Which processor heat up worst ?

Which heat up worst, the AMD X2 3800+ (Socket 939) or the Pentium 4 HT 540 ?

I got an old computer with a P4HT 540 processor, which will be sent to a South East Asian school for homeless children (most likely will be in either Philippines or Taiwan).

But I'm concerned about temperatures. Possible average room temperature in those asian countries is around like 35C. Currently my room temperature averages at 25C, and processor is running loaded at 68C and idle 52. So I can't really imagine this being out there running well.

If so, all I have to change is just the Mobo and the CPU, and just have Windows XP reactivated for it (if needed).

540 heats up worse for sure.....

and thats a really nice thing you are doing, I salute you good sir

Interestingly enough, the 540 max thermal dissipation is 84w, while the X2 3800's is 89w. Although the later P4's have a reputation for high heat dissipation, I don't think 5w will make any real difference.

You might realize better processor temps by putting in a better than stock quality heatsink, and larger fan.

Extremely nice gesture of you. How does one get into that sort of program, just out of curiousity?

The TDP that intel uses isn't "MAXIMUM HEAT DISSIPATION" as some would expect...

It's the maximum dissipation at certain parts on the chip, under certain conditions... It's a guideline, not an absolute.

Local community church. The local chapel priest is a good family friend and has done funding and charity in Asian countries, he is a part of a licensed organization. Honestly, I'm not a very Godly person, but I also do voluntary work for the church... repairing their computers.

2 of my computers before this 540 PC was also sent out for donation 2 years ago, 1 of which went to African children's school, the other I gave to a family (cousin who started college back then) in to the Philippines.

eBay it is then. Hopefully it won't cost me over 150 Euro for a used X2 3800 and an mATX board.

100% agree, seen this first hand the 540 is like a toaster compared to the X2

People should experience the 540's before they worry about there C2D running at a puny 65C lol.

get an EE (energy efficient) X2 3800+, or you can probably just manually set a lower voltage on a regular X2 3800+. Just stress test it at the lower voltage to be sure its stable.

I will try to find an EE version but I doubt it in this country where I live in. I may underclock the regular X2 3800, that should also reduce their electricity bills out there.

Before you underclock it, try lowering the voltage only, and testing for stability. Lowering the voltage can reduce the wattage (heat & $) faster than lowering the clock.

Will do that then first, thanks for info !

Honestly, considering you probably arent giving them a wicked vid card and ram, and since they wont be doing gaming right? they would probably be perefectly happy with something like a sempron 3000 lol

Everything original, except for a different Mobo and CPU, including all other parts like the generic 6600 PCIe VGA, 2 GB of PC3200 RAM and 160GB HDD.

No Sempron, I lived a 1 month life of Sempron world and I wanted to commit suicide because of that, good thing it was just a temporary solution.

I want a donation that will at least last a year and hopefully longer... I don't know I just don't want it to be a useless computer after just a couple of months. Although I was told they are looking for computers for good media playback.
