My pc has decided to stop working, it randomly shut down and it won't switch back on again.

When I try to boot it up it just switches on for less than a second then powers off again. If I switch the PSU off, after a few secs the mobo looses power, switch it back on again and try to power up the same thing just happens. After that, nothing happens until I switch off and on the PSU.

This happened once before, I took the pc apart, put it back together again and it worked, however I'd rather not go through rebuilding it again, everything is plugged in properly and I've no clue as to whats going on.

Stats are in my sig, any help is welcome.

What's the make and model of your PSU? Also, try unplugging everything from the PSU, and jump the green wire and one of the black wires on the large ATX connector, and see if it stays on or shuts off.

How do you mean jump them, just touch them together?

Problem is I can't tell which is which, all the wires are black

The PSU is an XCase Active Power 850W, it was a cheapy that came with the case but that doesn't it should break this quickly should it? I've only been using it since November.

Just connect them using a paper clip. And hit up this link to figure out which of those wires are the "green wire" and the "black wire":

It's a cheapy PSU that came with the case. No surprise that it only lasted a month or two. Just hope it hasn't fucked your RAM, mobo, video card, or hard drive yet or any sort of long-term damage.

If you jump it and it doesn't work, then it's definitely dead. And you'd be surprised at the sheer number of PSUs out there that are marketed as being significantly better than they actually are.

Ok, so, I've put a new power supply in and I'm still getting the same issue, so that rules the PSU out.

Which now leaves the Mobo and CPU as the suspects, I''m thinking the CPU right now as the mobo is getting power and when I unplug the auxhillary power for the CPU I still get the same reaction.

Any suggestions...

Get another motherboard to test with.

Also what new power supply did you get? And did you ever jump the older power supply?

Sadly I don't know any one with a mobo I can test on, I don't know anyone else who's into computer hardware, and yes, I jumped the previous PSU, It didn't work.

Maybe it broke and took something else with it?

Ok, so I'm thinking it killed the cpu as the mobo is getting power and however the cpu is not,

I know this because unplugging the auxhillary cpu power lead doesnt change anything, i still get the same problem.

I'll RMA the cpu, see how that goes...

That doesn't mean the CPU is the issue. In fact, I'd be very surprised if it was. There is a significantly greater chance that the issue is one of your other components; either the motherboard, memory, or video card.

Hmm, ok, well I'm going to RMA the cpu and the mobo, hopefully it'll sort out whatever's wrong.
