rig 1:
s939 Asus A8V-X
A64 3200+ @2.0GHz
1GB DDR/400

rig 2:
GA-P35-DS3L
E2160@3.0GHz
2GB DDR2/800

both with same HDDs, fans, etc
GFX card not considered because won't do any 3D stuff, just 24/7 fileserver.
 
If it's a 24/7 file-server, no need to OC the E2180 then. Your file serving won't speed up due to an increase in clock speed.

Now which model Athlon64 3200+ is that? Clawhammer? Newcastle? Winchester? Venice?

Anyway, I'd say Rig 2 would pull a bit more power than Rig 1 if the E2160 is overclocked. However, Rig 2 would provide substantially more CPU power if you're doing folding, encoding, streaming, virtualization, etc.
 
Being a VIA chipset, it probably pulls very little power. I concur that Rig 2 pulls more power.
 
My E2160 fileserver that I ordered will be overclocked and folding obviously :D We would always welcome more people...

Actually, it's a bit hard to tell because while the CPU might consume more, it's also more efficient (65nm vs 90nm) and DDR2 is also more efficient. I think that overall, the newer rig would be more efficient especially if it is paired with a 80+ efficient PSU.
