I was wondering which company has better controls and options for HDTV's? NVIDIA or ATI/AMD? Any help would be appreciated

You really cant say. The mix-n-match of TV's, connectors, drivers, os's, firmwares all play a part that can go wrong. But as far as custom resolutions, forced detection, gamma and color controls both Nvidia and ATI have you covered. Nowadays you'll have to provide your tv model, mobo (and bios), os and connection.

But you'll save yourself some work if you get a video card with a native HDMI port to connect to another HDMI port on the tv you want to use. Also keep in mind if you use the mobo's onboard sound, vs a dedicated soundcard with regards to the audio pass through of the HDMI video card.

I have my GTX 285's hooked up to a LG 42" 1080P and its a love hate realtionship. When you have it hooked up through the HDMI to DVI style cable it always overscales and any driver past 182's dont let you rescale in control panel PITA! As soon as you install the latest driver it loses the ability to resize the desktop so your screwed when wanting to update for game compatibility . Only solution I have found is to just deal with running the VGA cable on back of HDTV, it has a slight loss of contrast but you still get 1080P resolution with it. When setup on VGA cable it scales correctly and TV is able to display a very beautifull crisp picture so I have been using it since. I tried everysingle driver revision on 3 different 285's and still cant get any use out of my $40 DVI to HDMI cable cause of F"IN nvidia removing the resize option after 182's  Find a TV with DVI input if possible that way you can get Digital signal with out all the overcan bullshit or stuck in VGA input like my setup. Once setup I will never go back to PC 30" or under after gaming on this.

ATi cards like to underscan at 1080p in DX10 games. I have tried everything to get it stop and I can't, other than that it's been great.

Glad I heard about this from you. I used to have to adjust that on my pc with the 280 in it to get it to look right on a 60 inch sxrd with a 50 ft. Hdmi cable.

Guess that cable was a waste now.

Not sure if its isolated to just me, but ever since I put Windows 7 on my machine I've been unable to do HDMI to my 47" Westingouse. The screen continuously resets every 5 seconds or so. This was never an issue on XP :( (GTX260)

Using the rig in my sig i have no issues using a 285 gtx and 9400 onboard for my gaming and/or blu-ray playback.

i think nvidias drivers have come a long way and have been working awesome for me since the 186.18 version.

just from my experience on avsforum it seems ATI has more issues with tv connectivity and resolution/gamma adjustments due to lack of driver refinement. i cant imagine there being many more issues with HDMI connectivity within the next 6-12 months while both companies iron out the little issues.

i have a 42" 1080p philips LCD and i can either run through my receiver via hdmi or go directly into the tv via dvi->hdmi and both work flawlessly.

for everyone with overscan issues make sure your tv settings arent affecting the overscan.
luckily my tv has a "PC" specified input so everything is sent to the tv unscaled and unprocessed and it fits my screen perfectly.

all I have ever done is use my TV's VGA connector, TV reports back native resolution and video card hadles it automatically.

using DVI to HDMI does not allow me to use any of my TV's native resolution (1366*768) simply because that is not a valid HD signal format.

I had a few issues with DX10 with the signal being converted to 1080i but with dx10.1 all the games that had the problem (stalker, forgot rest) they work fine in 1080p.

both have had their issues but I think (and I mean think as I know ATI has had some issues as well) that ATI is a little better at this. Nvidia has had some scaling issues with monitor and TV and has a bad habit of blaming their bugs on improper EDID despite their competitors working fine. ATI at least calls them bugs. There are almost always something you can do to fix it (in my case I have a registry hack I have to apply every time I upgrade my Nvidia drivers, pain in the ass)

My HTPC has a HD4350 in it. My particular card didn't have the HDMI port, but did have HDMI through the ATI adapter. Video and audio worked great on it through the adapter with my HDTV (32" 720P Westinghouse). Ran Catalyst 9.2, 9.4, and 9.6 on Vista32. Worked flawlessly plug and play through HDMI, didn't even have to adjust any settings (no overscan etc.). The drivers even automatically set the video to TV's native res (1360x768). Don't know why it chose 1360 over 1366, but it works so I don't complain. The only hiccup I've run into was re-installing Vista while plugged into the HDTV. Vista install would fail unless I plugged the machine into a normal monitor instead. The Vista disc I was using was PRE-SP1, so that might have had something to do with it.

Windows 7 RC1 install went flawlessly so far with machine plugged into HDMI during install. Catalyst 9.7 just works also zero problems.

My HTPC doesn't play too many games though...mostly GRID, Street Fighter 4, and emulators. It doesn't under/overscan at all in those games.
