Hey guys,

I'm trying to fix a computer for a friend. He bought a very decent computer for a low price. His computer is an nForce 570 motherboard (not sure of the processor), 2x 1gb PC4200 Memory, 2x GeForce 7300GT Video cards in SLI, 1 CDRom, and 1 SATA Drive. His power supply was a 650Watt power supply, however that crapped out on me.

I tested this by connecting a green and a black wire using a paperclip and was completely unable to get power. I also verified this method on my power supply which worked. In any case, I wanted to save on the price, and a friend of mine said 500w should be sufficient for him...

Just making sure, would you agree?

It doesn't matter too much much about wattage. How much and where amps are being delivered and how efficient the power supply is what matters most these days. Here's a great article about power supplies:
http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1036

Also, With that said, a 500W power supply should be plenty. I recommend this power supply if you need a new one:
XCLIO Goodpower 500W PSU - $50

Also, what kind of power supply does your friend have? Like what brand? Also, see if the power supply is still under warranty.

Oh and two 7300GT in SLI is not a good buy. SLI does not mean you get twice the power of a single card. I hope your friend wasn't planning on gaming if he got 7300GTs.

Danny, can you explain why they wouldn't be a good buy? I know it's OT from this subject, but I'm curious to know. I don't know what he intended to do when he bought the computer, I know he didn't purchase it from me, I'm just the one troubleshooting it. I can't imagine why running those two cards would be BAD for gaming.

Also, his old power supply was a Chieftech, however I didn't check it's warranty status... Stupid me. But he's cool with the purchase anyways, and frankly I think he'll like the new one. I bought a rosewill 500mhz for $50 I believe.

Well those 7300GT cards are pretty damn weak when it comes to gaming. 'The cheapest 7300GT I could find on newegg.com was $70. The cheapest 7600GT I could find on newegg.com was $96. Two 7300GT in SLI offer roughly comparable performance to a 7600GT but buying two 7300GT for SLI will cost you $140 from newegg.com. The 7600GT is only $96 and is barely behind 7300GTs in SLI in terms of performance. For $140, if your friend had bought the 7300GT new, he could've gotten an X1950GT for $135 that would've beat those 7300GT SLI by quite a large margin.

So as you can see, in terms of price and performance value, two 7300GTs aren't that great of a choice. Here's an article that goes more in depth about what I'm talking about: http://www.techspot.com/review/6-geforce_7300gt_sli_performance

And I did not say it would be bad for gaming, I just said it wasn't a good buy. And I had thought that two 7300GT in SLI offered less performance than a 7600GT. Thats why I said "I hope your friend wasn't planning on gaming." If you read the article, you can see that I was wrong about the performance of 7300GT in SLI. BUT I still say it wasn't a good buy considering a 7600GT is considerably less than two 7300GT in SLI and is only behind 7300GT SLI by 2-4 FPS. Hopefully whoever sold your friend the PC gave him a huge discount on those cards.

Oh and I hope you meant watts instead of Mhz for that power supply.

Yes I definitely meant Watts.... it was a long day yesterday and since I work on computers all day anyways I have MHz on the brain!
