I was reading a review on anandtech today and it mentioned how much higher the overclocks were on many Socket 754 motherboards when using IDE as compared to SATA drives. I was just curious why this is?
A lot of the motherboard manufacturers haven't got a completely working lock on the sata, so when you get to a certain point the lock stops working and you run the sata out of spec (ie if you are lucky your won't be able to run stable, if you are unlucky you get data corruption).
i've got a MAX3 too and am on the verge of installing a SATA drive, maybe if osomeone moved this over to the data storage section we'd get more help? I wanna keep my OC.
Often times the problem lies with extra SATA ports which are in controll of an on-board controller added by the manufacturer (like those from Promise, etc.) and which wasn't part of the mobo's core chipset. That's why on some mobos if you use the main SATA ports (by the AGP slot I believe) it'll work fine but with the others it'll crap out. All depends on the mobo's specific design I guess.
Yeah I know what IRQ's are, but I don't understand what that has to do with overclocking. Its just an inturrupt request, in other words its "Hey, I want your attention". How would sharing IRQ's limit your overclock?
Maybe the lock just isolates the CPU freq from everything else.
i thought that SATA goes through the PCI bus just like current IDE drives do. That is where my confusion stemmed from originally. If the motherboard has a working PCI lock than I would not think the type of hard drive will affect the overclock. Also the article mentioned that if you use the other two SATA headers on the nvidia chipset (3 and 4) that the overclocking limit seems to go away.
