Mine sits Vertically. What about you?

Is one way better then the other?!?

Horizontal.

Heat dissipation shouldn't be affected since it pushes air out the back and pulls air in mostly from the non-harddrive side (bottom).

Horizontal it fits better on the shelf and wont get knocked over.

I had both my consoles vertical for a while... just recently I decided to move them horizontal. Either way, I don't think it really matters much

Mine sits horizontal. The previous 3 I had all sat vertical and all RROD on me. Then this guy said sit it horizontal because it relieves some pressure or something crazy he said. I did that and it hasn't failed yet. Don't know if that has anything to do with it not failing but I'm leaving it that way. PS3 sits the same way.

Prefer vertical, seems better for heat dissipation, but what do I know? Going back to horizontal so it fits in my home theatre shelf. Also afraid of it getting knocked down while there's a game in the tray.

Mine used to sit horizontal inside a closed cabnet with cooling fans (in the cabnet). Now it sits like this (just not on carpet).

Vertically. Seems like it can dissipate heat a bit more efficiently.

How do you figure that? Much of the inlet holes are restricted when you stand it up...

Once the game is installed to the HDD, it is EXTREMELY quiet in comparison. I am actually going to put a 60mm fan on the CPU heatsink (between that and the heat pipe for the video card) just because they get so darn hot.

Other than that, it is very quiet. I can hear my PSU fan speed up and slow down now. I swapped out the 120mm fan that the case came with for a Scythe SlipStream (1,200 RPM) and it is quieter while moving slightly more air (I tested out of the case for both). I have yet to see the Xbox give the fan a full 12v, so it really doesn't make much noise.

My 360 used to sit vertically to save desk space. Then one day it tipped over and fell on its side while I was rewiring underneath my desk. That caused the RRoD.

Now it sits horizontally all the time.

Not sure, it just seems like when the console gets hot, instead of having one whole side trapped facing the floor it can use both full sides to passively take the temps down. Who knows: I do it because it also happens to conveniently fit in with all my other junk on my shelve.

Same. I was thinking there's more surface area if it stands vertically to exchange heat.

Horizontally seems better. I notice my disks are less scratched. Also it seems like the system is "cooler" because i put some wood pieces underneath is to prop it up and keep the air ducts opened up rather than be obstructed by the wood floor.

Just upgraded to the elite about a month ago and it runs better to me. Also it was not too much more expensive once i sold my xbox 360 20gb and used the money towards buying the xbox 360 elite.

horizontally on two small pieces of wood like stilts...it breathes real nice

Exactly what i do :). You just have to line the wood pieces up so they dont cover the air ducts up which is very easy to do.

If you really want it cool then you can also run a floorstanding fan on the xbox 360 to keep it extremely cool.

The nyko intercooler actually made my xbox 360 overheat rather than cool down the system.

That case isn't going to passively remove any heat considering it's a better insulator than heat conductor (especially since there's a metal case in there with air in between it and the plastic. DIRECT air flow is what's going to cool it and not giving the largest air intake the ability to take in lots of air will hinder this. When I had the stock case, I used rubber feet to sit the console up higher so the bottom holes were also unobstructed.

I like it horizontal. Ever since my dog tipped my vertical PS2 over a few years back and almost gave me a heart attack I've been having a phobia of vertical consoles, haha

I really don't see your logic here, if you stand it vertical the main inlet holes are on the bottom and are restricted by the ground. The top is covered by the hard drive dock and DVD drive. The sides do not have many air holes and one side is blocked off by the motherboard.

As far as surface area, if your talking about the case, not much heat is going to dissipate through the steel case then through the plastic body.

Its not going to overheat, but I wouldn't say it cools better that way.

I keep mine vertical, mainly because the only other spot I could put it would be on top of my AVR... which puts out a decent amount of heat. It would DEFINITELY overheat in either position if I were to put it on there!
