I have a single core Venice 3800+ @ 2750mhz (10.5x261htt) and at 1.60V

I want a dual core but want to make sure that I can get up to those speeds or higher on a 939 dual core as my single core. My HTT/FSB doesnt go much higher than 261. So basically I need a dual core that has a high multiplier. Any suggestions? I have no intention on upgrading to any other platform as that is not really in my interest right now so please reserve comments to strictly 939 dual core CPU recommendations. Thanks!

Will dual cores run hotter or cooler than my current system if both are overclocked?
 
good luck finding one! I've been looking at getting something to replace my fx-55 but i cant find any s939 chips at reasonable prices.
 
newegg.com sells many s939 chip. I got the top of line opteron 185 (2.6Ghz 13 multiplier) for $239 couple month ago.
 
I got a 4200+ x2 OEM for 80 bucks last week, overclocked to 2.8 ghz w/o effort (seems to of copped out above 2850, but im still working on that).
 
I picked up an Opty 170 from Newegg last month and it clocked to 2.8 without problems. It would goto 3.0, but got way to hot on stock cooling (the heatsink that ships with it is HUGE) and needed more voltage than I was comfortable using.

I did buy a 3800x2 a couple of months ago, Manchester core, and it will hit 2.5 without much trouble.
 
To keep load temps under 55C air cooled generally 2.7 - 2.8 will be the ceiling regardless
of dual core chip, opteron or x2. Go with a x2 4200+ ($70) as it offers the best bang for the $
for the speed and contraints mentioned.

Ive seen them go higher, but the majority top out at 2.7-2.9.
 
I just got my 4200+ this week and I've hit 2.6ghz with stock volts. :D
 
I miss them ol' AMD days! I'm workin on a stable 3.8ghz on my sig rig now, but I hope AMD makes a come back! :)
 
I'd go with the 4200+ OEM if you have a good cooler. Clock speed matters more than cache size with these chips anyhow (wish I knew that before I got my opty... o wellz).
 
I am after a Opteron 180, the fastest my motherboard can handle. i just dont have the money now that i am moving this weekend therwise I would have already bought it at $185. One last upgrade before getting an AM2 system.

Yes, and no...it depends on what app you're running. If it does utilize the cache more than the clockspeed, it won't be as fast, however, most programs do better with more clockspeed rather than cache. Clock for clock, the higher cache part will be faster, but it won't be much faster. Lower cache parts tend to clock better (hence most of the AM2 X2's are 2x512k vs. 2x1mb).

Opty 185 is the fastest s939 part right? Opty 180 is the same as the 4800+ and the 185 is the same as the FX-60 (without the unlocked multiplier).

I don't know how is the OC capability of X2 4200+ Toledo cores, but with my X2 3800+ Toledo cores (with half cache disabled) I have problem OC it more than 10% to 2.2Ghz even with OCZ EL Gold PC4000 2x1GB 500Mhz.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro is a good choice. Cheap and Cool. I use it on Opteron 185 OC 2.86Ghz.
 
That's strange I'm new to the AMD world and I had no problem hitting 2.7Ghz on and x2 3800. And that's with cheap memory on a cheap motherboard. Toledos are are know to be good overclockers, which is one of the reasons I bought mine.

Is the S939 Opteron 185 the fastest S939 that is going to be made? If so I may upgrade to it - my board is S939, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. Currently running a 3500+ from 2 years back, considering jumping up to this if I will see a decent performance increase.

Socket 939 has been discontinued since Dec'06. There will be no new s939 chips. The Opteron 185 and FX-60 are the fastest stock chips that were ever made for s939. You can get a lower speed opteron and OC it to the same speeds, btw.
 
Hate to bump this thread but does anyone know when Newegg will probably stop carrying the S939s? I'm wanting to upgrade but if they've been discontinued since Dec 06 I don't want to run the risk of Newegg not carrying them anymore.

Then buy one now? not like some new 939 chip is going to come out.
 
Money is unfortunately the cause...if I can hold off a month when I start my next job I would prefer to do so, but if newegg were to stop carrying them that would be kind of disastrous.

AM2s go for little of nothing now. You wouldn't exactly be losing out. Theres a huge premium on the high end socket 939 parts thats not worth paying.

I'm guessing he needs to upgrade an already existing s939 setup, but I'm not completely sure. If that is the case, the AM2 prices are useless to him.

I believe newegg will stop selling 939 parts when stock runs out. I have no clue what their stock is like, but I'm guessing they'll still have some in a month.
