Why Android Tablets Aren't Selling

Just because you may not see a use for a tablet does not mean they are useless for "99%" of people.
But what are you going to run on them? Android tablet apps are pretty scarce.
I see it as being all about price.. There trying ro mimic an apple product at apples price.. Not going to happen.. in order to beat apple's success's then they need to be cheaper & more reasidly available. neither have been the case for Android Pads.

there's actually a large population of people here who use desktops to surf [H] instead of a mobile device which was very surprising to me. my desktop doesnt even get turned on for the purpose of surfing
+1. I would NOT pay another 3G or 4G subscription. One of the phone is enough and the cell carriers are going nuts with capping, throttling, and extra fees. Makes one think that the US is indeed a third-rate country (other countries seem to be increasing their use of wireless while we are being limited).

For me the problem is easy
1) Matching price with an unproven OS such as HoneyComb vs iPad who has had a year worth of headstart in apps and consumer concious
2) Offering inferior hardware than the iPad 2 at same price point. This is pure suicide, the Tegra 2 cannot compete with the A5 platform, the SGXMP2 GPU destroys nvidia's offering... hopefully Tegra 3 will change this
Point number 2 is directed to those in the know how, with point number one being more important to the average Joe
If anyone has a chance of helping the battle is samsung for me, with their Galaxy S phone they build some rep, and maybe they could ride with a proper tablet (Galaxy P1000 seemed more of an experiment)

My Motorola 3G Xoom has all but completely replaced my 14" Edge Thinkpad. I don't plan on getting rid of my laptop anytime soon but I am using it less and less everyday now... my Xoom is just convenient! It still has a few minor issues but overall I love it....
And here we go! Do you have proof of this or are you just spewing BS from your behind? You'd be amazed at how many iPads are used in the healthcare/education/finacial industry. You think they got them because they're "hipsters"?

Quite simply it is COST. The tablets jsut cost WAY too much and only Apple is going ot be able to continue to sell $500+ tablets. Everyone else HAS to come in lower or they are fucked. Tablets need to come down to $300 or less before they can even think of hitting a larger marketshare. Even at $300 the cost/benefit ratio is close. It need to be an impulse buy, cheaper then a console.

You're going to run a browser. You're going to run email. And you're going to run apps made for phones because most of them also work fine on a tablet.
I picked up a Nook Color, rooted it, installed Phiremod (based on Android 2.3), stopped carrying my laptop. I also carry a jailbroken iphone so I can tether 3g to it if I need it, I'm not interested in another cell phone bill for a tablet.
SSH is easy, Connectbot is a great client. If you're more of a command-line guy, just install Terminal Emulator and run the dropbear ssh client. All the network tools the other poster was complaining about not existing actually do exist, not sure why he would say they don't?
The problem I have with Android is the same problem I have with ios devices, you have to hack them before they're really good. Google won't give you the Market without a fight, Apple won't let you install third party software without a fight, neither want you to tether without a fight (or at least an up-sell).

I have a nice ebook reader, I was watching Netflix last night, i have 4 different browsers (I build web sites so thats actually helpful), flash, a couple games, etc. I sometimes use the NES emulator...

Does that mean the makers of jackets will put an oversize chest pocket in them. Maybe have the Android fold in half or even a high tech screen that rolls out.
I too have a rooted Nook Color running CM7 and I too tether it with my cell most of the time.
I also have to agree with the lack of mic and camera kinda sucking but what can I say, for the $200 I paid for it, it is worth far more then the ebook reader it was sold as.
That's exactly why I don't have an ARM tablet. I like the iPad 2 but even that turns out to be something extra, although very light, to carry around.
I have a 12.1" 4lb ultraportable laptop that is far more useful for Real Serious Work than any tablet (as long as the battery lasts... a drawback). It's even convertable to a tablet and has a touch screen. When I don't need the laptop, my small 960x640 display iPod Touch is about as handy to me as a much bigger 10" 1024x768 iPad would be. Speed on the iPod Touch isn't an issue for my uses.
Most people have absolutely no need for these kinds of things, yes. That doesn't mean there isn't a desire to have them. Like smartphones, high-end computers, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic park assist, pools, spas, custom barbecues, 3D-capable TVs, kayaks and countless other luxury items, tablets are things that are not necessary but things people want anyway. The existence of a product is not always dependent upon that product's ability to satisfy a pressing "need".
You don't buy one of these things because, for the things you want to do with it, it will "work fine". You want things to work much better than "fine".
Cost and capabilities for me. Cost should be $100 less than a comparable Ipad...which may or may not be possible to profit on for a manufacturer, but that's not my problem, they want me to buy something I don't really have a need for. And nvidia screwed the pooch when they designed and released tegra2 without support for high profile 720p h.264 decoding. I would read on a tablet, but I also want it to be able to stream videos off my main box, most of which are 720p+ and high profile encodes. I'm not converting my entire library to baseline profile just to stream to a tablet when I can save the $500-$700 and wait. I'd also like some more horsepower in general, be able to open up 5-10 browser tabs without lagging.
If they can get Kal El in something like the Asus Transformer in time for xmas I'll be all over a laplet (or is it a tabtop?), whatever you call it. My old T61 is getting a little long in the tooth and I'd like something more compact than it's 15.4" screen, but I can't take the performance drop down to a 1-2 core 1GHz ARM cpu.

So, you use your $500 ipad as a $130 ebook? Yeah, I can see why that would cause someone to run out and buy an ipad... Not.
That's true, however, tablets(iPad) have much more functionality than just that.
The reason Android tablets aren't selling is:
1. Price
2. Lack of selection for apps.
That's really it. Why spend the same on an Android tablet (Honeycomb) when you can get an iPad, with infinitely more application possibilities.
I would love to pick up a transformer, but if I'm pretty much stuck to basic Google apps, i'll pass for now, until the marketplace matures. However, I'm confident that Android's tablet offerings will grow, and so will the apps. In time, they'll be on par with Apple.
I dunno I don't think I'd ever buy a tablet unless they were much more powerful with the ability to use a keyboard and mouse or much cheaper. I simply wouldn't have any real use for one to justify the prices being asked. Regardless of whether it's an ipad or android based device.

Sycraft, you are 100% correct. As someone previously said, tablets aren't selling better because there's no tablet market.
Laptops have keyboards. Smartphones fit in the pocket. Desktops have massive power. Tablets have nothing to make them practical. But, no one buys Apple for practical reasons. It's about being cool and trendy. If Apple actually ever made a product that was both practical and a good value, they'd blow their brand.

I see your point. But, how many flatulence apps do you need? Android already has everything Apple has, as far as anything I might want. And, at the current rate, Android apps will pass Apple apps by the end of the year. And, on the price front, Android tablets cost less, even much less if you compromise on specs.
But, the real issue that some of us have raised is that we say there is no tablet market in the first place. It doesn't matter how many apps for the Ipad vs. Android. Price doesn't matter, either. If I'm going somewhere, I'm bound to want a keyboard and I'm not going to carry both a laptop and a tablet. If I don't want to carry anything, the smartphone wins. But, regardless of what portable device I'm using, I'll be wishing I were using my desktop which is better in every way except portability.
totally disagree - I use my ipad2 about 70% of the time at home over getting on my desktop or laptop - I game on the pc but there are several apps that make it easy - twitter, tivo remote, netflix, hulu plus, mail access - internet access, right now I am searching for a house and the realtor.com app is great - When I travel for personal only take the ipad - movies on the plane, online check in - email access all of it on something the size of a magazine - speaking of which I can read my ibooks on the plane, take my tech manuals to the server room - there is a crap ton of stuff I do with it that hauling out a laptop is just not practical.
20million iPads sold in less than a year and a half. The market is definitely there.

Didnt people refer to the personal computer as worthless, and just a toy back in the 80's when it was first invented.
actually it can handle hd playback. and can't handle the same that the ipad can't handle without jailbreaking.
it's highprofile hd that tegra can't handle.

Apple is pro at the "you need this" style of marketing.
The iPad supports High Profile 720p decoding just fine.
They sold like hotcakes when the hackable B&N Nook Color went on sale for $199 (what was that, 10k over a few days?). There's your price point. $200 for an entry level (yesteryears tech) and $500/$600 for the top dog. If they can get netbooks down to $200, I see no reason they can't get these tablets down.

There's many reasons why Apple is doing so successful. They make damn good products. If you're telling me the people that buy Apple products, the people that make Apple to highest profiting, most valuable technology company, and highest rated tech. company with complete dominance in the tablet industry, the most popular brand name for laptops among college students, 5% marketshare of the cell phone industry only being in it 4 years and complete dominance over the MP3 players are just hipsters and/or ignorant people? Wow, I am just speechless. Apparently 200+ million is not enough to leap out of the margin of error for stupid people.
Guys, when does it end? Honestly? You seriously have to get over yourself and realize that at some point, fuck yeah they deserve a little bit of credit. Hat's off to Apple because in such a short amount of time, they've completely changed the market while other companies go "LOOK APPLE MADE MONEYZ LETS TRY WHAT THUR DOIN'!"

I've never met an Apple [censored] who doesn't claim his Apple is practical and useful. They're just not convincing. You tell me some of the apps you use (hulu, email, etc.), but PCs do these things, and better. When you travel, you don't miss a real keyboard? At home, you have no interest in a big screen and good audio, and a real good keyboard?
Okay, the PC doesn't have a Tivo remote app. If Tivo didn't already have a remote and if I watched TV, I might find one point in favor of the iPad. Score: PC 100. Ipad 1.

They've been successful at marketing their products. Product quality is debatable.
Apple sucks because their products don't support DirectX 11. I need BF3 in all it's tessellated glory, anything else is for little girls to play with in grade school
