I'm currently running on an x3 710, stock speeds paired with a 5870 8 gigs of 1333 in a gigabyte ma770 ud3.... something something board.

The x3 has been a stupendous little workhorse, but i'm finding myself with some... twitchiness these days. And i'd like some processing power to toss at vmware for xcode stuff. Shiny new games too.

So... get a thuban? Which one? And why?

I'm way out of the loop these days, and not really interested In anything resembling real overclocking.

thanks!

Wait a little bit longer and see what Bulldozer brings... sure, it would mean a new motherboard but it may well be worth it.

I've been seeing/giving this advice for what seems like years now. I do feel that it's still best to wait, yet my patience wears more and more thin by the day. I hope we're almost there. The shitty part is I could have just bought a 2500/2600 a long ass time ago and been enjoying it. I'm running a c2d FFS! Must. Hold. Out.

we've waited this long for BD, a few more weeks isn't going to kill us.
tho people sitting on AM3+ (or AM3 certified to work with BD by board manufactures) have been thinking this since june, july, august, september (getting the picture).
to be fair tho, there has been a lot more noise lately with the big spot-light on the overclock attempt. i think this time we are finally close to a launch date...

I have an OEM 1035T for sale in the forums here if you're interested ;) It's overkill for my home server :(

Heh the only things I've been drooling over are end of semester dates so I can quit spending all my time doing homework.

I'm not really worried about bd. Though I think it will be nifty as hell to read the reviews and see whats really going on there. For the past few years I really just chase the "fire and forget" version of computing. basically does it work, and do I Have to tinker with it, as opposed to i can tinker if the mood hits me.

An x6 that i know will work, and maybe a case woth a few 250 mm fans so i dont have to listen to it howl...

Forgive the screwey capitilazation and spelling, this ipad can be a pain in the ass.:D

if you really want a x6 now, get a 1090T .... OC's just as well as the 1100T, and is a fraction more than the 1055T or others...

The 1100 is 20$ more. with $15 off with promo code HARDOCPX914D, ends 9/20

whats the difference? a few mhz?

between the 1100 and te 1090t

Either 1090T or 1100T, personally I went with the 1090T because stock clock 100mhz to both base and turbo wasn't worth the aditional premium, especially when both of them see the same statistical ceiling on OC. Running my 1090T, turbo off under a H50 @ 1.500v @ 4.0GHz 100% load as I fold 24/7. Temps never go over 40c with my push/pull config in a 25c room.

this, 1100 is basically same chip with higher default multiplier. Seen prices on 1090T as low as $159-$169 lately

If your overclocking, there is zero difference.....at this point what you find is going to be pretty mature silicone.....so the OC maximums will be the same for both chips for the most part.... save the $$ get the 1090T

that siad, i personally would say wait for BD .... at this point it isnt going to be far away to see performance, worst case you wait a few weeks and you save more $$ since BD will drive down the price of Thuban's

I know people have been saying "Wait for Bulldozer" for quite some time now, but this time I think it is accurate. Review sites are actually under NDA now, so its only a matter of at most several days before we have actual reviews, and volume part availability in retail will probably be end of month to early October some time.

It's so close I can feel it.

Back in June as soon as the 990FX motherboards hit the market, I went ahead and picked up a 1090T as my "hold me over until Bulldozer" chip, expecting to do a CPU swap into the same board as soon as Bulldozer launched, but at that point in time I felt fairly confident there were a few months of waiting left. Now I feel its right around the corner, and I would not suggest dumping money on a high end Phenom II right now.

Even if you don't feel the need to get a Bulldozer, once it drops you'll see lots of people selling their slightly used Phenom II's at highly discounted prices (I'll be one of them) after they upgrade.

AMD and their retail channels are likely to heavily discount existing new stock of Phenom II's as well...

This. Worth waiting for inevitable price drops.

makes sense to me.

Thanks for the tips :D

Any time.

I also wanted to comment on this below:

I'm way out of the loop these days, and not really interested In anything resembling real overclocking.

If you get a recently manufactured Phenom II it will be mostly wasted if you don't overclock it. They are so easy to overclock, since the silicon is so mature, and run stably on air up to 4ghz for the X6's and up to 4.2 for the X4's, that there really is no reason not to.

Besides that, they are not really competitive at stock clocks.

Hold out till the launch in next few weeks. If you find out launch is late october or another delay announced, just get a frickin 2600k and be done with it. Its so close, but waiting any longer than a month would be stupid at this point since SB-E and Ivy Bridge are right around corner also.

I seriously doubt I'll have the cash for Ivy. I'd love to have it though. Might be the same story for BD. Maybe. I'm not exactly rolling in disposable income.

The likeliest scenario is, if I can't put it in my current board it's not going to happen for a long while. At which point the new new stuff will be out. :p At least thats the way it usually works out

I bought a 1090t as my "holdover chip" and I've been pretty happy with it. It overclocks well and is honestly much better than what I had before. I'll probably sell it once Bulldozer comes out, but I'm tempted to just stay put for a while.

Just get the 1090t and get it over with! Then wait until the generation after bulldozer.

I too was waiting for BD but I needed a working computer so what I did was purchased a AM3+ board and bought a used x6 CPU. Now I'm waiting till the BD CPU's came out and probably pass the x6 down to someone in my family or sell it.

Edit: nvm, didn't read post fully.

I agree with the wait till Bulldozer comes out sentiment, if only because it'll (most likely) drive down prices of the Thuban. Besides, the 6-core Bulldozer is set to have an MSRP of around $190, which isn't that much more expensive than the current top-end Phenom II x6.

Check your mobo BIOS support. FWIW, I was facing the same question. I went with a 1090T because the BIOS for that had been out for 6 months and was stable. The same board could only support the 1100T with a beta BIOS. It had a some negative feedback.

Whichever you decide, as everyone else has mentioned, with BD about to be released you should see the x6 prices start to drop.

Good luck.

I am going to wait and see if the BD release drops the price some more. Every $ saved is more sushi money. :D

Yep, wait on BD.

I bought a 1055T for my AMD rig way back when they first hit. It's good for 4.1GHz on air. I've still got an HD 5870 @1000|1275 in that computer. I may upgrade the CPU and graphics card when AMD releases their latest.
