Seems pointless to me, although Ive heard (but not positive) that Saphire really makes the BBATI cards and just boxes them differently. Seems like they could lose money by doing that... ala 3dfx.

I think have Ati have always made their own card. It was just recently when they started challenging nvidia in the accelerator market that they allowed other companies in on the pie.

Think is, if you are a company the size of ATi (I like the "i", damn it!)you are going to have the pick and place machines and PCB stencilling machines and so on, to make reference and R&D designs.

That equipment is not cheap (I know, my company bought a new pick and place machine a couple of weeks ago), and because modern fabbing equipment yields very good quality electronics, it makes sense to have your investment work more of the time to pay for itself (otherwise it just sits there in it's air-conned room doing nothing).

That's my take on it - the BBATi cards are an exercise in economy.

Some people think that buying from the manufacturer (original 'maker') means that it's guaranteed to have been done right. Also, the warranty is good, you can count on a borked card being replaced... and the retail box is cool. And yes, sapphire OEMs many, if not all ATi brand cards (i like the 'i' too). I've actually heard that power color OEMed for them too, but i'm not sure about that one...

Well companies make ATi (i!) cards to make money

ATi like making money and people will buy from them just because they seam more official then those other "bootlegged" cards ;)

:) simple

I'm pretty sure that the only one that makes BBATi is Saphire. PowerColor in my opinion is a crappy brand. Back in the 9700-pro days they were making semi-pro cards and using confusing names on them so people thought they were buying a pro when in fact the memory was a grade to low and wasn't even able to overclock to stock pro speeds.

exactly why i dont want to believe it ;D
I've heard people with great experiences with powercolor cards, but if they do shoddy stuff like that, i prefer not to buy from them.
