I know many of us guesstimated that the price of this card were going to be high, but $700! I really want this card, but can't find myself to put down that much cash. My threshold was $600 max shipped . Some may say that it's only a extra $100 dollars, but you got to draw the line somewhere. Hopefully the GTX 590 bring this bad boy down to $600 or $549 so a lot more can have some 6990 goodness!:D
 
Sorry that a criticism is the only opinion I can give, but I don't think a thread was warranted for something like this.

That granted, yes, it is a little bit too rich for most people's blood. Then again, the 5970 had an MSRP of $600 and came in at ~$700, so at least they told the truth :p. I think $650 would be more appropriate for a card like this.
 
It won't stay at $700 long - early/first adopters always get to pay for the price gouging. It'll be into the low $600's soon enough. I don't know why you're surprised - this happens with every flagship release.
 
It's also a low production card, so they aren't looking for mass price appeal at this time.
 
Im sorry but the 590 will not bring the price down because the 590 with either be

1 a limited edition card and will sell out in a few days just like the 3gb 580s and we will never see them again...

2 they will be 1000+ and not worth it just like 1000 for 2 580s is not wrth it to some people...


Only time will bring down this cards price and honestly unless you run 5x1p there is no point in getting this card at all...
 
Knowing nvidia, the GTX590 will probably cost more than $700, I don't see the 6990's price going anywhere. I think anyone that expected the 6990 to be considerably less than $700 was being a bit delusional.

Except for almost the entire HD5000 series, from the lowly HD5750 to the HD5970 (I didn't keep tabs on the lower end stuff), which all launched at lower prices, before being vendor gouged and later even receieving an official MSRP bump, then being gouged out until the GTX400 series, which, short of one card, the GTX460, was often priced "appropirately" to the HD5000 lineup, and at times, higher. So the HD5000 series prices stayed sky high up until the past few months, almost a full year after the HD5870 launch.

EDIT: though you are right, it normally starts really high, and goes down quickly after that.

According to your signature, you are running dual 4870's in CFX mode.

I know exactly how you can get a 6990 for around $640-650!

yeah, two HD6950 2GB unlocked would work, since the memory clocks of the HD6990 are only 5gbps (effective).
 
Lately high end AMD cards seem to be catered to the elite. If you don't have the cash to buy it I'm sure some one who does have the money will. All marketing IMO. With recent pricing history I wouldn't be surprised to see the price of this card rise for awhile.

It's a good card.

If you have $600 available and you really want this card then save a little bit longer and buy it. I think the price will go up before it comes down.

Low supply and no competition is the reason why the card's price is so high, it costs like $900 here in Australia and that is bullshit. I'm pretty sure once the GTX 590 is released the price will go down, thats if the GTX 590 will beat the 6990 or NVIDIA will release it at a sane price.

I think I get where you're coming from on this. It's been what, over a year since a low-end card came out for AMD and nVIDIA. I personally can't wait to see what the newest low-end offerings from AMD and nVIDIA will be. Hopefully they make strides in performance while delivering good power efficiency/consumption.

I would disagree. It's been skewed lately, because nVidia hasn't launched a dual-GPU card since the GTX 295.

The past two generations, we've seen AMD's flagship single-GPU card priced well below nVidia's flagship single-GPU card, but AMD has offered a dual-GPU version of it priced more than anything nVidia had.

If a dual 512sp GF110 card comes out, it will be priced above the 6990.
 
The fastest single card premium bumps it up a little. Hopefully the GTX 580 drops in price soon.

I'm just glad they didn't take the Nvidia route and charge $500+ for the performance market leader. Even when MSRP went up to $430, that was still $70-$230 cheaper than Nvidia's launch-day prices for a flagship. Even now, Nvidia has the performance leading GPU and they're gouging people hardcore for $500 (about $70 more than the 5870 even at its highest point).
