WHS V1 Missing Disk problem

So one of my hard drives would not spin up and WHS reported a disk failure.

I pulled the hard drive out of the system, plugged it into another computer and tapped it a little and it seems to be working fine now. I put the disk back into the WHS server and fired it back up. Now this drive seems to be working fine, but it is reporting that another drive (1Tb instead of 2TB) is missing.

However, when I count my drives all 8 of them are there, so I'm not sure what this 9th drive is, that is missing...I am unable to remove the drive, I get an error that there are disk conflicts.

Now, this missing drive, seems to register the same temperature as another drive in the system, so it seems to me that WHS is picking up the same drive twice. There really is no other explanation because it is reporting 9 drives and there are only 8 in the system...

So how do I get WHS to let me remove this drive? How do i find out what the file conflicts are?

I think I will try to remove the "duplicate" drive that is still part of the pool and see if it can resolve the conflicts.

You're going to want to give the machine time to remove whatever is on the drive.

Have you seen this?

Yea that didn't work because I was getting an error pretty much right away. Turns out DE was turned off, once back on I was able to remove the drive. Also turns out I did in fact have a 9th drive installed that i wasn't seeing.

Now I just need to figure out if I can use this 2TB drive I purchased. I opened it up and it says it is Advanced Format :(

Looks like WD has a work-around but I dunno about other manfgs......

Thanks Hippie, I found think link for the toshiba but I'm not understanding it.

I might be reading it wrong but it looks like the drive will do emulation to write, but it says it will impact performance. Might cause issues since I'm recording from security cameras?

I ran this program on the WHS box, and there was no partition detected. So I added the disk to the storage pool and re-ran the program. Now it shows the partition as not optimized. So I let the program optimize it, which corrupted the storage pool :( So i guess the drive is not 100% compatible but will work witht he WHS partition not optimized? Seems like the program just makes it into a 4k sector drive, but reading the description it sounded like it would detect the OS and optimize the drive. Fail.

Uh Oh.

Doesn't sound good. :(

This thread also has some good info and the link is for page 21 to 26.

Looks like WD is your best bet.

I know I'll be staying far away from AF drives.

Sorry I couldn't bring better news. ):

Well thats no good, I already tried some green drives sometime back and had nothing but problems with them in WHS... I guess no one makes hard drives I can use anymore :(

I will just have to return it less shipping and re-stock fee I guess. Is there any 2Tb drives besides the green ones that will work? Will WD black work? I can't find anything but other people with the same questions when I search.

Returning to newegg will cost me $35 that's almost 1/2 the cost of the drive :(

Yep, it works just fine.

I have a WD Green WD10EADS 1TB in mine and have never had a problem.
I don't recall turning-off the time out feature and I don't think you can do it anymore.

If I were you I'd be buying a WD 2TB Black.
