Why have RAM prices skyrocketed?

yup, ai.

So there is chatter of Memory prices going parabolic due to AI demand... It is already becoming apparent. I do plan on upgrading my main rig with a Black Friday Micro Center deal this year. Not a gamer so I do not have to have CUDIMMs, just good enough to upgrade platforms as I am a productivity user .. Windows 12 is coming soon, and I doubt my old 9900K is going to be on the list of legitimately supported hardware as 9th gen was the bare minimum for 11. Also, I do see that Micro Center is no longer bundling memory with MB/CPU combos, and if you want ram, it is already much more expensive then it was six months ago for the basic stuff they offered. I will retain the 12700k as a replacement for the 9900K that I will sell on Marketplace. I will probably just opt for a 265k / Z890 bundle.. Already can get that for $350 + tax.. thinking we may see $300 on BF.

Today, I picked up 64GB (2 sets of 2x16) of this ram for $80 total off of Marketplace. Seller was cool and even provided the original receipt (I asked) for warranty purposes in case I ever need it. Yeah, it is CL40 which is a little disappointing, but that is only a few % FPS if I was a gamer.. So honestly, not a bad deal, and much less then I paid for my current DDR4 / 64GB.

Anyone else going to front run the RAM price hikes before they become common knowledge?
pssst, over here ;)

Wow. Just price checked the ram kit I bought from MC back in July. It's more than doubled and out-of-stock.

Guess I timed that right.

Datacenters sucking it all up. The 64Gb I bought last month have gone up $180 already!

My 32GB G-Skill DDR 5 kit of 6000 Cl 30 is up over $124 over what I paid in 2023.

my ddr5 6000 cls36 micron went from 80$ Oct to now 215$.
ouch
micron ddr5 Pro

Wow, my DDR5 64GB 6000 CL30 that I bought in January went from $219 is up to $459 by a 3rd party seller on Amazon. Similar spec kits I see are selling at almost $550 on Amazon.

I am running 2 sets of 6000C26, they were retailing for 300CAD before tax, now they are at ~565 before tax.

Brutal time to be building.

Got a set of team 64gb 2x32 DDR5 for $170 a few months ago for a workstation build. It’s now $390. Fuck AI

Absolutely disgusting:

Literally paid $214.99 for this same kit back in July which wasn't even on sale or discounted.

Edit: That was the Intel kit that I almost accidently bought. Here's the kit I actually bought:

The same kit, as far as I'm concerned. I guess because AMD is so popular these days, we pay the AMD tax for AMD-specific things.

First it was GPU prices back in 2020-22 because of bitcoin. Then a couple of years ago it was PSU prices and availability, for reasons I still don't know. I couldn't find a reasonably priced PSU anywhere. Now it's RAM.

Higher end mobo prices have also gone way up.

I'm getting sick of trying to build something without spending a fortune, and/or waiting on supply.

Almost makes me want to get a Mac.

If your day to day usage is streaming services, browsing, emails and subscription programs then there’s basically no reason to go Windows 11. It’s buggy as hell, is constantly trying to steal your data, sell you shit you don’t need, and usability is worse than Vista.

If/when MacOS decides to take gaming semi seriously then the jig is up.

Nuh uh.

Newegg.ca, and Amazon.ca.. I do not buy from 3rd parties when it comes to real moneys. Maybe for TIM, or a pad or something like that.

When I built my AM5 in 2023 with that Best Buy Starfield kit that give you a 7600x and B650 Gigabyte board plus the game for $289, I picked up a 32GB kit of Crucial DDR 5 Pro 5600 Cl 46 for $79.99 and later on I bought my G-Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB kit of 6000 Cl 30 for $117.69 from newegg, same kit is $269.99 = $152.30 price change.

I still have the Crucial DDR 5 Pro kit as backup or building another system using the 7600x again, I just need a cheap board when I have some extra money.

I'm looking for 2x 32 GB ECC unbuffered DDR5 for an AMD build for hopefully under $500 CAD.

I think I'm out of luck.

Newegg now lists the 64GB Corsair kit I paid $308 for six months ago for $559.

That's not a 3rd party price. It's Newegg.

I checked for my Lexar 6000C30 that I bought from Amazon.ca as my first kit(s) on AM5. I paid like 207 CAD for each set, now they are around 450CAD, but not for that model as they are gone. I think they were 7200C34.

Looks like everything on Amazon got bumped too.

it has. if its sold by amazon or the maker its not as bad as the 3rd parties though. i assumed thats what yours were...

I only buy main parts like that from Amazon, I very rarely, if ever deal with 3rd parties.. Thermalright being the main exception :D

On Newegg, I have never dealt with 3rd parties there.

Edit:

And the JBL Store and Logitech store haha..

Cheapest 32gb 6000 mhz CAS36 kit at my MC is $200 atm. $230 for a name brand I never heard of for a CAS30 kit.

Wow, the ram kit I got for my notebook for $140 (64gb (2x 32gb) ddr5-5600 sodimm pair) is now $385 on Amazon (shipped and sold by). Glad I got it while the getting was good!

Man wtf lol. Who the hell is going to pay $1k mod tier 64gb of ram. Looks like the Manufacturers and stores are getting on it before the scalpers are this time.
