Which is better for GPU? Full cover or GPU Block + ramsinks?

Not sure about the GPU block and ramsinks, but I can tell you my temps with the Danger Den blocks on 8800 GTXs in SLI.

Ambient room temp 21-22c

Idle
------------
62c/62c on stock air
50c/45c on water

- Once loaded on air they won't come back down to 62, tend to hover between 65-70, probably because of the increase in case temp. On water however they will drop back to the original temps.

Load
------------
85c/85c + on stock air
55c/47c on water

As this is a full coverage block would imagine that it would perform better. The block covers pretty well every chip on the card.
 
The real issue is, does the full cover block actually engage the memory chips in a usefull fashion. Many leave a gap of a mm or more, too much for AS5 or other thermal paste to effectively bridge the gap, so to speak. This then requires the use of thermal pad, gap bridge material, with reducted thermal conductivity compared to AS5 and an good mechanical fit.

With a gap, I am guessing ram sinks with some airflow. With a properly designed full cover block with a proper retention mechanism that provides proper contact and clamping force to both the GPU and the memory chips, I would go with that over the ramsinks mainly because they look so damn sexy.

edit, with the price of full cover blocks, IMO (and I been wrong plenty of times) a GPU block and ram sinks save ya a bunch of cash and work %99.942 as well if properly installed. Its what I did, glued ramsinks on with artic epoxy and put a slot fan card under it on super low speed to feed them air. http://mysite.verizon.net/ressdxka/id3.html
Never did go back and clean up the wiring.

edit again, same concern with the voltage requlator chips or whatever else is hot and under the full cover sink. If the block is not touching it aint coolin it worth a darn.
 
Ya, full coverage blocks are a bit pricey. I think I've got my chips coverered, used a combination of paste and thermal pads. The 8800 block from DD came with thermal pads as well.
 
You really don't need a full cover block unless you are worried about the power stage on your card. GPU memory is hardly warm when the core is properly cooled.
 
With the 8800s id rather have a full coverage job, only one std block fits and you still have to cool the vrms and i/o chip, not to mention all the ram chips.

I've got an MCW60 + ramsinks...

That extra RAMDAC on the side GETS SO F*CKING HOT!!! I made a HSF for it out of some old aluminum.
 
I don't know about other series full covereage blocks, but Danger Den's 8800GTX's full blocks are manufactured to outstanding specs. I did a test fit the first time to see if the block was engaging the ramsinks and power sections, and it is making 100% contact! :eek:

Temps are also outstanding and the flow is rediculous! The quality of workmanship into these blocks is what sold me on Danger Den. My entire rig is now using their products.
 
This makes me wish that I could find that thread where someone posted pics of the DD 8800GTX block's internals... :rolleyes:

And what exactly is wrong with that? I see nothing that leads me to believe it's of inferior quality or workmanship? My temps are dramatically lower and it performs great! :D

did you read the link I posted? Very poor machine work on the internals from a professional company.

I guess if you're LOOKING for a reason to not like Danger Den, then you can certainly find them. :eek:

Yeah. There's always a reason to hate a company for something. I hate DD for their prices ;).

The block internals arn't bad really. They're well designed, but the manufacturing is only "good" and not "great."

Has everyone forgotten about all the loose metal chips in the Swiftech blocks? The apogee, storm, MCW60 (and 55)? Their diamond arrays were plagued with tiny pieces of copper.

Yeah I can totally respect that. What cracks me up about these DD haters is they're showing pictures of "good" machining and looking for faults. Fact is, my temps on my OVERCLOCKED 8800GTX's are excellent! 48*C idle, 55*C load in SLI with 630core, 2000MHz memory overclock. Man..I guess these things really junk. *rollseyes*

I don't find their prices bad at all either, but thats just my humble opinion.
 
I can't find the link at the moment, but I saw a review not to long ago that had the Innovatek full coverage G80 all aluminum block outperformed the all copper EK series.

If you are happy with your dangerden gear then that's all that matters. Going from stock cooling to water is going to give you a great improvement in temps even on a shoddy block, and if 48-55C makes you happy then more power to you.

However, I hear plenty of reports that people with EK blocks are getting around 40-45C so it isn't like there isn't room for improvement. And it is a FACT that those blocks contain shoddy workmanship. You really can't argue that because the pictures don't lie. Sure the block performs better than stock air cooling, but it could get several degrees lower if it was re-engineered and machined correctly.
