These quality brands are highly recommended,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a
Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI/Crossfire) Systems.

Class 1: These are the Best:

PC Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & ULTRA-QUIET SILENCER 610W & 750W),
Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12),
Corsair,
Silverstone (Zeus models ST56ZF, ST75ZF, and ST85ZF),
Etasis &
Zippy.

Class 2:

Antec,
Enermax,
Enhance,
Fortron (FSP),
Hiper (Type-M 670W & 730W & Type-R 730W)
I-Star,
Mushkin,
OCZ Technology,
PC Power & Cooling,
Seasonic,
Silverstone,
Sparkle,
Tagan,
Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!),
Vantec &
XCilo.

Class 3:

Hiper (Type-R 580W, 530W & 480W) &
Sunbeam

Seasonic has announced the release of their new M12 series, these will be available up to 750W.

Links to all of these fine manufactures websites & reviews are provided at the end.
The only precise way to choose a PS is to add up the maximum current (amperage)
draw for each individual rail and then provide at least an additional 20% for overhead.
All PS calculators use averages, they are not precise.
A 1000Watt PS is useless if that wattage is delivered on the wrong rail(s)!

All of the above are very good PSU's & are recommended.

My personal "BEST BANG for the BUCK" choices are:

$39: FSP Group (FSP) AX400-PN ATX12V 400W (Low to Midrange.)

$49: XClio GoodPower 500W (For 90%+ of All Modern PC's.)

$85: OCZ GameXStream 600W (Very Good Over-All SLI/Crossfire PSU.)

$150: Corsair 620W (My Favorite PSU for All Highend Gaming Stations!)

$199: PC P&C 750W (Quad & Uber SLI/Crossfire with ANY GPU's!)

One special note, if you require extreme quiet then the Seasonic S-12 430W/500W/600W were made for you.

DO NOT USE A 20 TO 24 PIN ADAPTOR WITH THE DFI N4 MOBOS!

ALL mobo manufacturers recommend native 24-pin ATX for their newer mobos.

These PSU's were/are designed for older systems where the CPU is often powered from the +5V rail.
However these still provide enough +12V amperage to run most of today's lowend to midrange systems.

UPDATE: October 20th, 2006:

This list of recommended power supplies only applies to hardware available in North America and tested by DFI-Street.

ExRoadie

Enermax Liberty 620w PSU is no longer on our recommended list. Way too many issues with this power supply. DO NOT BUY TO USE ON DFI SYSTEMS!

Also note we've added the Corsair HX-620 (620w) psu and I can honestly say it is EXTREMELY recommended as a top psu, and we've added 3 Antec units, and a Hiper unit!

DFI-Street.com Certified (ie: HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION)

OCZ GameXStream OCZ600GXSSLI ATX12V 600W Power Supply
(personally tested by Happy_Games. This and the OCZ 700w GX are my two favorite psu's!)

OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply
(current top-rated, top-recommended psu by Happy_Games and majority of the forum!)

FSP Group (Fortron Source) Epsilon FX600-GLN ATX12V/ EPS12V 600W Power Supply

FSP Group (Fortron Source) Epsilon FX700-GLN ATX12V/ EPS12V 700W Power Supply

Corsair HX620w ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 620W Power Supply (Active PFC)
(quickly becoming Happy_Games' favorite psu. Modular, strong rails, low-heat, nearly silent...excellent excellent unit!)

PC Power & Cooling TURBO-COOL 1KW-SR SLI, EPS12V, SSI 1000W Power Supply 90 - 264V

Antec True Power Trio TP3-650 ATX12V 650W Power Supply with Three 12V Rails
(personally tested by Happy_Games...excellent choice for X1900 Crossfires / 7900 SLI's!)

These PSU's are all very very capable of powering up the latest 7900GT and 7900GTX SLI, 7950GTX, X1800XT and X1900XT Crossfire, AMD AthlonX2/Opteron Dual Core cpu's, and ALL current DFI motherboards including the following:

DFI Lanparty NF4 series original
DFI Lanparty NF4 Expert
DFI Lanparty NF4 Venus
DFI Lanparty RDX200 (ATI)
DFI Lanparty CFX3200-DR (ATI)
DFI Lanparty future AMD socket AM2 motherboards of all chipset flavors
DFI Lanparty future Intel Conroe motherboard of all chipset flavors

ALL CURRENT DFI MOTHERBOARDS AND ANY DFI MOTHERBOARD FOR AT LEAST ONE MORE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THIS POST UNLESS SOMETHING DRASTIC CHANGES IN POWER REQUIREMENTS!

These are very reliable psu's that are more than capable of doing the job.

Notice that the top 4 are almost identical (the OCZ and Fortron/FSP psu's). They are all manufactured by Fortron, and are the highest recommended psu's in the forum as they have the largest user base, and the least amount of complaints.

I always recommend the OCZ psu's since we have a few OCZ reps in this forum who have always been more than willing to help out mutual customers (and they have even helped out non-OCZ customers!). The only real difference between the OCZ and FSP power supplies is the OCZ psu's have a blue LED fan, and the Fortron psu's do not have any LED fans.

And finally, the 850w PCP&C psu. Everyone should by now know that PCP&C is the maybe the top name in power supplies...but you pay a premium for them.

The 510w version is extremely solid, but we simply cannot recommend it for the highest high end setups like those mentioned above. For that, you want to have any of the psu's on this list, including the PCP&C for your ultimate power needs. If you can afford this thing, you definitely want it.

Again, if you want a solid power supply that is reliable, trustworthy, and a growing majority of the users here are turning to, choose one of the OCZ GamerXstream power supplies. My personal favorite is the 700w (see the sig of Happy_Games)

OCZ BleedinEdge Support Forum

Andy@OCZ
Ryder@OCZ
Tony@OCZ
Marcus@OCZ (EU)
All of the above are EXCELLENT PSU's & are THE MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My personal choice for the most demanding systems is the Corsair HX 620W from only $150!

If you are NOT running UBER SLI/CF, then the Corsair HX 520W is my #1 choice from only $105!

If you have the bucks ($549!), the new PC P&C 1KW-SR (Single Rail: +12V@72A) is one of "THE BEST PSU's MADE".

My personal choice for "BEST BANG for the BUCK" is the OCZ GXS 600W for about $85!

One special note, if you require extreme quiet the the new Seasonic M-12 600W/700W should be available soon!.

OCZ PowerStream 600W WARNING: The OCZ Powerstream 600w is a fantastic power supply but it is NOT recommended for X1900XT/7900GTX or newer Crossfire/SLI. Avoid if you plan on using them in X1900XT Crossfire or 7900GTX SLI, or any newer Crossfire/SLI setup! Other than this particular combination (Crossfire X1900 / SLI 7900 or newer), the OCZ 600w Powerstream is a fantastic psu and is highly recommended.

My personal choice for "BEST BANG for the BUCK" is the OCZ GXS 600W for about $85!
These quality brands offer "known good" PSU's,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a

Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI) Systems.

Our Most Recommended PSU: OCZ Technology GameXStream 600W/700W

Class 1: These are the Best: PC Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & ULTRA-QUIET SILENCER 610W & 750W), Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12), Corsair, Silverstone (Zeus models ST56ZF, ST75ZF, and ST85ZF), Etasis & Zippy.

Class 2: Antec, Enermax, Enhance, Fortron (FSP), Hiper (Type-M 670W & 730W & Type-R 730W), I-Star, Mushkin, OCZ Technology,
PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic, Silverstone, Sparkle, Tagan, Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!), Vantec & XCilo.

Class 3: Hiper (Type-R 580W, 530W & 480W) & Sunbeam.

Unless we specifically recommend a PSU, please do not buy it,
as we only recommend PSU's that we have actually tested with DFI mobos!

Cheap, but Good Power Supplies!

My personal "BEST BANG for the BUCK" choices are:

$39: FSP Group (FSP) AX400-PN ATX12V 400W (Low to Midrange)

$49: XCLIO GOODPOWER 500W ATX 500W (Midrange to Highend)

$63: Antec SP2 500W Modular (Midrange to Highend)

$61: Enermax 535W (SLI-Certified)

These are all known good PS's, with many very good reviews, from companies you can trust. :)

You can spend alot more, but these WILL get the job done, everytime! ;)
These PSU's were/are designed for older systems where the CPU is often powered from the +5V rail.
However these still provide enough +12V amperage to run most of today's lowend to midrange systems.

In my opinion the Antec Neo HE 500W for about $80 represents by far the best value.

The Antec SP-500 has been removed due to quality control problems.

In this section of the PS Guide you will find testimonials from members of various forms
who have seen a big improvenment in performance by replacing their PS.

Please add your's to to the end of this guide & I will either copy them or link them.

Because there were only 22a on +12v rail, and it was underpowering my video slightly, so under load (like hl2 with lots of lights) it would slow down, and lag.

With the new PSU, there is no more lag in the same spot.

At least that's my guess, because the lag started when I put in the Prescott (more power), and up until today, was lagging. The only that changed between the last laggy time, and the now non-laggy time was the PSU...so I just assume that's the reason.

Could be wrong, but I think I'm right.... [PC P&C 510 Deluxe]

I've got an asus A8N with a couple of 6800GTs. Measured from the wall outlet the power draw is around 300W. I've tried the system with a number of PSUs. An Antiec Neopower 480 wouldn't run it without crashes. An OCZ520 would. I'm now using it with an OCZ 600, which absolutely rocks! Looks good, the sleeve cables are easy to get neat, and it seems absolutely rock solid. I know it is always best to mesure voltages with a DMM, but I'm going to post a link to a screenshot of Asus probe, taken after looping 3DMark05 for a while...

link

It just did not move! with any other PSU I've used (The ones mentioned above + Antec 480 Trueblue), there will always be a slight 'wiggle' in the line, denoting small variances... I post this out of suprise at a dead straight line!

BTW been meaning to say it for a while:

Good job Davidhammock200!

Well, here's my testimonial - way back when I built my first system, a Duron 700 on a MSI K7T Pro 2A, I was ignorant of PSU quality. I used the 250w PSU that came with my case. You'd think that being an electronics tech would have made me more careful, but I was going to learn this one the hard way. Those of you who know what PSU's normally come with Foxconn cases probably know where this is heading ;)

I tried everything I could to overclock the D700 to the speeds I knew other people were getting from theirs, and only got it to about 750 reliably. 800 could be acheived, with very little stability. As time passed, it got worse and I had to go back to 750 or less. Then, my Western Digital 45gb died for the first time. Thought it was the drive, so I RMA'd it. Replacement died. The light dawned, and I pulled the PSU out of there. The label proclaimed it of US-Can manufacture, but the back panel had the word "DEER" stamped right into the metal. I opened it up, and saw that all output filter caps were bulging and leaking. The PCB under one resistor and a nearby mosfet was burned almost black. I was later to find that not even the big main filter caps were still good in there (tried to use them in a repair).

Thanking my lucky stars I hadn't lost the new Maxtor drive I'd just bought, I grabbed a Channel Well 420w PSU and tried the overclocking again. Got the D700 to 900 this time, and there it stayed nice and stable until my upgrade to nForce2 and the Barton.[Channel Well makes the Antec's under contract]

Here is some feedback to this excellent guide.

A few years back when I bought my existant PSU (Antec TruePower 380W ver 1) I read through guides like this, but none this thorough.

I just wanna share a succes story of why buying a good PSU can really pay off:

I Was at a LAN and the power BRIEFLY shut down, like for a split second, and all of my friends PCs rebooted. Except mine. :) I guess this has something to do with Hold Up time. All hail Antec! :)

My Next will be a PSU with adjustable rails though.
The Fortron Source Blue Storm ax500A is such a fine power supply that we were able to witness a huge improvement in overall system performance, overclockability, and stability. Our A64 test bed proved to be a bit finicky about wanting to be overclocked until we took out the tired old TT 480W, and put the AX500A in its place. As if a miracle took place we no longer had any of the problems such as BSOD's, and an unstable overclock. I had no idea that a power supply, much less a 20W improvement would have that kind of impact. What it all comes down to is quality, and the AX500-A reeks of it. Its almost like owning a weapon with its weight and quality. The funny thing is that it doesn't look any better than the TT 480W on paper, but it really did cure all our overclocking woes! Simply Amazing!

Voltages & Amperage: Only the +3.3V, +5V & +12V are used by modern computers. Spec is usually +/- 5%. When the original ATX spec was written the +3.3V & +5V were far more stressed by heavy usage demands than they are in today’s computers. Almost any high quality ATX spec PS of 300Watts or more can supply far more +3.3V & +5V amperage than today’s computers require. Today’s computers, especially the AMD A64’s and the latest Intel P4’s stress the +12V rail the most, requiring far more amperage than was originally called for in the original ATX spec for the +12V rail.

Wattage: Voltage times Amperage equals Wattage. Wattage is the ability to do work; it can be converted into Horse Power. A PS’s wattage rating is the total combined wattage output of all the rails combined. Older ATX designs created most of their wattage in the +3.3 & +5V rails, creating very little on the +12V rail. Newer ATX12V & ATX12 V2.0 designs are creating ever more wattage on the +12V rail, to meet the needs of today’s & tomorrow’s computers.
To see why total wattage should never be used to select a power supply, but that the properly allocated wattage is very important in selecting the proper PS, please click on the following link to the ONLY "Power Supply Calculator" that I can & DO RECOMMEND, provided by & constantly updated by "mnemonik23": http://www.extreme.outervision.com/

Dual +12V Rails: Most PS’s today supply all of their +12V amperage through one rail, just like almost every PS manufacturer supplies their +3.3V and +5V through one rail each. However some forward thinking manufacture’s are supplying their +12V amperage through more than one rail, the most common today for PC’s is to use two +12V rails or dual rails. The new ATX12 V2.0 spec. also requires dual (or more) +12V rails.

Why more than one +12V rail? Electrical isolation for noise and improved voltage regulation. Some devices, usually electromechanical ones having motors, produce noise spikes & voltage fluxuations, these can include pumps, compressors, fans, drives, lights (when turned on & off) and probably TEC’s & Peltiers. By putting these “noisy” devices, that often turn on & off, or at least often change their power (amperage) demands, on a separate rail we isolate them from the MoBo, CPU, Video Card(s) and the other electronic components that are sensitive to noise & sudden changes in voltage. This is a good thing! ATX12 V2.0 is the future. Additional Information: http://www.ssiforum.org/Power Supplies/EPS12V_Spec 2_1.pdf (PDF)

Hold Up Time: Measured in milliseconds (ms) is how long the PS will continue to supply in spec voltage & amperage, once the AC input voltage is removed. The longer the hold up time generally the higher the quality of the PS. Hold up time gives the time necessary for an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to switch to batteries and allow uninterrupted operation of the computer.

Efficiency and Temperature: There are no electronic devices that are 100% efficient & PS’s are no exception. Typically PS’s operate between 60% and 70% efficiency. The more efficient the PS, the less power that is lost as heat and the lower the cooling requirements. Newer PSU's meeting the ATX12V 2.xx specs have efficiency ratings from 70% to as high as 85%. The Antec Phantom's & the Seasonic S-12's are 80%+ efficient.

Reading and Adjusting Voltages: BIOS and software such as Motherboard Monitor 5 (MM5) can not be fully trusted to give accurate voltage readings and since many of today's better PS's allow the user to easily adjust their voltages, it is very important that a voltmeter/multimeter be used to measure these voltages correctly.

PFC: Power Factor Correction: This has always been important for large scale commerical applications,
now it is something that the home & small office user can also consider,
especially if you are going to be operating outside of north america.

These quality brands are highly recommended,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a
Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI) Systems.

PC Power & Cooling (PC P&C): 1% Regulation, Adjustable Rails & 5yr warranty.
OCZ PowerStreams: 1% - 2% Regulation, Adjustable Rails & 5yr warranty.

Antec (except Smart Power) & Zippy: Tight Regulation & 3yr warranty.

Hiper, OCZ ModStreams, Seasonic: 3yr warranty.

Antec (Smart Power), Cooler Master, Enermax, Fortron,
Sparkle, Tagan, Vantec & XClio: Known Good Quality often at Low Prices.

My personal "BEST BANG for the BUCK" choices are:

$40: Fortron 400W (For Lowend to Midrange PC's)

$52: XClio 450BL 450W (For 95%+ of All Modern PC's)

$79: Enermax 535W SLI-Ready (For SLI & DFI N4 mobos)

$125: OCZ PowerStream 520W (The Best All-Round PSU Available.)

$219: PC P&C 510 Express/SLI (THE BEST PC PSU EVER MADE!)

Now if you have the bucks the PC P&C's & the OCZ PowerStreams are the VERY BEST AVAILABLE!

One special note, if you require extreme quiet then the Seasonic S-12 430W/500W/600W were made for you.

These PSU's were/are designed for older systems where the CPU is often powered from the +5V rail.
However these still provide enough +12V amperage to run most of today's midrange systems.
