Do you guys use headphones exclusively, or do you have speakers too? Just wondering, because I like the idea of getting rid of my Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 setup and rats nest of cables. Would I regret this if I started using headphones exclusively?

I use both. Speakers are better for music and movies and the Koss are better for gaming seriously. If I just want to have fun I use speakers but if it is competitive headphones.

I use speakers and headphones. My headphones are nicer and better sounding than my speakers but I don't always feel like using them. I wouldn't want to be without some form of speakers in addition to headphones

Speakers:
Klipsch PM4.1, AV123 XLS, Samson Resolv 65a
Headphones:
Sennheiser hd650, Sony mdr7509

Well my SB45's are ordered from the Egg  I unfortunately won't get them until Friday though because I live in Mexico and my "supplier" isn't leaving here for another hour and is getting back Friday

I'm excited though, I'm glad I came to check out the Computer Audio section, or else I may have ended up buying the Razer Sound card and 5.1 headphones for the "Deal" of $170 and thinking I was hardcore.... Thank you spaceman for showing me my ignorance :p

BTW, how's the bass on these cans?

Supposedly pretty good, a little veiled. It sounds like comfort is more of an issue (they're all clampy or some such?). Haven't tried 'em myself, but you'll be able to form your own opinions soon.

How does a Sennheiser HD600 compare to the recommendations in terms of positional audio? I have the HD600s with a Bithead amp but I'm wondering if different headphones would improve my FPS gaming (hopefully without sacrificing sound quality).

the positional audio comes more from the sound card- u probably want an x-fi. i have had several senns and the positional audio using the x-fi sound card has always been good

I use my dt250/80s exclusively. They're very comfortable (slightly smaller than the dt770, but big enough), but I can see why people would still prefer to vary with speakers now and then. It's not a problem, though; I doubt I'll be buying speakers anytime soon. And they do sound very good. :)

After a couple days with the SB45's, I like them. I finally found some decent drivers and the actual programs for Vista and my Audigy 2 ZS, had to download a CD Image that I found on Creative's message boards  So finally I actually have access to the EAX settings, CMSS, etc etc. I can play around with the bass now, and although it can't go too heavy before starting to sound distorted, it does sound pretty nice, and the headphones can go pretty decently loud and still sound excellent.

So music sounds pretty nice, I was expecting maybe a little more bass, but I think that just might be because I read the first post in this thread and was reading about the $100-$1,000 headphones which sound amazing, but then I remembered I only paid $30 for these and I feel better about it, especially since after breaking them in a bit they're starting to sound better. I first tried them on my intergrated sound with some music at work, and they were nice but not amazing. It wasn't until I took them home to use with the sound card and also the improved drivers helped that they really sound great. To test them in games unfortunately I haven't had much time to really play anything this weekend, but I did start up the Epilogue in COD4 because I love the way they did that mini-game and the music is great. They sounded awesome for games! I want to try and find some of my old Thief games just to see how good the positional audio with EAX is :p

I think my only complaint is that, although they did make a trip from the States to Mexico in my father's suitcase, the mic seems to wobble a bit. It doesn't happen in every position, but when it is in front of me and I move my head I feel the left part of my head kind of go *thump thump*. Definitely not a deal breaker, but slightly annoying. Still though, awesome headphones, I also recommend them to anyone looking for decent gaming cans.

Anyways, thanks for this thread spaceman, I'm happy with my purchase. I'm actually a little scared that I've stumbled upon this thread, because now I'm wondering what those Sennheiser headphones sound like, and what if I bought an X-Fi, and how much better these headphones might sound with an amp.... But I have so many other things to buy first :p Have to be content with these for now.

Best gaming headphones( position recognition is very important) in combination with a X-Fi XtremeMusic for CS1.6?
I read a lot of good stuff about the Beyerdynamic DT770Pro(the ones with 80ohm imp).
Now i own a pair of Sennheiser HD201 but these arent meant really for gaming.
Koss SB40/45 are in my country about 70$.

I would try the A700 from audiocubes. They ship internationally. Get the closed A700s for best positioning. The 770 are fun but not ideal for positioning. AKG 601s are very nice for positioning too. Probably too expensive though.

Even at $70 the Koss are very good btw.

These ones?.
Do you happen to know how much would it cost to send it to Eastern Europe(Romania exactly)?
Its rather nice that these are better than the DT770Pro because they also cost a lot less :D .
Thanks for the info

I just picked up the Audio Technica ATH-AD700's for $110 shipped at the egg...

I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy them, but I'll post my experiences when I get them.

You will love them-the AD700s are an Audio Technica gateway drug.

No. For rock music yes. For anything else no way. They are on ear, bright, small soundstage.

Get the AD700 I promise you will love them. They are HUGE compared to the SR-80.

How much of an upgrade is $80 to go from SB-45's to AD700's? Just for an idea of what I could consider in the future. On the first page you said the AD700's don't have a whole lot of bass. Is that still more than the SB-45's? Would it also just be more precise directional sounds? Clearer highs and mids?

BTW thanks again spaceman, you love your headphones :p

That is about right. For $80 or so you get a "bigger room with less clutter and noise."

Sorry spaceman to bug you but it seems that the A700s are out of production and the 2stores that deal with Audio Technica here said that there is no way i can get my hands on them.
A guy from one store recommended me the ATH-PRO700 SV at around 160euros(~234$).
If the A700 is such a big hit i will try to buy them from audiocubes.

Audiocubes should ship them to you. I would recommand you grab the ATH-A700 if you in a area where people are around you. and if your not. then the AD700.

They had them for $110 shipped...and I just checked yesterday evening (ordered early afternoon) and they are out of stock.

Yeah, they are still out of stock. I am probably going to pick up a pair as well. My question is, do I really need a amplifier? Will getting one make a huge difference?

not a huge difference no. if you want that. get a better source. the 700s do fine out of a soundcard which is why I say get 'em.

Alright, what does everyone think of getting some A900's for 150$, RP-21's for 75$, or keep shopping around for some used proline750's...or is there another option I'm missing? They would be mainly used for gaming and listening to rock, electronica and ska music. I like comfortable headphones, but I can sacrifice comfort for sound quality...not that I'm worried about that with these speakers :)

Cheers

the Prolines need an amp imo. Based on your music tastes I would get the rp-21.

I just pmed about the Rp-21's...but I've been reading that the stock pads for the Rp-21's are aweful, and that I should pick up some beyer pads to replace them. Would real leather be best, or pleather? Again sound quality is my first concern.

Cheers!

Yeah I am probably going to do the same thing. I don't know which is best yet. Check head-fi. Killer, cheap and portable!

How is this for a headphone selection/soundcard. I just built a new computer about a month ago, and wanted to hold off on a soundcard so I could do some more research, and not get stuck with a crappy one.

AD700
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826402014

For the soundcard I was looking into this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102006

My budget is 200.00 or so, but I don't mind going slightly over. For example, you guys talked me into getting an 8800GT, which is much more than I planeed to spend, but I couldn't be happier with it. If an additional 100.00 will be much much better than a 200.00 system, i would consier it, but if its marginally better, I would rather save the money.

Although I only have crappy 30.00 speakers right now, in the future (8 months or so), I plan to get some good speakers, and I don't want to have to replace a newer sound card, so I would rather get one that will handle a decent set of speakers down the road.

this will be used about 50% gaming, 20% movies, 30% music, so positional audio is very important.
