Why Apps Really Hit iOS Before Android

What's the point when people are drunk on Apple cool-aid and refuse to see facts? It's like wasting time trying to explain that the Windows PC professional software and game ecosystem is much larger than Mac OS X because developers will always target the larger marketshare if they want to stay in business. Pure economics.

I'm not an app developer, but I'm working side-by-side with one on a project right now. He's developing the app for both Android and iOS, and has stated that iOS dev work is a lot more enjoyable, thanks to the consistency.

Our biggest problem right now? Bluetooth Low Energy. It Just Works on iOS. On Android, it's a crap shoot. Some phones handle 100 connections/second without blinking. Some can't handle 50. Some connect effortlessly with BLE devices, some can't keep a stable connection to save their lives. In fact, we're having to come up with some pretty creative solutions to make it work consistently.

That's great, except the economics appear to favor development on iOS. If they didn't, then no app would exist on iOS that isn't on Android.

Not when you look at facts.

Caustic is the best DAW on any mobile platform that started out on Android then was ported to iOS. When comparing review numbers since Apple doesn't publish download numbers the Android version has 24,038 reviews while iOS version only has 117 reviews (less than 1%). If the developers had relied on iOS first they'd be unemployed and broke.

Another example. EveryCircuit is the best electronics simulator on any mobile platform. 26,337 reviews on Android compared to 69 on iOS. Another company that would be BK if it had relied on iOS only.

iOS has such a small about 10% marketshare and with the rampant piracy due to every iOS version being jailbreakable from security vulnerability that it's a money losing proposition.

That's a pretty low-volume example. Clearly the most revenue in the app market is on the iOS side, which is why virtually everything comes on iOS first or exclusively.

I think it depends on the program ... games tend to do better on iOS than Android since iOS users are more willing to buy ... the Fallout Shelter game that released on iOS ahead of Android is rumored to have made 5 million+ in "in app purchases" ... not sure what their Android purchase numbers were like

Sure, but there are other DAWs that are more popular on IOS. I'm also not sure how not having a free d/l affects things for that app. It's also worth nothing that AFAIK, with IOS, if you want to reviews Version 1.x and then review version 1.y, that's only one review. I believe that Android's shop lets you have more than one review (but it's been a long time). I prefer Android's method

My gut says that Garageband sucks the life out of most other DAWs on IOS. Regardless, if Android was where the money was, that's where the development dollars would go. It appears for that DAW, they do much better on Android. Whether that's because it's a better implementation or there are better tools on iOS (or even that there are tools from desktop s/w companies that tie directly into the s/w on their PC/Mac), most things are on iOS.

The one place where I think Android kills is with Touchdown. Unless something has changed, the iOS version isn't nearly as good as the Android version.

Touchdown might seem ok on iOS because the app ecosystem is lacking. On Android it's just average compared to the competition like Nine and Mailwise which aren't available on iOS. Virtually every app category there's something much better on Android, started first on Android or is Android exclusive.

Economics on Android are favorable, if android users buy a lot of apps. My understanding is that iOS users buy a lot of apps. I don't know if that's true or not, but the bottom line is that the bottom line determines where developers develop.

Games and most apps go to Windows, because that's where the money is. Sometimes they get ported elsewhere, but typically after the windows version is out and making money.

You would be right, it favors iOS as customers there will get better support unlike android where a lot of the paid apps are super buggy.

The truth is they can call us apple and get the specs for the current device and now nothing they make in the next two years will be that different... apple makes middle of the road devices that fall within a certain percent of the existing devices. they can test an iphone from the release of the iphone and they can figure out if it will run on the latest and greatest iphone. that is why they target iphone it is easier to do. when you develop for android you have to test every major platform and half the time the newest devices are beyond qa budget for devices despite those are the devices the developers want to target as the most amount of disposable income... in app purchase income was roughly ten to fifteen times the income of the single purchase app. and people wonder why apps have in app purchases even when they have to refund ever seven purchases they are a head of the game of single purchase app. this info is easy to find.
