Piglet SMP folding, I will be averaging 1,000 PpD per Boxen.

Ps. Looking at a pair of Clovertown's for my next upgrade.

Luck ............ :D

i never said without permission ;)

i never said without permission ;)

well i have all the folding programs i need on a usb key i always carry with me so if i can get 2 minutes with any unlocked computer it will be drafted under my name (with permission of course).

"Incase of potential borg break glass and grab usb"

F@h gui client for windows
F@h console client for windows
F@h gui client for mac
F@h console client for mac
Yurt
hide it X

haha good times. you might think i'm joking, but i'm not. my last borg was a friends core2duo. i stumbled over in a drunken stupor during a party, loaded the necessary files, and passed out. for the [H]orde!!!

thats rightous right there :) We should start a "Drunken borgs" thread :)

and i knew you werent joking cuz that sounded too much like a good idea :)

ooh perfect timing too! yurt just showed that new drunken borg turned in its first work unit!! i should make a zip file that everyone just downloads to usb drives as a field borg kit. especially since many people already carry around usb drives with them.

aratech: if you live close to a Fry's they have dirt cheap package deals that make great folding boxes. i picked up 2 of the Pentium D 805 cpu+mobo deals and have 4 clients total going 24/7 for relatively cheap. throw them in a $20 case with psu and a 10gig drive and let it run and it'll boost your ppd and you will hit 200k in no time.

Can the 805 run Linux x64? SMP client for max PPD!

For the OP....yes, you'll make it. It is a fact that every contribution helps the cause and the team. I used to post things like this very often in my nightly stats update threads. Here's one for you.....if it were not for the people on the team with less than 200,000 points, the [H] would only have 284,359,336 points and we would be in 3rd place. Those below 200,000 points total 145,706,956 for the team. Awesome.

Yes and it would probably be around 500 or more PPD.

Just remember, everyone that is over 200k points were below that amount at one time. I remember getting to 6 digits was a bit thing. I'm still on 6 digits but I'm edging up to 500k.The past year has not been the best for folding for me as I've lost several Ghz. However, I've manged to make it up and more with a C2D system. The Linux SMP client is nice as I'm getting about 1500PPD on it with the system in my sig. Well, I would be getting that except that I still dual boot XP for games and a couple other things. Luckily, that's usually just a couple to a few hours a night.

I've dropped two SMP client WUs for over 1100 points today plus I'm dropping almost 1100 points on 2 WUs that were sitting on my XP clients. Mix that with the WU my work machine dropped in the morning and I'm looking at the most points I've had in one day before. I just need to find a way to get folding back on my friend's rig. Especially since he's using my old mobile XP and 512 meg of RAM of mine. He owes me especially since he hasn't paid me for it yet. That will get me another 150-200 PPD. It all adds up in the long run. It just happens that C2D adds it up faster.

I folded for almost 2.5 years at home on 2 single core machines 1.6-2.2ghz each and that got me to about 150K. In late Oct I built 4 very cheap (<$300ea) dual core machines running SMP Linux and my production went up 15 fold. You'll get there one way or another. You just need patients and maybe borg some systems.

alaskan, what distro of linux you using? and does SMP work on PEntium D's since i don't think they have virtualization?

You only need virtualization if you plan on using VMware in Windows to run a Linux VM. Linux straight up on the Pentium D will run the SMP client. I'm using Suse 10.1 on two machines and VMware on my two windows boxes running Suse 10.1 in the VM.

then i got 2 machines that i need to convert to linux. last time i worked with any linux was high school atleast 4 years ago. whats an easy linux distro i can use for just the SMP client?

4doors GTZ, your the only one on my attack list that i don't have an overtake date on  but its good i have a goal now!

my single C2D has almost doubled my PPD. I built that in December. Can you tell:

Nice ramp up

<giggles> someone noticed :)

Major changes recently:

Donated an Opty 165 to my father (he hasnt got it up and running yet, as soon he does BORG)
Built a qx6700 for myself as a replacement for the above
Finally got my p4 d805 running as a 2.5TB fileserver
Replaced my 4 year old p4 2.4 laptop with a new Dell M2010 (T7600 2x2.33)

Otherwise I have older machines:
P3 866
P3 1.13
Via M2 10000 (1.0Ghz)
P4 1.8
P4 2.53
P4 3.4

You made me take a look back in my rear view mirror there for a second, looked all the way back to the 10k point people, so far so good. No threats. So far the team has 35 people I'm not out producing, aprox 280 days to hit page 1.

i have 39 people i'm not out producing and i really noticed your ramp up. i'm converting a Pentium D system over to linux SMP client but still can't beat that qx6700 you got there. i don't think i'm much of a threat for you but i'm gonna be vying for an overtake date no matter how far out it is!

I just wanted to announce that it is you guys' fault that I just ordered myself a C2D, memory and a mobo! Shame on you!

ps.: soon there may be quite a few parts in the Folding FS forum.

What kinda parts you letting go of? my bank account is totally against folding but i love it. i too picked up the C2D and am looking for a second now but i can always add a decent box to my farm! let me know when you sell your stuff off (AMD isn't allowed in the house though).

I will let you know when I have my stuff set up. Probably an SC420 (Celery 2.5) and a A64 3000+, my x1900XTX

the 1900 would make a great folding card. problem is i already have a x1900gt on my main rig folding but i don't have any other PCI-E capable motherboards. i would love to throw a P4 in with an x1900 or x1950 as a dedicated GPU folder but too many costs to set it up.

Peer pressure man, all the cool kids are doing it.
Glad to be a cattle prod and get you folding more :)

Peer pressure!! buy connundrum1 another C2d machine! actually i'm waiting for my kill-a-watt first before adding any boxen to see how much the farm so far is costing my parents per month. they like the folding program as long as it doesn't cost them too much. This just means i should borg more, free power!

Free power is always nice. I'd put all my machines in my rental unit (utils included with condo fees) But I dont trust my renters sitting on $10k of my computers, plus they're an old couple and like the place warm, I mean the thermostat is set at 26c all year.
