I'll be replacing my 4850 with a 5850 most likely (still waiting on benchies) once the prices settle down.
How long is the 5850? I'm gaming at 1680x1050 as well and have been debating on which to get. If I have to, I can cut up my HDD cage and make room....shouldn't be too hard.
The 5850 is shorter than the 5870, which is supposedly 10.5"
Currently debating between the 5850 and the 5870 for my first build. Was going for the 5850, but saw another mobo that would allow me to take the 5870 (at the cost of not being able to run crossfire), which would be overkill @ 1600x900, but I've been "gaming" on regular PCI for the last four years..![]()
Yeah, future 5850 owner here. Anandtech stated they won't be available until next week, however.
I only game on 1680x1050 and I have been waiting for this card to upgrade from my 8800GT 512mb which in it's defense has been an excellent card for the time being. In fact there is not a lot of games right now that it struggles with, coupled with my aging Q6600 at 3.2ghz I think these are the longest I've ever had a single set of components for. The lifespan on them was amazing. I am eying the 5850 as mainly a future proof but I would also like to maybe go back and replay some games (Crysis, etc.) with higher settings/higher fps.

Anandtech said:Compared to the Radeon HD 4870, the 5870 has seen some changes to the board design. AMD has now moved to using a full sheath on their cards (including a backplate), very much like the ones that NVIDIA has been using since the 9800GTX. The card measures 10 long, an inch over the 4870, and half of an inch under the 4870x2 and the NVIDIA GTX lineup.
Anandtech said:Briefly, the 5850 that we are not testing today will be slightly smaller than the 5870, coming in at 9.5. It keeps the same cooler design, however the PCIe power connectors are back on the rear of the card.
No reviews yet.
I still only have a 15" monitor, due to space restrictions!

I'm also on this boat. For me gaming at 1680x1050 and coming from a 8800GTS makes sense to go 5850 plus the price $259 looks very tempting.
Now I must find availability![]()
I'll jump on a 50 when I can get one closer to $200 than $250. With a rebate + Bing CB I think it'll happen before xmas.
I try my hardest to spend under $200 on gpu's. I blew $250 on my 8800gt and was sorry about it when it went under $200 just three months later.
If there was a 58x0 at the $150 price point I'd order today.
5770 should be out in a month and be around 150
what system are you going to put the 5850 in? also the 4850 is 90 bucks so how much lower do you want it? tbh it will go likely just go out of production before it gets any cheaper.
I just saw this review, and the 4550 is the 'best bang for the buck' in the 1024x768 section!
I'm now debating to get a 5850, or let it suppress the 4850 prices...
I'm very likely going for a HD 5850 for my new computer when Windows 7 come out. It feels like the ideal card for me, sharing many of the same traits of its faster brother. I wonder how a HD 5850 performs in Crysis in comparison with a HD 5870.
