Wow...I always thought the SoundBlaster AWE32 would be the longest consumer card I'd ever see but now it's this thing.
 
Ay, for some reason or another I have never been as excited about a card as when John Carmack wrote about the then the newly announced GeForce 256:

“It is fast.Very, very fast.”

I always remember this quote very single time I buy a new piece for the computer, it being a new GPU, CPU or SSD.

My sophomore year of college my roommate got his shiny new Canopus 6MB Voodoo card with Quake2 to pair up with his Pentium 166 and amazing 19" CRT monitor. 6MB was HUGE, Canopus was the only manufacturer adding to the stock 4MB of RAM that the Voodoo card had- I don't even remember what he had paid for it.

I eventually upgraded my Cyrix 133 to a Pentium 166 (my very first computer build!) and picked up a Creative Labs 4MB Voodoo card to match up with whatever ATI card I had at the time. Jedi Knight 2 never looked so good!
 
LOL, those RAGE cards were a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost bought one of those cards back in the day. Didn't the 2nd GPU cease to function under an NT OS???

I answered my own question (quoted from Wikipedia): It was later discovered by ATI that Windows NT 5.x operating systems (Windows 2000, XP) did not support dual AGP GPUs in the way ATI had implemented them. Windows 5.x put them both on the AGP bus and switched between them, and so the board could only operate as a single Rage 128 Pro with the performance of a Rage Fury card. The optimal OS for the Rage Fury MAXX is Windows 98/ME. Windows 95 and Mac OS were not supported.

How was the s3 virge useful for decent? Wouldnt decent require the 3dfx card? I played decent 2 not the original.

As a reference:
I recall that mechwarrior 2 mercenaries, and quake 2 were my first 3d accelerated games. Got the computer sometime in '97

I just googled that SB that you mentioned... wow.

And here I am thinking today's GPU boards like the 5970 are long. Haha they beat that by a long shot. :)
