I will try giving the short version of all the events here...

ON my old system:
Athlon Xp 2000+
Kt-Dragon Lite Motherboard
1.3 gigs pc 2700
enermax 350watt psu

Ok, problem started when i tried adding more ram. Apparantly the ram stick was bad, it screwed up the 1 gig stick and the computer would only boot with the 256 stick, that is after numerous cmos flashing.. Although the system would boot.. It was extremely unstable. It would crash when i was just browsing the internet.. and almost always when running any 3d Mark test.. If i got through 1 test, I was lucky. I took out everything but the basics that the computer needed to run, all PCI cards and such.. I also swapped out video cards... and put in a new stick of ram.. didnt fix it.

SO after all that, i decided to buy a new computer:
Athlon 64 3000
MSI neo-fsr mobo
Radeon 9800 pro
Used the same power supply from my old computer
used the new ram that i tried in my old computer
same cd drive
same mouse and keyboard
same hard drives

Well.. i put my new stuff together... SAME PROBLEM... just not as bad was actually able to complete a 3d mark 2001 benchmark. This was only AFTER i removed the main hard drive and reinstalled windows on my secondary drive. It has been more stable since i reinstalled, because i tihnk my old hard drive was shot.. getting errors all over the place.

The new case i got came with a new PSU, i hooked it up to my old system to see if the PSU was the problem, nope... didnt fix it.

So, obviously.. I am pretty worried about this problem. Its like I have ruled out every option of what it could be.. beleive it or not.. I am using a different keyboard and mouse to see if thats it.. :( I am desperate..

Sorry if my explanation is hard to follow, might not have come out how I wanted it to, but you get the jist.

Please.. and ideas or comments that may help me here..

Thanks

Did you make sure to buy compatable ram? Some of the cheaper stuff doesnt seem to fly real well in certain mobos.

have you tryed your new stick in your old mobo?

if im understanding right, you bought a new stick of ram for your old pc, stuck it in (it was a 256 meg stick?), fired it up, and now the old 1 gig stick wont work?

Easiest thing i can think of, is take it to a local pc shop, ask them nicely to test it for you, they may charge like 5 bucks, and then you should have your answer.

By the way, some ram doesnt play nice with eachother, doesnt happen all that often, but sometimes it does.

There could be a billion things i can think of that would cause that.

But it is causing it in BOTH systems... Actually, the ram that screwed everything up was not a new stick. It was one i got from a friend. I then got 1 stick of Samsung pc3200 512.. its in my new system now.

Man, this really sucks.

Well if its causing it in both systems, but used to work then it sounds like the ram is bad.

blame it on fedex.... sorry, that was unconstructive.

its obviously something thats constant btw the two systems... '

same ps
same ram
same cd drive
same mouse and keyboard
same hard drives

scratch off mouse and keyboard, obviously thats not it. so, try unplugging all cd drives and test, if thats not it, try to swap ram with something else, if thats not it, keep going down the list. process of elimination.

The ram i put in my old system was perfectly fine. Yet it didnt fix the problem of things crashing. It wasnt paired with another stick, so I can only think its fine.

What are the chances that all my new stuff is screwed over.

Im still kinda confused on the problem heh. But to rule out the ram fire up memtest for a night and see what happens.

if it is exhibiting the exact same problems, probably extremely low. you need to find a friend that is willing to let you swap parts until you can isolate the problem, cause really, anything from that above list can cause issues.

Here is my problem in a nutshell:

Both my new and old system shut down and are very unstable when running games.. or even doing basic desktop stuff.

I have no idea what is causing it, i reinstalled windows on a sperate drive and everything.

What else do you have running on that circuit in your house? Anything that could be causing interference nearby? If 2 seperate pcs have the same problems id start looking elswhere. After of course youve positively determined that any of the old stuff is still good.

(metal shavings stuck in a pci slot could cause something like this, just to give an example of what kind of stupid things can be a culprit when hardware seems to check out ok. ) Thats just an example of stupid things.

One by one, use a pc you know has no issues and start swapping hardware. If everything checks out ok, make sure you arent mixing ram sticks or overclocking. Make sure your proc isnt overheating. The normal stuff. Also make sure to nullify drivers as a culprit for instability by using programs like mem test, or a fresh install of windows with no drivers installed running a cpu burn in program. Just some ideas.

Its not that I have 2 full systems though.. When i upgraded i used some stuff from my old system...

what did you use from your old system? that could point to your problem there

There is only one thing that is consistitant to both rigs.Actualy two.

One is the user and two they are getting power from the same wall outlet?

Do you have a good APC with line conditioning? Has any new shit been installed in your home that would cause stress to the house electrical system ,

Example a central vac. That would cause serous line noise and voltage anamaloies that would effect ram. Think about it and try an apc in line with software analysis and see what happens
