Whiney noise

... and no, it's NOT my voice... okay?

Hello,

Thought I was immune to this, but:

There is a high pitch whine when I am folding. Only when I am folding. It's small, but noticeable.

Is there anything I can do about it? <--from what I have seen, NO.

Or am I just going to have to bear with this?

Many thanks,
-Jeremy

It's probably one or more of the fans in your system. If you think you've identified it, the only thing I can suggest is replacing it with a quieter model; changing the entire cooling assembly for something better or lowering the OC to reduce heat. Other than going to an alternative cooling solution like water, there's not much else you can do.

Now if the problem isn't fan related at all, that will be a little harder to trace and resolve.

I think it's my desk lamp, lol. I probably should of thought of that first, before posting.

My PSU is just noisey (it's meant to be a 1U server PSU... yet it has a PCIe 6pin!?).

Thank you very much, APOLLO!

p.s. It took me a long time... then I put my ear to the desk lamp, and well... problem solved. Now I cannot see beyond this overbrightened backlight!

For budget PSUs, I've always really liked the Antec Earthwatts. I don't have experience with Corsair PSUs but either would work for you and your budget.

Yep.

And the high pitched whine is probably coming from your GPU. One of the coils. Shut the client down. Does the whine stop? If so it's the vid card.

Kendrak do you know if hot gluing the coils on a noisy video card would stop the high pitched squealing?
I have a 9600GT that is crazy squealing so I was thinking of hot gluing it.

Hot glue generally remedies the problem. The problem is harmonic vibrations from a poorly insulated inductor (coil). Hot glue has worked for others in the past.

Hot glue usually only works on unsealed inductors (ones with the physical coil actually exposed rather than completely enclosed in a plastic casing). It's worth a shot though.

lol, I am really sorry for stupidly starting this! It turns out, it was me desklamp (primarily), however, my PSU does have a whine in it. It slight, but true. (but then, it's a Seasonic meant to be in a server enviorment, 1U servers to be exact).

Not stupid Jeremy. Squealing video cards is an issue sometimes with high loads experienced with folding so it got other people thinking and talking.. nothing at all wrong or stupid with either.

I thought about the possibility of a badly designed coil, but didn't recall the video cards known to be affected by this. That could very well be the issue. In my case, I may have such a card but can't hear high frequencies so it wouldn't matter.

"Whiney noise"

Only cure I ever found for that was a divorce :D

lol:)

Also, the 9600GSO I have does not contain a coil, strangely, a XFX HD 4350 does... though it's 'sealed'.

I always thought the coil was for higher power cards? Or is it just dependant on how good the PCB layout designer was?

Speaking of whining, I'm doing some right now myself. My only boxen that is folding right now was humming along nicely @ 260 PPD for a couple days until this chewy P4456 WU it was assigned last night. I've now fallen to 127 PPD. Ugh. :p Can't wait til I get moar "D" online later in the week.

Heh.... I still cannot believe how much faster the 9600GSO is over the 8500gt :).

It's off, until I get a new PSU (to-day).

Good luck Tobit! I've seen a lot of your posts in the FT/FT section, as of late :D <-- means more 'D'!

Inductors are part of the voltage regulation circuitry for all video cards. They all have at least one.

wait... are they those little black boxes? It's about the same size as the 'open top' coil on the XFX card I have (HD4350).

The description "little black box" can apply to several different types of components. Could be an inductor.

Good point. The writing (3 alphanumerics) on the side seems to confirm that.

(1R0, R30, one doesn't have any, and another is behind a capacitor)

Thank you, Zero82z! I don't want to know the crap I'd be spewing without you to keep me in check!

Hmm.. Anyone got some more info on this hot glue method? My 3 260's (when they are running, rig has crashed last 2 nights in a row) all whine, and its LOUD together. I ignore it because Im usually not in the office, to busy doing other work, but Id love to fix that if I could

Is there an open coil? (typically semi-encased)

If you have XFX cards, they glue them already at the factory.

3 MSI's, Id have to take off the shrouds, they are the old 192's

Okay... now it's a humming sound.

Probably the PSU fans, jonnyguru's review states the ss400h1u can get noisey...

LOL, yep and i bet she can say the same thing :p

you know why divorces are so expensive? because they are WORTH it.

so its down to a endurable hum? hey Vaulter98c, how do the older 192's produce, i got my hands on a EVGA GTX260 w/192 this week end for 80.00...just waiting till i have some time to install it.

Divorce is so expensive.

Use a gag.

Griff, I get 7500 PPD one one with shaders clocked 1500ish

Nice grab, great price!

I'm running stock, 7.4 on 353's, drop to 5.2 on the nasty WU's
You could OC but I've had stability issues in past setups so I don't OC anything anymore

yeah i had to get it..whats the saying, easier to ask forgiveness than for permission

thanks, that is a gonna be a nice increase for my ppd
