So I'm looking to build a new server with some money that I got for Christmas. My old server (a Dual Opteron, 10 GB of DDR) is too loud, large, and sucks too much power. I've been looking at several options. At work I received an email from an AMD rep about a promo for an AMD Opteron 4122 and Asus KCMA-D8 for $299. From what I've read up on the processor, it draws around ~70ish watts idle. Add 8 GB of DDR3 and I'd be good. I have plenty of cases and power supplies so I'd only need the RAM. This is option 1.

Option 2 would to go with a server grade Atom D510 board with 4 GB of DDR2 SODIMMs for ~$200-230. I again already have the RAM and a case available.

Option 3 would be some sort of other build be it a X4 Phenom or something Intel. I'd want it to be powerful, but also fairly low power.

What I'm doing with this server would (possibly) ESXi, but for sure Server 2008 R2 Standard. It'd be for personal use and file storage as well as for testing purposes for server stuff, hence why the ESXi. My budget is $400 max canadian. All I need is a motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Everything else I have. 6 SATA ports would be a plus, as well as KVM over IP. I'm really leaning towards option 1, but any input would be appreciated. (I apologize if this post is poorly written, my brain's wiped tonight.)
