I'm looking for a new psu. Price is no concern. But I do require it to be sleeved and has removeable connectors.

But the issue is. on my motherboard A8N-sli, there's a 24 pin input. But after researching a bit, found out that i can just plug my 20 pin in to the first 20 slots. and it seems to be working fine. Anyone know if this will cause a problem?

If so, I need to get a 24 pin i guess.

Tagan modular..
Hiper modular..
OCZ ModStream or PowerStream
Enermax Liberty

.. come up a lot, not much to choose between them as far as I can tell.

On Dave's behalf: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1000883

On my own behalf: http://www.jonnyguru.com/ratethebrands.html

Needs updating. Want to bump FSP up to Blue and add Andyson (Aerocool Turbine, Hiper Type-R) with the caveat that they do not do high wattage output without overheating to the list.

That said, my list of suggested modulars would be (from better to worse)....

Silverstone Strider 600W
Enermax Liberty (multiple wattage models)
Ultra X2 550W
Aerocool Turbine 450W or 550W (not recommended for really high wattage systems like P4's with SLI, so I'd just get the 450W)
Hiper Type-R 480W or 580W (not recommended for really high wattage systems like P4's with SLI so I'd just save my money and get the 480W)
Thermaltake TWV500
TTGI/Superflower Plug-N series (multiple wattage models)
ePower/Tagan Tiger/EasyCon 550W

EDIT: Powerstream is NOT modular and is not the same as a Modstream. Modstreams are based on Topower's P5 frame and the Powerstream is based on the P6.

Modular actually hurts your PSU performance - just ask Ice. If money is no object and you want the best, go for a PC Power & Cooling unit. I'm a true believer in them now after using many other "good" PSU's - I'm now a DACC member :p. Money should be no object when the PSU is one of the top pieces of hardware considered for a stable and high performing system.

You say "Just ask Ice". Sorry but who is Ice?

lack of modular is actually a plus not a con (order it to the length and number you want)
a guaranteed connection without added resistance and the potential for an "event"

fan noise is highly subjective, but in any event can be addressed to near silent if you so choose, the point here is that PSU manufacturers are constrained to offering a thermal solution within the confines of their own product, you arent, a duct some replacement fans and you can both increase the temperature differential and lower the noise signature while maintaining the static pressure and CFM

http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p...301&postcount=2

but its the electrical characteristics of the 510 youd choose it for
wide VAC, 1% load regulation, 0.5mV p-p, amp figures are at 50C unlike anything else your comparing it to

That one

:D

ahh, now I got ya :) . seen that post before now that you mention it.

Is there any data to verify/test the electrical resistance incurred by the modular connections? It makes sense that it would incur some measure of resistance, but I'd be curious to know how much...guess the only way to really know would be take measurements of the electrical current of a non-modular PSU, then mod that same PSU to be modular and do the same tests again? It would be very hard to emulate the factory moulation techniques/precision (or lack thereof)....good litte quest for someone who is so inclined.

Thanks. Now that it's on your radar, I should go update it. :D

Oops... I've got to publish that Aspire review too tonight.

Oh well... that's cool. Got a four pack of Grolsch liters today, so I've got fuel for the evening.

Ok, I ran out to the store today and bought the NeoHE550, but seems to have issues with my motherboard.

(is it normal to hear low buzzing noise from the psu?)

So I'm going to return it tomorrow, and place an order for the one recommended. (p&c power cooling 510).

So, I have 2 choices. Buy the custom modulated ones from performance-pcs for an extra $150-$200 more, or just purchase it directly from the company untampered.

It definitely degrades the quality of the psu if it's modular? If that's really the case, might as well save the $150 and get the standard one.

Also, do you guys recommend an e-tailer for me to place the order from? Or is it best that I order it from P&c directly.

Thanks alot guys.

I'm sorry to say, but a buzzing noise certainly isn't normal.

A Bit expensive and noisey for my liking, but certainly some of the most stable rails on the market. Of course, word on the CES floor is that PCP&C is discontinuing everything below the 650 and 1kW and are coming out with a line of lesser expensive, 120MM cooled, dual rail units.... I'd wait to see that.

Personally, I don't think modulars create enough potential resistance to warrant completely avoiding them. But everyone has an opinion and a 750W load tester so you'll get all sorts of responses to that question. ;)

Performance PC's is a great place to deal with.

I placed the order last night. should be shipping out today.

So exactly how much noisier is this psu? Is it that bad?

Also, should I have waited for the dual rail ones instead? (I can still cancel my order) ^^
Total price I paid was $197. They had a sale going on at their site.

I would've loved to order the custom modular one from performance-pcs. but it doesn't seem to justify the $150+ premium.

Thanks so far for your informed responses Jonnyguru

that psu does look promising.. hmm.

I'm thinking if I should cancel the order from p&c and get this.
Since I have a $25 credit from neweg..

I'm kinda worried about the noise level on the p&c. I do know that it's a bit noisier, but I'm afraid how noisier it'll be. I don't want to get disturbed by the noise while working on a project or playing a game late nigh with low volume on speakers..

I've got the PCP&C 510sli in my recently built rig. I had read a few things saying it was noisy but I honestly can't hear it at all in my Antec P180. Really, the only thing I normally hear is the fan on my graphics card. I love the PSU and I think it may have been overkill for my needs, but I tried to get the best and I'm pretty sure I did. It is rock solid even though it is used. This is my first build though, so I can't really compare noise levels to other power supplies.

Thanks for your feedback cobrati.

I just spoke to a rep in P&C and he informs me that it is indeed a bit noisier than other psu. And in the end of february, they're going to release a much silent version with higher watts.

If I had heard this sooner, I probably would've just bought a cheap one to hold me down till end of Feb. But it seems that the item has already shipped out.

I love my PC P&C 510watt outside of the fact it is very noisy, but its well worth it to know its probably never going to be the cause of a problem in my system.

I had a concern for this as well, but after talking to the PCP&C rep about the 850 SSI being much quieter and more efficient, not to mention future proof for upgrading in the next 2-3 years, I knew it was the best choice for me.

I had them put a hold on the 510sli.
Don't think I can wait until end of february with my current bunk psu.

So I do need to place an order today.

Either I stick with the 510sli for approximately $210 or go with the Liberty ELT620AWT for $150 (after $25 newegg credit that I have).

Any suggestions? :(

PC Power & Cooling all the way. For the little price difference between that and the liberty I think its well worth it.

Well, I personally am an Enermax !!!!!!,

But if you do go PP&C, the quality is well known, I just think it's important that the Liberty not be dismissed as a very high quality PSU. I feel that it's a very "close" second to the PP&C. In addition, if you search the reviews on the Liberty, you'll find that the power ratings are at actual performance temperatures, an important factor that Enermax doesn't tend to point out but PP&C has as their mantra.

Many other makers have inappropriate temp ratings at their rated performance so the result is much lower inside your case.

So if the difference in price isn't significant (meaning that it's not a make or break for you), then PP&C is without a doubt the best. But if you want a very close second, that's quieter and also modular, then the Liberty is the way to go (and you save some cabage).

i have the 510 sli, it is noisy only when i have my side panel off outside of that i dont even notice it and the thing is ROCK SOLID when it comes to performance i've never had a better psu or had a better customer service i actualy got a person i was shocked it was amazing.

Does anyone know what is the difference between the Pcpower and cooling 510 turbo
SLI and Pcpower and cooling 510 turbo SSI?

thanks

Typo? Older power supply? Initially, the difference between an SLI and an SSI Was one had an 8-pin, the other had two PCI-e, etc. But now they're known as AG, XE, ASL.

The AG has the EPS and AUX connectors, the XE has an EPS and a P4 4-pin and the ASL has the EPS and a pair of PCI-e's.

IIRC, only the 850 and 1k are SSI (Server System Infrastructure EPS12V) compatible.

True Story. Do not look over the Liberty as it is also a good PSU, but for my money
I also chose the PC Power and Cooling 510. Win Win Situation, honestly.
