Why Nintendo?

as I mentioned the 32x like on page 2, it was pretty lame. I had Sonic & Knuckles, which was great since I was a sonic nut, but only when the 32x worked...which was rarely. Oh, and how sega had the worst customer service IMO back when the 32x was released.

Just because Nintendo took existing tech and formed it into an extremely fun package doesn't make it any less innovative. And doing something right the first time, when it has been done wrong so many times before, makes you successfull.

You have to be $hittin me right? You are complaining that a full motion sensing remote isn't innovative, yet the fact that a console can be oriented vertically is????

The fact that you are from the UK means that you haven't even played a Nintendo Wii...so you are basing your comments on released videos and reviews. I would like to see your comments once you had a chance to spend sometime with one, that is if you are open minded enough to enjoy something that you have spent a good bit of time talking down about.

I'm sure he wouldn't like the wii though... people are just haters man lol..

Sonic and knuckles didn't need the 32x to my recolection. However it did have its own "lock on" technolgy that let you run sonic 2 and 3 with knuckles.

Sega Genesis sold about 48 million, SNES 49 milllion. Last time they had a lead within a respective generation for a home console.

The Sega Genesis sold around 35 million units. Just wanted to clear that up first.

I wouldn't exactly say that americans have a love affair with Nintendo. They clearly preferred the PlayStation to the N64, and the Gamecube finished last in America.

Some people get defensive when this is brought up, but Nintendo's consoles do indeed have an "auro of kidines,". Back during the time of the NES, most gamers were in fact kids, and Nintendo tried to cater to this as much as possible. It tried to do it again with the SNES, but Sega did something different and tried to target an older demographic, mainly males in their 20's, and was able to cut into Nintendo's market share and almost pull off the victory.

Every Nintendo console has sold less than its predecessor.....

NES - 60 million
SNES - 49 million
N64 - 32 Million
Gamecube - 23 million

.....and the "kiddie factor" is to blame for this.

The average gamer is now a male in his 20's, not a ten-year-old. The N64 and GC did rather poorly(even though I wouldn't call them complete failures) because Nintendo had them compete directly with the PS1, Saturn(which outsold the N64 in Japan), PS2, and Xbox, and they didn't have the means to do so. Nintendo relied heavily on its first party flagship franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, & company, but gamers had grown up, so to speak, and wanted games with more mature themes and more complexity rather than games where you ran around with a plumber smashing bricks and collecting fruit and coins all day long. These titles are still considered to be a lot of fun, but they just aren't as appealing to the demographic that Nintendo targeted.

What Nintendo is trying to do now is target a different audience and market the Wii as more of a secondary system rather than compete directly with the PS3 and 360, which is a good idea, but it is risky at the same time. The Wii will have to have a steady stream of titles that utilize the Wiimote, and if that doesn't happen and/or the titles get too tedious and redundant by forcing the Wiimote, then Nintendo could be in serious trouble. Not to mention that even though a lot of people like the idea of the Wiimote, a lot of people think it's rather stupid.

I used it back in the day when my sister didn't want to hear the Sonic music anymore, and I use it now since I lost the audio cable. I just plug in some speakers and it works fine :)

Read the "Games" section halfway down.

Almost all of the Playstation 2's games are El Stinko. The PlayStation brand's strength has led to strong third-party support for the system, but Sony is too stupid to make cool games.

heheh

If thats concrete then Nintendo is in bigger trouble than i thought in the home console market, i also think lack of media capabilities and the last 2 nintendo consoles have been too dificult to aquire pirate games is a cause of this in the home sector, just my opinion

The Gamecube lacked a traditional Mario platformer and a traditional Kirby platformer.

Had it had both, the Gamecube would have probably been able to recapture the market share of the N64.

Perhaps the age of the consoles contributes to the overall sales figures as well?

EXACTLY! when i was looking at which console to get this round i had a long hard thought about if i wanted to play mario and zelda all over again. i decided that the games avaialble on the 360 seemed more appealing to me. 5 years ago i would have gone with nintendo no questions asked. but now im 20 years old, i want some blood and guts not coins and blocks.

Remember in spite of declining sales, Nintendo has still been keeping up a decent profit, even in its console division, so it hasn't been in any danger of fading away. I think that part of the problem with the GC is that it didn't have as strong a lineup of so-called 'killer apps', even from their core brands. I think this is definitely changing right from the get-go as we head into Wii. Zelda makes an excellent launch title (and I imagine that considering this is almost a GC holdover, there'll be another to come at least), and down the line are solid games from their core properties. Add in what looks to be solid 3rd party support and I think Wii is set out to do pretty well.

For me, Wii will be the first console that I've had any interest in since the 64, though I did buy an XBox, it didn't see much use. I thought I was on my way out of gaming altogether, but the Wii is at just the right place to make me want to get back in. I think that says something about what Nintendo might accomplish.

... but does anybody know when the Wii is going to restock? I'm still in Taiwan and was wondering if I could get a Wii during this Thanksgiving weekend.

I guess I am just a little jaded..

I never once, not once, was impressed with the Xbox (own), PS2(sold mine), or Gamecubes (own) graphics. Not once. I have also not been impressed with either the Xbox360 (own), Playstation3 (not yet), and Wii (own) graphical capabilities. It is nothing against any of the consoles, it's just that if I am looking for games with incredible graphics I use my PC.

And for the most part, none of the afforementioned consoles can match my PC...sure they all look good, some even look great, but so what..I can do the same thing or more with my PC. So for me it has always just boiled down to what games are fun to play, and whatever console they are on that's what I have purchased. I could name each game I bought each console for, I never really bought a console based on its own merits (unitl the Wii). Who cares what the console is capable in hardware, if the software sucks, why on Gods green earth would you buy it. You don't go buy a Ferrari, when the only roads to drive on are either dirt or .5 miles long. But what if someone came along and said who the hell needs a steering wheel, here is something new. That is what the Wii did, and I have been more than happy with the controls.

The Wii presented a new and inviting (and nex-gen) way to play games. So the graphics are inferior to all the other nex-gen consoles, so what, it isn't just about the graphics. And by the way the Wii is selling, people don't seem to be overly concerned. When Nintendo states its not just what's "next" it's whats absolutely new, I take that to mean that not only is its next-gen, but we also brought something new to the table. Obviously Sony thought enough of motion control to try to include some level of it in the PS3. Too bad the implentation is so last-gen when compared to the Wii-Mote.

It just boils down to the games, I bought each of the above systems for specific games, and not becuase the games looked graphically amazing, but because the games looked fun or peaked my interest. I have never bought a game just because it looked good, if it was graphically stunning then great, but that's just value added in my book. When Sony is able to provide some good games I will consider a PS3.

Definitely agree.

When it comes to console gaming, a "Gimmick" is something that's added to the system that doesn't affect gameplay or improve the game experience.

Some examples:

UMD Movies
MP3 Playback (Exception: when used for custom soundtracks in games)
Video file playback (EVER)
DVD/HD-DVD/Bluray playback
Cheap, minor technologies played up for their buzzword status (Bluetooth)
Gigabit ethernet (find me a provider who can even bring you a 10Mb connection for a good price, let alone 100Mb, to say nothing of Gb)

Your examples also are lame. NES was NOT in competition with Genesis, the SNES was--and it was the Genny's equal, with *software* ultimately beating out Sega (though not by much!).

Game consoles are about playing *games*, not horseshit like movie playback and Linux fiddling.

Very cleverly twisted the gimmick situation around their!! Although some of what you stated is very true and doesnt go towards gaming i disagree calling them Gimmicks.
Weve already discussed all this bit off topic but ill repeat again. you can say the same about mobile phones/pcs/ipods etc, a lot of people dont want to live in the eighties and have a massive stack of gadtgets under and around their tv, or carry a phone along with a camera along with a walkman. It could be a reason Nintendos home console sales have declined. I for one just want a couple of units max under my TV, itll probably be a ps3 and a wii, Bluray playbeack is fantastic on the ps3, thats me sorted money saved for the high def movie playback era,
As for bluetooth ill have one PS3 linked to my living room tv,my dining room tv, my office and my bedroom, so the ps3 cotorller will work in both rooms without having to move the console (time money and effort saved), bluetooth noise cancelling headphone will work anywhere in the house, send photos from my phone, and gigabit ethernet isnt just for broadband call it a gimmick for now but for futureproofing its good for streaming.

You can get 16mb in the UK for £10per month, works out about $19, 24mb for £24p/m. That's pocket change....I hear 100mb speeds are being tested in London at present so that will be rolled out within the year I'd guess and the price wouldn't be as high as most ppl imagine.....

So your problem is that you have self-esteem issues with your maturity, and therefore must play games with sex, blood, and gore, in order to feel like an adult? Sorry, but that is just plain ludicrous to decide your console purchase off of something like that. Even if someone were watching you play your games constantly, who cares, they couldn't give a crud whether it is OOOH BLOODY SPLATTER SPLATTER SPLASH WOW BLOOD POOLS ON THE FLOOR or not. There are, of course, "mature" games that will be on the Wii... had you tried Zelda, you'd realize that after the first hour, it actually IS a mature game that younger players won't understand a scrap of the plot-line of. By mature, I don't mean that it has tons of blood and gore, I mean that it has a deep and meaningful story to it... ya'know, sort of like a good book ;).

Same here, the last major console I was interested in was the Nintendo 64... I bought an Xbox which basically got no use as if I wanted graphics and online play I just used my PC anyway. I wasn't even considering a console ever again until I saw the Revolution (since renamed the Wii). Really, who wants the same old stuff with shinier water reflections when you're paying $600 for it? One person I showed my Wii to actually asked whether it was more expensive than a PlayStation 3, as they were shocked at how good the motion sensing was and how fun the games were. Other than PC games, which I have been playing less and less over time of, I too thought I was out of gaming until this console. They've managed to breathe new life into gaming with a fresh way to play, rather than the same old variations of button combinations.

$600? its not just Nintendo and Sony in this war dont forget the 360 at $300 or whatever it costs over there. Your point is taken but you must admit theres a lot of people out there that love their Fifa/NHL/Basketball/Racing/RPG/RTS/flight sims. Games most of which the only way forward is to make the graphics/animation etc more realistic, take a look at Need For Speed Carbon on the pc, it bombed mainly because the graphics werent any better. Its great Nintendo is trying something different, they wilcreate their own seperate market hopefully and leave Sony and M$ to it unless they of course bring out a Wiimote equivalent which would make things very difficult for Nintendo. Gears of War has already sold over one million units already, why? Better Graphics, amazing sound and excellent Gameplay (the main factor being the graphics)

games, and arthritis in my thumbs :D

i consider a mouse to be motion sensing, and a kb and mouse great yet difficult at first for fps.

nintendo brought a new control scheme that may offer superior precision to that.
if it succeeds it will not be a gimick. snes had the first shoulder buttons, n64 had the first analog thumbstick and trigger and rumble pack.
if any maker has earned the right to try new control schemes, it is nintendo.

ive seen graphics get better for 20 years. and alot of the games are the same except prettier. ie boring - i could just watch a movie or play games on my graphically superior pc.

wii will likely have fewer titles and more gameplay quality, which makes my life simpler :)

Sigh... you know of a free tennis court that's close to you that you can actually play other people with?

not everyone has these advantages...

Wii wins for innovation, looks of the product, both size and asthetic value, and being able to bring a new way to play to the market. hell, i'll bet they'll get tons of awards when all the fatboys start losing weight from tennis and boxing...

meanwhile, the ps3 !!!!!!s will enjoy their overly sweaty boxers fighting eachother and just button mashing... heh.. another thing the wiimote brings to the table, i suppose you cannot button mash, but you can wave your wiimote around like an idiot. heh

I'd also like to add that i'd play an FPS on the wii anyday over a regular controller.. this is great.

so i dont really know much about it.
