Available for download, OEM out in April. Response is, generally, ambivalent/divided.

Hasn't hit my MSDN yet. I'll keep looking. I was on the original beta (before DE was stripped) and recently moved to WHS V1 (because of lack of DE in RC), but I'm having issues with that (refuses to duplicate any data).

*edit* Just checked the news report, available for download in early April. That's good news. I wonder if Drive Bender (insert DE replacement here) will be ready by then.
 
It's up on MSDN. I noticed a trial download is up as well, but the kicker for the trial is that you can't activate it (says right on the page that you must reinstall with a non-trial copy).

After giving WHS V1 a spin, I will be going to V2. I liked the newer backup (server + client), 2008 structure, and online interface enough to warrant the jump. Right now I can do a software raid on my data until the DE replacements get matured.
 
is WHS 2011 exclusively 64-bit? I'd like to upgrade my parents' home server but it uses a early-gen Atom which is 32-bit only.

Some of the third-party DE replacement products look interesting, but I wish MS hadn't killed the feature. The third-party products are still miles behind what DE used to be. Regardless, I think I'll still pick it up. In my mind, it's still the best home backup solution for the money.

V2 (2011) is only 64bit, not 32bit. WHS is designed for the HOME not enterprise level equipment. The home market will see no need for an (actual) 128bit processor for quite some years so putting R&D into such an OS is pointless. WHS 2011 is built on the 2008 R2 architecture, which is also x64.

Agreed. The feature was slick in the beta of Vail, worked superb and better than WHS V1 - I thought. The whole reasoning behind killing it was stupid anyways. How about you just hide the feature in SBS 2011 (can't be that hard, they've done the hidden/locked feature thing for years) and tell Home Server users that they're idiots if they put a database on the storage pool.

Which is a good thing - MS's underlying tech here (VSS) is way better than how Apple implements time machine on Mac, but apple makes the whole thing work with a slick interface, while MS has nothing. From a customers point of view Apple has something (even if it's a bit of a kludge from a technological aesthetics point of view) that work, MS needs to leverage it's better technology and finish the package out.

Completely agree. I mean, Vista HP had shadow copy support and even reserved a certain amount of space for them on the drive even if the user couldn't access them. To leverage it, you needed to download a third-party utility. WTF?
