Why buy a 360?

Both systems have their ups and downs- I own both of them.

I rarely use my 360 because of the ridiculous amount of noise it makes. I actually just bought 10 foot cables so I can put it outside my room in preparation for Halo 3.

I use my Playstation 3 much more often, but almost entirely to watch movies, due to there being so few good games. But at least its about 20 times quieter than the 360.

Is that an older 360? I heard an Elite the other day and it wasnt very loud at all.

Either way... on to my story. I was going to post a new thread but there's already a nice related argument brewing here.

I am facing a similar problem right now. I have a Westinghouse 37" and a very good PC (8800gtx/3.2ghz C2D, 4gb), but since I built it ~8 months ago PC gaming has been fairly stagnant. Quake Wars, TF2, Crysis, and UT3 will all be out in the next few months thankfully and PC gaming will pick up again, but I wonder if I am missing out without a "next-gen" console.

I am looking to buy an elite (I need the rca/s-vid dongle to output sound to my speakers if using HDMI). This would cost me another $50 on top of the premium w/hdmi's $350 price tagso I may as well pay an extra $50 and get the elite (that's my reasoning at least, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). I have read that HDMI looks/performs better than component/vga on Westinghouse HDTVs. If this is 100% true or not I honestly have no idea.

I really don't need media center functionality because my powerful PC is hooked up directly to the 37" HDTV. So blueray/hd-dvd aren't very important to me. I'll end up buying blueray/hd-dvd drives for my media center PC in the future if these formats stick around.

As for games, I would definitely keep my FPS on the PC (mouse/kb kills a controller) except mabye in the case of Halo 3. Although, I have seen videos on youtube of the mouse/kb addon for the 360 but it seems to have some issues and costs over $100 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=LeQ_o3a2AsM). The PC is definitely the best platform for FPS/RTS (and arguably MMORPG), but the rest of the spectrum is usually better served from a couch or bed w/a controller.

What do you guys think?

The problem is the PS3... it seems like no one really likes it and the games seem to be the issue. The multiplatform seem to be ports of the 360 games (ex: madden running at 30fps vs 60fps on 360). I hope that they pick up in the future and start pumping them out, but it's hard to spend $500 on a console with few games you would want.

I absolutely abhor fanboys of any type and it's hard to sift through all the BS floating around in the console wars.

Nope, its an elite, I bought it the day they were released. The fan is bearable when I'm not playing any games, but as soon as the disc spins up, it stays spinning, very loudly.

A while back, I checked the drive, and it was the one they used in the original 360. I'll probably end up selling the elite and buying a used 360 that's guaranteed to be more quiet.

Ah damn... it sounds like you got a lemon. Did they really use the old drive in the first Elites? I suppose the one I heard was the newer quieter drive (that is also in the HDMI equipped premiums).

That sucks... may as well sell the elite on ebay and pick up one of the new premiums.

It was shown on the 360, listed as being available for the ps3-360-PC, and then mysteriously is listed as the ps3 being the only platform. All questions about the other versions are met with no comments. It's pretty obvious that it'll just be a matter of time...kind of like when eternal sonata was 360 exclusive and kept popping up all over as a timed exclusive.

I dunno why haze keeps getting mentioned as a killer app type game anyway. Might as well mention crappy looking fps games like blacksite area 51. Army of 2 looks ten times better than haze and some of the other uninspiring looking drivel.

Why the messing around with asking our opinions, when from the get-go you listed your opinion in favor of the PS3, and then basically asked everybody who likes the 360 to try to change your mind?

It also sounds like you get a much better deal over there than we do in the states on the PS3. Three games included is quite a value, but all you did was list MSRP on all the comparison accessories, when anybody who doesn't like throwing money away would look for used items or deals on other sites. I've never paid full price for any accessory or game on any system I've owned since the PS2.

My opinion is that both systems are kick-ass. However, for my purposes, the PS3 would kick ass as a low cost Blu Ray player for me to abuse my Netflix membership with because FF13 isn't out, nor is MGS4, and neither will be for a while. I can't justify my purchase of one right now for only Warhawk, which is all that grabs me currently, while I can't seem to not find something I want to play on my 360. And the stuff in-between is multi-platform.

It is all subjective, which is why this thread seems to have gone on too long especially considering you can't seem to find any real value in anyones opinion about the 360, and that's fine, I'm a big fan of "to each his own" but really it sounds like you know what you want.
 
The obvious choice is to buy both if it's feasable. Otherwise, continue your research and good luck finding unbiased responses in most forums :)

Myself, I have two ps3's , and am extemely happy. The lack of games issue is well on it's way to being over, by the holidays there will be too many choices of what to play/purchase, in my opinion. And it will always be a good DVD/BR player.Important if you don't want to buy, or own a HD/upscaling player, and have home theater.

I've came close, a handful of times, to buy a 360, but it never happened, and I wont say it's a piece of shit just because I choose not to own one. Long live freedom of choice.
 
Wifi is SO IMPORTANT for a gaming maching, especially when you want to carry around the big screen ya play it on.

I think you misunderstood. I didn't have a pre-determined idea, I was looking for something that might show me why so many people were getting a 360, which we've achieved. I've also said that i'm going to be getting a 360 as a consequence of this thread.

You buy a 360 to play games, thats why. And as a gaming machine, its does that very well, with a library to back it. If you want the accessories, then its up to you. Your price comparison is a little off and biased, but it doesnt matter, right? If you can afford it and plannin on getting it anyways, then why complain? If you see it isnt worth it, then be happy with the ps3.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but the lower 360 lines have been updated with an HDMI port so it is not necessary to purchase an Elite.

I agree that the wireless adapter for the 360 is rediculously overpriced.

HD movie media options like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are only valid concerns if you actually intend to use your game system to play such. Many are choosing to not make that decision yet. With the PS3, you get it and it is part of the price, with the 360, it is an addon that can be purchased at your leisure. So, the utility of these options varies with the consumer. I'm waiting for the format war to be over before I choose.

I have both and I consider the 360 to be a more polished game system. XBL, even though you have to pay for multiplayer, is vastly superior to PSN. The user interface is also better designed and, in general, the 360 versions get more additional downloadable content.

Now, if I did wanted to adopt Blu-Ray for movies, which I have not even though I have a PS3, I would consider the PS3 to be a greater value than I currently do. I'm even irritated now that they announced the rumble controllers the PS3. I'll end up buying one because I want to play some old PS2 games with rumble, though. The best feature the PS3 has, at least to me, is that it can upscale PS2 games. Right now, though, I am underwelmed overall.

The 360 just has more games that I want to play. The games that I want to play for the PS3 is a much shorter list.

I actually read all of your posts, before i decided to respond. To sum it up; you stated that you are planning on getting a 360, you own a ps3, you wonder why getting a 360 is worth the price of admission, when tallying everything together, you stated that it costs more than the ps3, right? Also you said that you can afford to have both, right? So why are you even asking about getting one .
As i stated, if youre buying it for gaming, then get the 360.
 
Because it's this generations "PS2" in that it has not only the most games available but also the largest variety. Also...the 360 games (first and 3rd) party seem to be of higher quality than the hordes of crap games that were released for the PS2 by developers wanting to make a quick buck.;)

X360 is not even close to dominating like the PS2 did last generation. At this point, it's only sold approximately half of what the PS2 accomplished in the equivalent time period since release.

The X360 is currently selling better than the PS3. But when you factor in the difference in price, it's not unexpected. Console buyers are extremely price sensitive. In the context of the PS2, both next gen systems are selling poorly.

The X360's larger, more diverse game library, comes almost exclusively from launching a year earlier. The huge advantage it's enjoying won't last forever. The disparity in depth between the two system's catalogs is peaking this year. It will only close in the future.

The "console war" has just begun. X360 barely outsold PS3 in their respective first years. It didn't really take off until year 2. Next year, several AAA console selling titles ship for PS3. Nobody expects X360 sales to drop off precipitously, but the PS3 will begin putting up much better numbers relative to the X360 in 2008 - After it's down to $400 and has several "must play" titles. A lot of people will buy the system to play games like MGS4, GT5, and FFXIII.

It's way too early to call the X360 the PS2 of the 7th generation. I doubt any console, even the Wii, will sell like the PS2. ;)
 
Look if you need convincing on whether to get a 360 or not then your not getting it for the right reasons.
 
Why do people like wally world keep posting this crap? Its like those dumb fucks who keep going to the linux forum and saying, "convince me to use linux" why do you keep wanting us to convince you to buy or use something. I guess people just lack brain power these days, since they don't seem to be able to make up their own mind, but have people "convince them". Also this wally came in here from the start not wanting a 360, he came here to argue how the ps3 is such a better value.

I think this thread should be locked for flame bait. All wally wanted to do was start a flame war how the 360 sucks and the ps3 is a much better value.

p.s. I don't own either system and couldn't give a rats ass about either of them.
 
Posting anything console specific in this section is generally not smart. I posted a thread about a PS3 firmware update, and it extended to 9 pages of hate...lol.


As far as your OP goes, the 360's great. But, I would wait for the revised versions to come out. I have a PS3, and a 360. I love them both. But i'm more of a PC Gamer, so I barely touch them. I really need a new TV first, b/c all my money went to a new computer.

Anyway, if you buy a 360 you won't regret it. Just keep it well ventilated. Although, i'm really excited for my Ps3, b/c there are a lot of exclusive, and great games coming out for it up until the end of this year alone, and a bunch of sweet ones coming out Q1, and Q2 of next year.

Honestly though, just find out for yourself. Try both. Research both, and see which you would prefer. Good luck. :cool:
 
Are you using it as a party console or not? If so why do you want the HD DVD drive and all the extras?

The best party console is the Wii. It has the best party games by far. Xbox 360 has more great games though then both the PS 3 and the Wii and it is cheaper then the PS 3 by far. However if you need bluray for sure the PS 3 is a good buy.
