Building a new system.

Q6600
4GB Corsair Dominator 1066
GTX 260
ASUS P5Q Pro

Will be doing video encoding, web browsing, gaming.

What should I buy?

If you don't already have an operating system there's no reason not to just get Vista Home Premium 64-bit to take advantage of your RAM. Make sure your preferred video encoding software will work on 64-bit Vista though.

any reason to go ultimate over vista home premium 64?

If you need the business functions such as domain login and Bitlocker, or if you want the Ultimate Extra (Dreamscene) there's no reason to get Ultimate.

Aside from the Business function and Ultimate Extras there's pretty much nothing Home Premium 64 can't do.

The only reason I'm using Ultimate 64 myself is because it was free. I got it from the Windows Feedback Program earlier this year.

Azhar is 100 percent correct from what I have been told by many hardforum people.

I sound like a newb but ive built many computers before, just used my retail xp pro from back in the day. BUT, what is really the difference between the OEM home premium on newegg and a retail version?

OEM is tied to a single machine. Once you install it and activate it, it belongs to only that machine.

Retail on the other hand can be used on multiple machines (one at a time of course). Ideal if you're a frequent and heavy upgrader.

Off the record: most people have had success reactivating OEM versions on new machines by calling it in rather than using the online activation mechanism. But if price is not a factor and you cannot be bothered to call Microsoft when you're changing machines, go with Retail. If you plan on using the same machine and buy Windows 7 in a year or so, no reason not to save money and go with OEM.

I'm running x64 XP on my workstation only because I tend to stay away from Vista as much as I can. Damn them for changing Windows Explorer. :) Maybe w/ the 'fixes' they're working on for Windows 7 (aka. Windows ME v2 RC2 hah) I'll make the switch down the road.

Windows ME.

For people that post these threads when this has been discussed TO DEATH, I'm just going to recommend whatever I want. Yeah I'm a dick.

Windows 3.11. I know Microsoft discontinued it this year (Seriously, google it.) But you aint gonna find anything better!

I kid, I kid.

I couldn't get Vista 64bit to work with my Q6600, but then again I never tried, and I get Vista for free from my school.

Vista 64 Business

odd. Sounds like a MB issue then, because I've installed it on at least 2 systems with a q6600 (wern't mine)

64 Bit Windows 3.1 as mentioned. I think newegg has a deal on it.

Why buy when there is open source? Sorry, had to throw that out there.

Call me when a major developer starts making linux versions of thier games.
Don't get me wrong I like linux and use it on some pcs. But for a main OS, its not for me,
not yet.

Nor I, but the majority of what the original poster described, without divulging specific games, can indeed be done in an alt OS.
Honestly, you knew someone would throw that out there. Not saying it's the perfect answer, but it is still there.

If an honest opinion is needed, this is a trivial question that has been posted to begin with.

I could've sworn there was a search feature on this forum.

Yep, there is. Pretty good one too!

Helps people like CRLane and myself find stuff we know exists, pretty damned quickly. Good thing that, because when inexperienced folk come asking questions it's more likely than not because they aren't too comnfortable with using search facilities or picking out what are the best search terms to use. If they were, they'd more likely than not have found answers using Google, wouldn't they, and not have had to come here asking?

Seriously, takes less effort than looking to not post if help's not gonna be offered.

It very well could be. I have an XFX 680i LT SLI Motherboard.

Also, looking in the Environment Variables in the Properties of My Computer shows the Processor_Architecture to be x86

Agree to disagree. ;)

Video encoding/editing?

VISTA 64 Premium, 8Gb of RAM. I'm doing alot of encoding/editing with gigantic AVCHD video files and 8Gb is a god send.

Because Open source doesn't mean you it can meet all your needs. Especially if gaming is one of the uses. Linux is a fine thing, but It still has many hills to climb.

As for the original question. Vista 64 Business is my first suggestion unless the Media Center application is absolutely required. It's about $40 more for the OEM version over Home Premium, but Shadow Copy/Previous Versions are more than worth it IMHO.

I honestly don't know why people overlook this feature when making the decision. For me it's such a useful feature I can't see why people wouldn't strongly consider it.
