Which Wireless Router?

I can't decide on a wireless router. Every one at work is telling me to get one with 108Mbps data rate. What do you suggest?

I've had problems with Linksys-D-link and None with Netgear.

The 624b wired and now using the Wpn824 (108mbs) wireless. Setup was a snap with The new encryption. YMMV
.

"Discalimer" I maybe one of the few who has had no conenction drops and firmware problems.

Hp-2710- wireless
Gateway M-7525 lappy
Homebuilt with hardwire and Wpn311wireless
Homebuilt with cheapo Airnet $10 G-card no probs at all

Good luck

I would go with either Linksys or D-Link. I have had the opposite luck as SereLaw. Linksys routers with some of the aftermarket firmwares are great to work with. Every D-Link I've had has performed beautifully. However every Netgear (3 of them) I have owned has given me trouble. The netgears would work great until I started putting some serious traffic through them. They would then lock up solid about every few hours.

The thing that I would really recommend is what I have now. A linux based firewall (IPCop in my case) and a separate access point. You get much more customization and stand alone access points seem to be much more robust and offer more features than their all-in-one relatives.

You never said what exactly you are running on your network. How many machines, which ones will be wired, wireless, etc.

Unless you plan on doing a lot of large file transfers, standard G is usually enough.

I use the DI-624( D-Link) at home, and I have had some connection hickups a few months ago but its doing fine now. Linksys just got better, due to Cisco owning them now, I suggest Linksys, no probs at lans with any of their equipment.

One thing you might consider is waiting for wireless N set ups, due to the fact that they cancel out G and B wireless connections (or at least thats what I had heard).

Im going to be playing Xbox 360 live and a computer running cs source and world of warcraft. Possibly some wireless lan partys with 3 computers and 2 360's on live. I am just afraid of hiccups while im playing games.

Is there any way you can have atleast some (the 360s) wired to the router? This can drastically lower the lag you may experiance by using wireless. I run wires to anything that doesn't move around and always plug my laptop in when I play games.

I'd go with a regular WRT54G, alot of the other wireless products out there are all based off the 802.11G, don't waste your money on false advertising. You will not really notice any dramatic boost, if any at all. I was using a WRT54GS for a while with speed booster card, got 125Mbps, never noticed a single difference over 54Mbps. Save your money, get a WRT54G, the standard seems to be hanging around for a while .

I have the D-Link DI-624 which is the 108Mbps and I was having a lot of problems. After upgrading to the latest firmware on the D-Link website, I still had problems until one of the D-Link tech staff told me to try their version 2.71beta firmware which wasn't on their site but on their FTP server. So I got it, updated the firmware, and it's been smooth sailing from there.
