Although not as good as an equivalently clocked C2Q, it should be worth close to double the production capability of your current processor it will replace. That's almost certain.Depending on how things go, I might actually spend a bit of the stimulus check BS on a B3 Phenom x4 to upgrade my current X2 4000+@3.0. While not a huge boost, it should do well.
Go for the 45nm chips, especially if it's later in the year when prices will be a little better. The extra cache and higher OC potential will be important with the new SMP WUs Stanford is releasing and will release later. Future proofing is highly advisable if possible and/or affordable.I also plan on building at least one more Intel quad box, whether it's 65nm or 45nm remains to be seen before the year is out. I can always handle another 4k-5k PPD.
The Beckton variant of Nehalem (octal-core) will be available only for server platforms to replace or run alongside the Dunnington hex-core being released in the 2H of this year. These are MP processors for quad sockets and above, unfortunately. Although there are still rumors circulating of a dual-socket Dunnington, it is unlikely Intel will manufacture a run of DP hex-cores or octal-cores in the near future unless the competition (aka AMD) does also. Desktop octal-cores are even further in the future but again, it depends on the competitive landscape.After that I'll probably be waiting and saving up some cash (as well as paying off bills) and jump on the Nehalem processors when they come out if they are even remotely affordable as a total system and have performance which dwarfs the current processors. Damn I would love to get my hands on an 8 core Nehalem.
