I have been out of the hardware loop for a while, looking at purchasing a dual quad core computer, wondering which is better, AMD or Intel for Video/3D Rendering?
 
Intel is fastest I think from all benchmarks etc. but that is not taking into account any speed/price ratio. If just talking about raw speed Intel wins hands down.

if your software will support that hardware it would be a monster.

Look very carefully at the chipset features. A dual socket i7 family (or Xeon) would be the way to go for top of the line. Most of them are server class boards and support a limited number/class of CPU. For example you need an Intel CPU with 2 QPI links for dual socket. (I think, I am not up on it as well as I used to be).

But if money is no object and raw performance is the primary concern I am pretty certain Intel cannot be beat at the moment and near future.
