I have an asus router that does ac1750. I'm trying to find a good usb wifi adapter for my pc. What would be the real world max I can expect? My best result has been a laptop with a socketed intel 9560 that got 50MB/s to my NAS over SMBv3, which is all I really care about accessing.

Because USB is just unreliable and trashy to use for wireless cards. Go PCI-E no question.

yeah, also has BT 5.0.

If you don't want to wait on the card from China you can build it yourself, the 9260 is only $17 alone on amazon.

I would recommend a proper external antenna just because when you are looking for high throughput placement can be key.

Inuse this model with decent luck. Your old adapter was getting 50MB/s that's not bad over wireless. Asus usb-ac68 dual band ac-1900 with a USB 3.0 extension cable to place it where I need it.
