Why are opterons supposed to be good?

Sorry but I am not that literate with computers but at sites like newegg I've seen the 3200+ venices and they seem to be good for overclocking and such and now these opterons come out and they have the same operating frequency but everyone is saying they're good. So now I'm questioning whether the venices are good anymore. The price difference is prolly another $70 for an opteron over a venice.

Thanks

Because they overclock to FX57 speeds and beyond for around 200 bucks......

They also have 1mb of L2 cache vs. the venice having 512kb of L2 and 4 HT links vs. 2.

No. That is more commonly referred to as a "blanket statement".

What he meant to say was that AMD uses a much more stringent testing procedure for its Opteron line. Since they are meant for use in servers, they are rigorously tested to ensure rock-solid stability under intense conditions. This is all at stock speeds, of course.

What does this equate to for the end-user? A higher overclock, of course! If a chip can run 24/7 under intense working conditions at a given speed, it is definitely going to have a large OC cap. That said, you might not get lucky. Many people have been reporting as much as a 66% overclock on air, but that's not everyone. Overclocking is all in the luck of the draw. But I think it's safe to say that the Opterons 14X series is guaranteed for at least a 600MHz overclock.

Thanks.
yes...

i am sure that people have even called zzf and can tell you what steppings they have in stock..

i would personally try to find a 144 because they are cheaper.. but prices are a little artifically high because of all the buzz on the internet about them.. and because they are hard to find...

also, to answer the original question.. opterons have a better ihs (integrated heat spreader).. i don't rememebr why its better though..

Personal experience note with dual core 165 Opty:

I'm running 2.55-2.6Ghz with stock voltage with 1mb cache per core on a $300 chip. Cheapest X2 with that is $500 4400+.

would the 4ht links benefit me in any way if I were to have only one opteron?
errr. come again? last i checked, the 1xx only had one ht link, 2xx has 2 and 8xx has 3 ;)

also, it's not as much the stricter testing prodecures than the fact that there are some steppings that normally get put in FX's that overclock really really well.
