Which Headphones?

O man you guys aren't kidding when you say the non-pro Fatal1ty set sucks. When my dad returned the Plantronics set a Fry's guy recommended the Fatal1ty's, and since I wasn't there (and for some reason the guy gave us his employee discount) my dad bought them. General sound quality ain't too bad, decent bass. But the positional audio is absolutely terrible on them. A guy is back or front left of me, sounds like he's directly left. Sure I may be only using a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card, but I can get some pretty nice positional audio from those Sony's I mentioned earlier. Plus the mic doesn't even work. I think you know where this set is going. Made me nervous too since I had already gone ahead and bought a set of SB40s off of Amazon without mentioning anything
 
I’m pretty set on getting some beyerdynamics DT 770s. Positional audio for fps and sound quality is important to me. Right now I have a 5.1 medusa pro gamer Headset witch I love for the positional audio their iffy on sound quality, but they are crapping out right now and I’m looking at sending them in on warrantee.

So it boils down to me having 2 questions about the DT 770s.
1. Will they sound ok plugged into my x-fi gamer or do I need to also get a dac or something?
2. is its positional audio all it’s cracked up to be? I’m wondering how much difference there will be from 5.1 to 2.1.
 
1. They could use an amp/dac like the Zero. If you are on a budget, an ebay/head-fi cmoy amp will the trick. You need an amp to get control of the bass especially.

2. 2 channel with better headphones, an external dac and maybe an amp is better for directional sound. Straight out of the x-fi, the koss sb40 should give you better sensitivity to sounds as to near/far and left right but perhaps not quite as much in terms of sounds behind left or forward right. With a better dac, like the zero or zhalou, you will hear those sounds clearly.

Only get the 770 if you want bass. If you want directional 3D, and I mean 3D sound, try the AKG 601 instead. It forms this crazy little bubble around each ear and you can pick the sounds out of the air literally. Bass impact is sacrificed for this effect but I generally used a sub when I wanted to jam. Oh, you don't have to have an amp for the 601 either but it really helps to have at least a $100 unit. I really like the Zero dac/amp atm. You can get one modded for around $150 these days.

Better order the zalman mic too. Unless you want to use your TB as a mic lol. The Koss mic really can be terrible. You won't want to take them off though lol.

Creative headphones suck. Always.

as long as you get the 80 ohm version you are golden!
i have the dt770/80 and an x-fi gamer and these will thump with bass! positional sound on any 3d sound game supported by the x-fi will blow away a 5.1 headphone setup. pm me if u need pics of settings
 
Anyone ever heard the K501? I read in one review on head-fi between the K501, K601, and K701, that the K501 actually had a larger soundstage than BOTH of the other headphones... but when just listening to music it's hard to tell if that would translate into gaming.
 
The 501 is an amazing headphone. I would say that it has more "air" but not as precise imaging or directional sound as the newer models. This is especially true in the 3D areas of "up left", "below right", etc. Just not quite as tight and precise in those terms. However, it is still damn good.
 
I've been thinking of picking up a pair of AD700's for gaming and music other than rock. But I'm thinking of some DIY first, maybe an Alien DAC with a Cmoy, Pimeta, or the "Starving Student" Millet Hybrid Tube amp.... they all sound so tempting, hehe.

Anyone gamed on something like an Alien DAC with an amp? Obviously you will lose EAX but gain a ton of sound quality. I'm thinking of getting all the parts together just for a Cmoy to see if it improves the sound quality of my laptop's audio out at all. But yes I know the saying... garbage in, garbage out :eek:
 
with vista, x-fi doesn't matter. sound quality for music is better with the alien but not much. you have to go up the ladder to a zhalou, zero, lite dac ah, etc to get better than the x-fi. you can mod the x-fi too you know.

i'm going to call these the best gaming headphones ever. made me sell my dt770s. great bass and sparkly highs.

lol. I know but they actually suck compared to Stax Lambda Normal bias + srd-7, about $300 + an amp. (just in comparison, they are great headphones!)

Hard to believe I know. Truth though.

And what about from Sigmatel HD Audio onboard? lol... yeah, I sold off my desktop a couple months ago and am using the laptop in my sig now, pretty nice machine, actually I should be receiving my T9300 processor today. 2.5ghz of 45nm powa!!

Anyway's, when I first bought the laptop I was considering buying the X-Fi audio thingy for laptops, but basically all it gives you is EAX4, right? I mean, there is no hardware acceleration, it's just software and maybe a bit better headphone amp? Nah.... I'd much rather get something that sounds better than give even more money to Creative.

And BTW, with the newer small form factor type XtremeGamer's, I'm not sure how moddable they are. I always thought that the moddable X-Fi's were the older Xtremegamer's and the Xtrememusic's. *shrug*

Edit: Oh yeah, my point was that an Alien DAC would probably be a pretty decent step above the onboard audio I have right now. I had actually ordered a HotUSB1, seemed like a decent DAC/Amp for $50, but after a month it never showed up so the seller refunded my money. I wasn't too heartbroken though... a little, because I wanted to see how much better it would be over onboard, but after doing some more research apparently even though the PCM2705 is a newer DAC, the older PCM2702 used in the Alien is still superior.

hahaha, not too hard to believe since you're paying at LEAST double, if not triple for those Stax ;)

I'm planning on getting some AD700's eventually. I figure I have some other headphones for music, KSC75's for rock, some surprisingly decent Razer M100's (yeah I know, shut up), but apparently same OEM of the Sennheiser CX300's. And I got them for only $8 bucks off of Buy.com when they had the sale on the white ones with Google Checkout :D, so shoot me. They have some fun bass that I like to use if I want some noise blockage. I figure the AD700's will be great for classical, and acoustic type music, as well as my gaming :D
 
$8? sure why not.

I would try the 501, 601 instead for classical. The 501 has a cavernous sound stage for classical. AKG is heavier and much harder in terms of ear pads (especially the 501) and build. the AT is much more like an ultralight earmuff. The 700 is still wonderful for classical though so you will not feel cheated either way.

601 for gaming is the closest thing to a stax btw. just less bass. ;)
 
Ok now this thread has me torn between the k601 and the DT 770.

So now I’m wondering the same questions about the 601. Will it run fine off of my x-fi gamer? I'm thinking of buying a cmoy off of ebay, but I would prefer and amp that doesn’t run off of batteries (while still being inexpensive).
 
I might consider K501 or K601, but unfortunately they both cost double the AD700 ;)

Oh well, who knows what the future holds, heh.
 
Anyone try out the E.D.G.E. Acoustics GX400? I've read a couple reviews and they've all been positive and it seems like they're awesome for gaming but not so much for music which is okay.
 
Well, got my SB40s today. Loads better than the Fatal1ty, though we all knew that. Not as much bass as I'd like, but nice clear sound, solid positional audio, and comfy (though left side padding isn't as much as the right so my ear is kinda pressed against the inner felt pad). Mic is actually decent, better than I expected based on what you guys said. Perhaps a touch crackly, but voice is pretty clear and it doesn't pick up too much background noise. Overall, definitely positive experience here :)

Cool. you can change the pads to beyers.I think fpshero did that? Bass gets better over time.

I got the SB40 today, and I'm not really that happy with it.

Audio quality is fine, but its just not all that comfortable. I guess I shouldn't expect much from a 30.00 headset, but I've had 10.00 headsets that I though were more comftorable to wear.

I guess I'll look into something else. I'll do some reading on some Mods people have done, and see what I can do.
 
How uncomfortable? The pads? Someone else said that his were uneven. If they are slacking on the build quality, send them back. You can get another pair for the price of shipping one way.
 
The pads aren't the best, but I can live with them.

Even at the biggest setting, the head strap don't seem big enough, so its a tight fit.

I guess I have a really big head.
 
I think you do, mine only goes about half-notched to be comfortable on me... and people say I have a big head too... of course that may not be referring to the physical size of my head :rolleyes:
 
Damn. I am 6'3" with a 7 3/4 hat size. You must have quite a melon lol. The clamping shpuld ease with use.Try leaving them on something which stretches them when not in use.
 
I(ts not the clamping force, the headband is a bit to short, so its tight in order to get the headphones where they should be.

Wow. Ok then. I believe you can replace the headband. Have not done it myself though with those. Just some old Beyers and Stax.
 
Thanks for recommendation, I ordered my sb40's from atlonline yesterday at 3:30 and they got here today at 12:30pm standard ground shipping!

It helps the warehouse was in PA and I live in VA!

Tried um on they fit like a glove, played first mp3 and GENIUS!!! I love them.

The ONLY issue I have is the well known Realtek analong MIC in issue with the sb40. That however is a realtek thing not the 'can's. I have gotten fussed at several times by my old lady because she's hollering at me when I'm downstairs and she's upstairs and I cannot hear her :)

So if anyone has a fix for the realtek hd mic in let me know.

Mic boost is not an avialable option (at all) and the mic sliders are greyed out.
 
Just received the Koss SB40s as well and I like them a lot. The sound quality is better and feels a lot "fuller" than my Altec Lansing $70 speakers... In games, there is zero static when it is completely silent and I can hear footsteps really well. They are also very comfortable to me, though I haven't used very many headphones, and it does feel somewhat small. I have what I would consider and average sized head and it is almost fully extended to fit.

The one part I am shaky on is the microphone. It is really lose in it's hole and shakes around alot. Plus it doesn't sound great and is really quiet. I have all the mic volumes on full and it is still very quiet.

If anyone has a DIY way to fix the shaky microphone that would be great. Like maybe how to disassemble it so I can wrap some tape around where it attaches.

Thanks for the recommendation, I would give them a 9/10 for the price.
 
ultrasone has their hs-15 headset b stock for 50.00$. has anybody heard these? they are small headphones but from a 'real' manufacturer.
 
I read what you said about the SB0 and using the Zalmon Clip but is their no other better choice >$150? I need a head set for gaming and the zalmon clip seems like it would be clumsy and that I would have to pull it towards my face to speak.
