Hacking into your neighbor's wireless router is never a good idea. Hacking into your neighbor's wireless router to make death threats to the Vice President will get you 18 years in prison. :eek:

Minnesota hacker Barry Ardolf was sentenced to an 18-year term in a federal prison this Tuesday. Ardolf had terrorized a neighboring family for two years through a carefully planned campaign involving a hijacked Wi-Fi network to harass, frame and embarrass the next-door neighbors in every facet of their lives.

Not that it excuses this douchebags actions, but still..seriously people. That said the journalist in typical shitty sensationalist fashion questions the punishment of this guy. Personally I think he got off light for what he did. The hacking bit was minor, but the child porn bit..well I have essentially zero tolerance for pedos.
 
Ardolf’s charges will tag him with lifetime-sex-offender registration requirements and after his release he’ll be supervised for 20 years. According to the Pioneer Press, he’ll also be restricted when working with computers by his parole officers.
 
So the family went as far as to hire a lawfirm instead of, I don't know, putting a fucking password on the WiFi? Really?...Realllly?

Someone should a letter to some inmates in prison letting them know about the pedo in their midst.
 
I think 15 years would be okay as well, but 18 is in the ballpark. He had a lot against him... and death threats to the President are generally not viewed as "OK", even if they aren't serious.

At the average inmate cost of $22,650 per year for 18 years there's another $407,700 in taxpayer money.

I'd be perfectly happy if the bailiff dragged him out back after sentencing and shot him with a few cent bullet. :D
 
Ardolf sounds like a severely derranged individual. They don't treat people like this well in Federal Prison.
 
Wow that guy has some problems....

It sounds like it all started with a huge mis-understanding (but access to pedo pics could mean otherwise).

Either way, I think the 18 years is called for. His actions went way beyond basic harassment... I mean threats to the VP... that is more then harrassment.

From the presented evidence, including that this was the SECOND time he's done something like this, this guy had a couple screws loose.

He made death threats to an elected official, wasted and will continue to waste a shit ton of tax payer money and nearly (completely) ruined another man's life. I think the 18 years is justified, even if he won't serve the entire term of his sentence.

I'm not defending this guy in the least bit, but perhaps he used the child porn to stir up knee-jerk emotional responses such as this. There are plenty of people on this planet that would go into a nonsensical blind witch hunt mode the moment someone even whispers the phrase "child porn". Makes it pretty easy for him to pin it on his neighbor when those looking in his direction only see red. Don't you think?

With that said, kissing some other person's kid like that probably deserves no less then a few bat swings to the face :eek:.
 
18 years is extremely exagerated....really....how many times I have to say it, 10+ years belongs to the killers only, for things that is threat but doesnt harm you, they need better result, 18 years is a lot of years of your life to be wasted.

Did you read the article and understand what he did to that other man and his family?
He almost ruined the other man's career and life. That would have been more than 18 years of a family's life ruined.
It's also not the first time he has gone off the deep end on someone. Read the article and try to comprehend what you are reading.

Please tell me why exactly you say that. DO you think it is acceptable in ANY WAY to have prisoners abused? Civilized justice means we dont allow those in our custody to be brutalized. GROW THE FUCK UP

I actually agree with him do you like having your taxes dollar being wasted keeping criminal scum bags alive in prison for 20+ years. It a waste of time and our money hang them all or shoot them.

They are waste of space which is limited on this planet.

That's exactly what he meant and suggestions like his in 2011 are vile. Committing a felony, no matter how heinous, does not mean one should be subject to physical and emotional abuse or torture, including rape.

Let's see, he threatened to kill the Vice President, blamed in on the family, distributed child porn, blamed it on the family, perpetrated identity theft on them, kissed their son innapropriately, and just in general acted like a fucking crazy.

If the comments are correct, apparently he turned down the prosecutor's plea of 2 years in prison. Great gamble there, alright!. "I'm not guilty for hacking my neighbor's wifi and harrassing them into obliviion! I'll fight the charges."

Other than "perpetrated identity theft" I actually do consider that stuff rather frivolous compared to rape and murder.

re: child pr0n - obviously not cool but anyone else notice how in the US its easier to get away with murder1 vs having child pr0n? And prison - goto prison for mowing down 30 people with an automatic weapon at a mall people will stay away from you but go in for child porn and you are dead in 3 sec.

There is about 57 billion square miles of land on Earth... along with another 139 billion square miles of sea... I think at the moment you're getting quite ahead of yourself...

Now in regards to the second point... I don't agree with either of you. It's short sighted...

If you want them to be a lesser burden on society, have them put in an equal amount of labor to reduce / eliminate the cost of their incarceration. I personally don't think a prison sentence should be a free ride. Rehabilitation is pretty damn pointless when the only thing you have to do all day is stab other people and do drugs all day.

I'll never understand why people have zero qualms about performing something that can (literally) not be taken back. If you were to kill even 1 innocent person in the process of you vision of "justice", then it's a total failure.

There's a reason we keep people alive for 10 - 20 years before we put them down... :rolleyes:. Thankfully others before you were not quite so short sighted when that reason came to fruition...

Although this guy is pathetic too and should be shot (agree with posters below). I understand the government does it since prison/jail/incarceration is a for profit business but WTF, let's get rid of the wasted resources and space and spend the money elsewhere.

I would make a comment about how someone may think that this is to harsh of a sentence. I would then suggest maybe putting yourself in that person's shoes and be accused and investigated on suspicion of child porn and death threats to the VP. But I know all I would get back is the "I would never let myself get hacked" or the "The guy should have known and turned off his router" backlash. Everything seems excessive until it happens to you.
