Wi-Fi Hacker Gets 18 Years in Prison

Yes. Don't you watch TV? Whenever someone hacks your wifi, your computer screen goes red and starts flashing "Intruder alert!".

Actually, I hear that's only an option if you install XP Anti-Virus 2011. ;)

18 years is 10 years too much. He didn't kill/seriously maim anyone, and his death threats (although disgusting) aren't completely out-of-line for such a high profile public figure. By this time, the president and VP have heard much much worse, i'm sure of it.

There is about 57 billion square miles of land on Earth... along with another 139 billion square miles of sea... I think at the moment you're getting quite ahead of yourself...

And how much of that is actually Livable space? Last time I checked there is no altantis in the middle of the ocean so that doesn't really count for beach front property!

As for the rest of your post I agree but look at the current mess we are in because of it, the current prison system is full. Half of the criminals that come out just go back in.

You do make a good point about people that are not guilty getting killed, but the current system is NOT WORKING!

WEP is the equivalent of setting your password to "password"

I have glass windows on my house that can easily be broken. What's your point? The fact is their was a system in place to deter unwanted access. It might not be as secure as something else but that's besides the point and does not matter.

Someone has been listening to John Oliver.
Actually I remember it from when it was first reported, over 11 years ago. The incident with Dr. Yvette Cloete's home being vandalize and threats made on her life do to an ignorant mob mentality thirsty for blood. This was also around the same time people were getting the shit beat out of them for having similar surnames of alleged child molesters.

I did however track down your "John Oliver" reference, who I initially confused with Jamie Oliver the British food guy that cries a lot.

from article said:
The man, a Medtronic computer technician, downloaded a Wi-Fi hacking program to tear into his neighbors WEP encryption.

WEP should be removed from all routers and WPA2 should be made the de facto encryption standard.

I'm pretty sure I've heard that it will be phased out starting next year. Heck, many 802.11n routers/aps automatically kick back to 54mbit max speeds if WEP or WPA w/ TKIP is used.

WEP is not a system to deter unwanted access. It can be broken in seconds. What's your point? The fact is that WEP is just a blip above nothing. It is completely insecure.

lol you still missed the point. You can't stop someone who is motivated and willing to hack into an wifi network. Even WPA can be cracked if one is patient enough.

It's like a lock on a door. The lock serves it's purpose to keep someone out. Just because a door has a strong or weak lock doesn't take away from the fact or function that the lock was meant to keep someone out.

Just like a house window could be broken in seconds.... The fact that I dont know how to break into wep counts for something no? I would need to actively search for a way to get around it kind of like picking a lock. That's besides the point though. Just because they were using wep is irrelevant.

Damn it takes me long to make a post. You stole my whatever.

but go in for child porn and you are dead in 3 sec.

They shouldn't live that long. Do you have any kids? I'd kill ANYONE on this planet for mine. IF this guy brought my son back into my yard and kissed him, well, the only trial would have been my insanity angle non guilty plea. I'd have beaten him to death with my bare hands. I wouldn't have stopped. I would have made certain he was dead. Think I'm an internet gansta? Guess again. He is a sick fuck that has abused children sometime in the past. I guarantee it. He didn't just decide to browse for kiddy porn. Children, no matter whose children, are the most precious, defenseless resource we have.

And a house could be bulldozed in seconds, what's your point? WEP is like putting your money in a public-facing safe, closing the safe door and not locking it.
Don't get too hung up on the WEP thing.

So I don't have to do anything to crack wep it's wide open? I click connect and bam im connected? No. You need "burglar" tools.

Did you SEE how slutty that wi-fi had been dressing? She was TOTALLY asking to get her WEP hacked.

I would make a comment about how someone may think that this is to harsh of a sentence. I would then suggest maybe putting yourself in that person's shoes and be accused and investigated on suspicion of child porn and death threats to the VP. But I know all I would get back is the "I would never let myself get hacked" or the "The guy should have known and turned off his router" backlash. Everything seems excessive until it happens to you.

Agreed. I want a few people here to visit a prison, and see what kind of people are in there.
You'll be more than thankful those people aren't on the streets, and the cost to house them is worth it.

You would need "burglar tools" to haul off the contents of an unlocked safe.

Just because you don't know how to access it doesn't mean a method isn't horribly, horribly insecure.
