hi guys, im new here and i hope i am posting in the correct place.

i am planning on buying a core i7 920 bundle on the internet but dont know what power supply to use, i have seached the forums and they keep saying to go for a corsair or some other model but they are £100+. i can get the motherboard and CPU for £180 - £200 and dont have the money to buy an expensive PSU.

i have been looking at a few mainly

http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=PSO-500SX2
http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=PSE-800INF

it is only going to be a core i7 920 "not overclocked" and 12Gb or memory, i dont want to SLI the computer and am not going to be running silly ammounts of drives or fans so any pointers would be great.

i would have about £50 or £60 to spend on a PSU.,

cheers
kenny

Neither PSU are that great. What video card will you be using?

Also you're kinda getting ripped off if you're paying £200 for that old CPU and motherboard as you can get the faster, significantly lower power, and cool running Core i5 3450 + Z77 motherboard for £230 inc VAT:
http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=CPI-I53450
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-...-sata-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-dvi-d-hdmi-atx

Just the low power usage alone makes the 3450 worth it over the i7 920.

well i dont really know what one to get, im not much of a gamer but i do run lots of virtual machines ect. i must admit that i have been looking at a core i5 or even the bulldozer range from amd.

the only game that i do play is GTA IV but that takes up alot of resources from what i hear so i dont know. What would you recommend?

Not good at all.

Actually, that particular Thermaltake TR2 Bronze model is better than previous TR2-labeled PSUs. It is based on an improved FSP Epsilon 85 Plus platform. Still, there are better PSUs at the price that particular TR2 Bronze 700W unit sells for (which IMHO is quite a bit too high for its quality).

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular .

Try Modular if there is anyway possible, you will be glad you did in the long run.

I wouldn't bother with OCZ, most of their units are over rated. Seasonic and Corsair seem to be consistantly high quality. A Corsair CX500 or 600 should do you fine. The S12 series from Seasonic should also be good, 520+ watts. The Antec Neo 520 would be good too. If you want something awesome, grab the LZP-550 from Kingwin, pricey, but awesome.

thanks for all your great responces. i have been looking around at different builds and i can get a i7 2600k, asrock H61M-VS and 8gb of ddr 3 memory for £300.

would it be safe to use a winpower 550w psu that i already have for 1 month till i get paid again then i would buy a decent antec psu.

the board will again not have SLI or anything fancy just 1 hard disk and 1 dvd drive.

using one of the calculation websites i would only be consuming about 350w so would have afew watt's left over

2600k + H61 is pointless. You can't OC with H series chipsets. You need a P or a Z series chipset.

i dont intend to overclock yet, i just want to get the computer up and running then i will upgrade my motherboard at a later date after i have upgraded the psu

Quick question on power supplies...

whats the difference between a 650 watt PSU 80+ certified with 1 12 volt rail and high amperage (like 62a)

and a 650 watt 80+ cert with 4 12 volt rails with 18 amps each....

what difference does it make and what kind of system is better for which?

No on the Winpower 550W. It can barely handle even 300W without exploding itself and potentially killing off some or all or your system's remaining parts. You see, that PSU is an HEC-made unit that's of an old, low-quality design that's relatively low in efficiency to begin with.
